Gussie,

Mine does exactly the same thing and has for the last 1500 miles. It sounds like a mild diesel clatter when it's under no-load, steady throttle at in-town speeds. I did and redid the primary and finally added an octane boost. That took care of about 50% of the noise. It had been a long time since I'd ridden an air-cooled bike, esp an American made bike. I took a ride on a friend's Blast and his made the same sound.
See if you can get a ride on someone else's to compare it to yours. Once I did that I stopped caring about the strange sounds mine made...

My engine makes the same sort of clatter noise under light load slight throttle...I swear it sounds like the carb slide is rattling...maybe thats just a flashback from the old days of running flat slide kehins..they rattled like crazy just off idle..

In any case...mine rattles...it is a Buell noise...forget about it...if an oily part exits into the sunshine, I will know what it was...

Awf_Hand: Sounds like you're detonating. Check your timing. Set it back just a tiny bit and see if it makes the sound go away. Check your TPS, too. The way you do that is to disconnect it, measure resistance, slowly twist the throttle, and see your meter change smoothly. I think it's something like 3 or 4 K ohms.

Ok, guys, some REAL science about why Black is the fastest color. Since the color is embedded in the plastic, then the surface is identical from one color to the next. Therefore, with wind resistance ruled out, the only thing left is light resistance.

Yellow plastic will absorb light in the blue portion of the spectrum, while reflecting light in the red and green area of the spectrum. When you reflect something, you're applying twice as much force are you are when you are absorbing something. Therefore, black is the fastest color, since it absorbs all light and reflects only the shininess of the plastic itself. One could conclude that white is the slowest color. One could also conclude that an older, dingy, or unshiny, Blast would be faster than a new shiny Blast.

Any questions? going for a refill on my rum now...}

So Reuel,

You're saying black is a sponge for visible and invisible radiation.

I've never seen a fast sponge.

PS.

AS for my detonation issues...

There is now a gas station near my place that sells 93 octane. I'm good with that.

Yes - Mo's rocks! The Chowder place wasn't bad the night before, but Mo's is in a different league with great prices to boot!
You like how long it keeps winning BBQ competitions;0) - SLO is a nice hub to live in to go do things.

Dirt would increase wind resistance, negating the lowered photo resistance. Sponges live in the bottom of the ocean, and water provides too much resistance to motion, so that's why you've never seen a fast sponge.

Hey guys. I've been in the primary. Everything good and tight. Shoe good. hate to bug you guys but how do I back off the timing a little? Have manual. Burning 93, god knows where the fuel is coming from. May go get some Sunoco (sp). Can anything be loose in old stock exhaust that has sat for a long time? Rusted maybe. Going for ride. Caution to the wind

In the knowledge vault under ignition there is a doc on how to static time the blast. I think to back it off It needs to be turned counter clockwise. I would think there could be something in the stock exhaust that could rattle, my bike came with a V&H.

Funny, I've been craving BBQ as well. Rather than go out, Chris and I are going to smoke a couple racks of spare ribs. We figured while we were at it, we might as well pull out the ice cream maker.

Caught my eye as a tire that could handle light dirt as well. The front is 110/80-16 - 20 over is the max ratio - I just don't think it would fit well, however, you could probably get away with using the Pirelli Diablo front at 110/70-16 which is groovier than the rear tread wise - lol

the 120/70-16 rear is 96mm high the 140/80-16 is 98mm high

100/80-16 is 80mm high
110/80-16 is 88mm high

So you only gain 8m in front in 2 mm in back. With 6mm in hight difference and maybe only .5deg decrease in head angle.

unfortunately the data sheets would not come up so i couldn't compare the specs to see the actual differences. I am guessing that since our rear rim is on the narrower side of the size range (pinching the tire taller) the real hight difference between ft/rear will be less.
I don't know if it would clear the front fender though.

I have been noticing a leak around the seal of the cover of my airbox, especially when i give it a lot of throttle while riding or i am on the highway for long periods of time. It smells like fuel and i was wondering what causes this and what would get rid of this or help to alleviate the situation.

On mine it appears to be excess oil blown through the PCV system and unable to make it's way into the combustion chamber. The airbox is wet inside and the oil has leaked past the seam and begun to blow it's way onto the back of the bike. It's not a major leak, but a tablespoon of oil sprayed into a mist can cover a lot of stuff.

What I've tried:
Pulling and inspecting the PCV for proper function -it works, but will represent my next parts order if no-one else has a suggestion.
Zip-tieing the lines for the PCV inside the airbox, as I believed they could have been wicking and leaking past the hose barbs. (I did not opt for hose clamps.)
I'd gotten advice to check the oil level to make sure it was not too high, thusly encouraging blowby. Oil was fine, and thankfully I got to use the word "thusly".
The only advice that I didn't attempt/follow was to reroute the PCV to vent outside the airbox, as I didn't feel this addressed the real issue.

As previously mentioned, the PCV valve is the next target of opportunity, and I will be flushing and cleaning all the hoses that are part of that system.

Low RPMS don't seem to be a bother. It's interstate running at 70mph that brings out the seepage in a small triangular wind-blown patch on the lower rear quadrant of the airbox cover.

Does that about sum it up Thumper??

On the tire sizes - 20% is the limit to the safe ratio to go over-sized, however, I still think the front is a tad big. I was just wondering for the guys that do light off roading if this would be a good tire, also supposedly this tire has great mileage. Being a touring tire - its probably not that sticky.

Exactly! I hadn't gone into as deep of exploration as you, however, i am glad you addressed the issues above. The lower rear corner has the most leakage, however, the upper front corner seems to show signs of seepage when in the range of 85-90 sustained for at least 3 min.

Just a quick question about exhaust and jetting. My roomie just picked up a new V&H, but is still waiting on one of his jets. Is he safe installing the exhaust without the rejet for a little bit, or should he rejet right away? Also, should he adjust mixture screw with exhaust before or after jetting? Complete stock bike by the way.

Subvert - for a little while - he'll be fine, adust screw to stop popcorn.

Latest bad info from the Ralph group - sigh -
"Pirelli ST66 rear tire

Well Jill, I haven't tried out the ST66 myself, so I cannot say for sure. BTW, I
still have my Avon Roadrider mounted, and it's a high quality motorcycle
tire(Not Scooter tire), although I find the tire to be a tad skittish when cold.
As for front tires- I'm always Adamant about NOT using ANY tire in size
110/70-16, so DO NOT MATCH IT UP with anything in THAt size. But you'll be safe
mixing it with any 100/80-16, or better yet- any 100/90-16 front tire."

The man has obviously never tried the tire, has not felt how much better the bike handles with the tire, yet still responds to the question as if he had - sigh -

Ah well - a lot of Blast riders actually know better, and maybe he'll actually try it some day.
