I want to thank Ryan again for showing me that Stinson Beach loop! Breath taking cliffs on all sides with ocean views! Beautiful sunny day - about 60 deg. - the perfect way to work the last of a bad cold out of your system! - lol - The Holidays are over - yeah! - Looking forward to the year and the rides it will bring! Check this out - http://www.twistgear.net/page%20html/sportgear.html A close-ratio fifth gear for sportster/buell 5-speeds that will fit the Blast! Its priced at about $600. If you are looking for better top speed or lower-rpm cruising this would be a great alternative to a six speed. --Nik |

From what I read it's not a close ratio just a taller 5th gear (direct drive). It also said Buell tube frame only with trap door tranny. On the other hand (from what I read) the 2004 Buell brochure lists different primary drive ratios for the Blast, XB9 & XB12. So it may be possible to swap primary drive parts with the XB12 and get a higher top speed!? My preference would be just to change out the 1st gear for a taller one-with the ratio being closer to 2nd gear. Erik |

Ok, maybe I should have shown this one:http://www.twistgear.net/PDF/SportGear%20tech%20sheet.pdf (It is a PDF, so you need adobe acrobat reader to view it.) Sorry for the confusion, I think the first link is a little old, so maybe they just hadn't tested it on a Blast. Also, Johnson Engineering put a lot more technology into the kit than just making the fifth gear taller. I hope this PDF helps to clear things up. --Nik |

Okay, I knew I was missing something, though sadly it means if you don't change belt pulley sizes to a taller gearing (not a Blast option yet) you don't get any added top speed. The conversion relies on the fact you can get the international rear pulleys for a Sportster,29/55 as opposed to 29/61(USA) for the increased top speed. The conversion lowers the internal trans ratios (1-4) back closer to stock, to retain the 'off the line' performance, but makes the gap between 4th & 5th greater, to retain the added top speed. However, if you change the primary gearing to the XB12 gearing 1:5 (Blast is 1:6), you could use their gears to your advantage. Thanks for the link. It adds another option to the mix. GearheadErikO |

- You know though - pully/gear customization has been done - pricey - but been done - keeping the belt drive;0) - read about it in a Battle Twin on several Blasts - lol - only one guy did it totally right he was a Machinest and did some heavy duty billit jobs only a tad lighter than stock but stronger...totally custom - saw his Blast for sale on Ebay not too long ago. Stay Tuned! - lol - Sunday I'll be reporting on a ride and an idea, others I know are deep in the midst of their winter projects and Cali folk like myself valiantly struggle to get in as much ridding as we can in the harsh Cali winters - lol - as for projects the Black will be getting a different tail section in about 6 mo., and the Thumper section itself will become more in depth in several different sections - the quick section and KV - I would not jump the gun - have been busy just preparing for a small 'local' meet - really will explain more sunday when plans are more solid - sorry for false mystery - just gathering data still - lol Got Thump?! New Blast Sales have plummeted due to a current glut - everybody trading up! However, from what I can tell from other Boards the Blast is still a top choice for the new rider, and there is a long term core ownership(almost a third). Me I kind of like the bike and so probably stick with it for a good while longer - at least as daily transportation. Still - The look is getting dated and it would be great if Buell took that step forward and continued to build on the idea with an updated version - what would you guys like to see? - I'd like FI, a tach., a much lighter and more efficient exhaust and intake - a lighter bike overall and a general upgrade on suspension pieces so when approaching a good turn on a track day doesn't make the rear dance around. The improvement in the head overall would be nice so that a broader section of cams could be bolted in. Style - I dunno - something light and sleek, with curves where the KTM has angles - lol - like I said! This board is one big inhale waiting for the Buell shoe to finally drop! I know there are a ton of new Blasters out there - albiet with used Blasts - this board should be busier than ever, yet because we are one current model strong we still lack depth. For example - surely someone has dyno'd a Blast with all the pro series stuff on and the Screaming eagle ignition taking you to 6800 - what are the torque/HP numbers, theres folks running 600cc - what are your numbers, how does it feel? Anyone slap a turbo on yet? Almost 5 yrs soon enough - and this bikes potential is still untaped - anyone put an aftermarket or custom FI on yet - FI not that new - Del Orto came out with FI dual stack for VWs in the 90's and people started adapting those to everything - no one has tried this? Penski will do a Blast shock - anyone have one? Anyone have USD forks - how are they? Is the adjustability difficult to do? - so much is out there and my project book is full - restore a 2000, make a hardtail, S1 tale for Vader, Rearsets and clipons for Maul, and plenty of study and rereading - lol - still alot of folks this time of year are deep into their projects - makes ya wonder - lol Got Thump?! I'm hoping to get a Blast by this coming Spring. It wouldn't bother me if they updated the design just a bit. I have a Sporty of my own, and would love a smaller bike just to "Blast" around on and carve some corners. They need spend some money marketing these things, though. Until a year ago I hadn't even heard of Buell (though I wasn't actively involved in bikes until just recently after about a 15 year break). |

If you like your Sporty, you'll love the Blast.Do you know that feeling when you get off a friends Big Twin and get on your Sportster? Feels like your on a Schwinn with a motor! Get off your Sportster and onto the Blast, it feels the same way! The Blast can be addictive that way! PS Been to Bowling Green? (read your profile-nice old Sportsters) |

The Blast looks like it was styled after the Cyclone. It should get updated to look like the XBs a little. I've toyed around with pictures trying to draw a silver "frame" on it, but could never get it to work out. I probably would have had better luck mocking something up with aluminum foil. LOL I'd like to see the Blast with a 600-750cc V-twin. A tach would be nice, and maybe a fuel-injection *option*, 'cause having a carb makes the bikes a Tinkerer's dream. More popular tire sizes would be nice. That way we could have heated debates about more than just oil!

Nope, never been to BG but have plans to make the trip this year. I know what you mean about getting onto the smaller bikes. I love engines, especially thumpers. I'm not a Jap bike fan, but my kid's Honda 50 and 70's just get me all giddy like a kid again. They remind me of the old Harley Sprints, only much much smaller. ...something about a Thumper. edited by alleydude on January 22, 2004 |

Yea it looks cool! - That said I really don't think that frame is strong enough to do the job properly - a Cafe bike is suposed to be able to handle and that frame looks like it would bend on the first serious set of turns - lol - maybe that frame is made of some super material to prevent flex, I highly doupt it though. Take a look at a serious independent effort by a real expert - the Kosman Vortex A nice setup and if you were to put in a stage 3 Merc motor and 6 speed - you'd be eating Busa's as a matter of course - very pricey fun! But its nice to know that a big twin can be put to more usage than just hauling a very heavy cruiser down the road - lol Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! I agree with EZ. Something light and curvy. maybe something more like this: But be aware that entry level motorcycles from any manufacturer are seldom updated. Just look at the Suzuki GS500E. That bike went at least 10 years with only minor appearance changes. Jon Z |

EZ this a quick response to your post on the 21st. I wish I could do half the mods on the bike I wanted to do and do a dyno run. I guess it all comes down to cash and not having any for the bike at least. Let me ask you this, is the blast in stock form able to take 6800 rpm on a consistent basis ? Or if this is done can I count on the engine going south real fast. I would love to put an extra 300 rpm on the top half of the bike and it is a mod that does not seem to hard to do. Thanks |

Consistently would be the key word - if your always hitting the revlimmiter now - don't bother - you'll just blow the motor - however, floating valves happens just north of that number so your good to that point, and taking the motor to the edge isn't bad as long as you don't hang there - I hit the limmiter once and a while and thats fine, but if I was constantly nudging it - on a stock head I wouldn't raise it - so I guess it would come down to riding styles as to weither it would be safe - lol - cause 6800 is the edge for a stocker and it would be just like standing at the very edge of a cliff - you see what I'm saying;0) By the way - that bike with the Japanese back round is just ugly - maybe its a bad pic but the finish makes me shudder - lol Got Thump?! OK all, strange question..... Anybody have a stock "boat anchor" exhaust running around that they would like to part with reasonably? It appears that I will be working a different shift before summer, and although I like my kerker exhaust's power, I also like my neighbors And waking them up before dawn is not something I really want to do. Gonen-have you checked out the section on exhaust? There is much information there. Re-jetting is usually required but not always a must do.(or must do right away).2nd question would be- What are your priorities? Max performance, looks, sound ,price, durability? (PS don't get a White Brothers). |

The D&D is a great middle of the road choice - fit and finish is excellent and no reported problems so far, also a lot easier to maintain, I myself monday plan to talk to them about a larger header option, but I've heard nothing but good about their regular Blast system and they have a post of their results that put them above the V&H in performance improvement. I'd shim the needle a tad - 01 - jet according to instructions in the carb section - the pilot should at least be upped to 45 and the 170 main - after that dyno and jet accordingly - some go up to 175 and some don't.
