Since it was 5 degrees out this morning and I couldn't ride the bicycle to work, I thought I'd introduce myself. This is something I've not done here, and I'll fake-skate back outside once I've thrown my poo against the wall for y'all to see. Maybe you've seen my posts before; I'm the strangely dressed guy down at the end of the bar who's sipping the Nut Brown Ale.

As I sit here at my desk ruminating and fumigating, (I just cropdusted some mid-processed white bean chili vapors around the office) I'm coming to think about the things that I like and why I like them.

I've tried to tailor myself to like that which others do not. I'm currently listening to ABBA, having finished the spam and monterey jack cheese sandwich that I had for my lunch. I wear funny hats; genuinely and figuratively. I go to the fair in the moring -midweek. I shop the thrift stores for most of my wares/wears. I started snowboarding in 1986 (yes, they had it then, but no-one had heard of it) and on one trip to Snow King, Jackson, WY, I wore an obnoxious grass-green coat. I took lots of guff about my coat, but, amidst the neons of the time, there was no losing sight of where "I" was. By the end of the day, members of my group only found each other by finding me. Of course, "earth tones" came back a few years later, so I opted for Aztec-patterned sky tones. Snowboarding then got too popular and I started Schuetzen (traditional German/Swiss rifle shooting) competition instead
My helmet is solid white. I've added a "beltline" of reflective tape around the bottom rim. My boots are "backroom" Mason Wellingtons that I bought as rejects over 20 years ago. I have a Geo Prizm. You might remember those; they were GM's that sneaked out with a little "earth" emblem on and had pitiful resale value. They are actually a Toyota Corolla and once the resale market "discovered" that, my car became worth more than I paid for it... -a rarity in my world.

I guess I'm realizing that I intentionally buck trends just so I can be in the shortest line, or simply get what I want because most people "don't want that". While my 4 pack of French military work shirts has gotten low, (worn/torn) I found a great supply of mid-length, faded-grey labcoats to replace them for working in the field as a land surveyor. (Do you know a lot of land surveyors? Didn't think so.) I look forward to having some larger pockets for my "junk". I've been referred to as "Geek Chic" and while I have no use for comic books, and have perfect vision -i.e. not requiring horn-rimmed glasses, I do own every single season of Stargate SG-1 and every single Trek -all series, all seasons. I know who invented the Warp Drive, and usually score about 90% on any Sci-fi quizzes. I won't ever go to a convention though; what a bunch of losers. My favorite author is Ray Bradbury and I can find any of his books at Half-Price bookstores, or online. I guess, by nature of my selections, I've created a pretty effective anti-theft environment as well.

I've been to the Spam Museum in Austin, MN and the Mustard Museum in Mt. Horeb. Loved them both, and have 7 varieties of mustard in my fridge and 5 varieties of Spam in my cupboard.
I've toured factories where they make sinks and toilets.
I thought seeing the air rifle that went with Lewis and Clarke was awesome.
The wife and I use cloth diapers.
I researched procreation and methods for ensuring that the wife and I would have girls. -We had two girls, two years and one day apart ('05 & '07), as we'd marked the calendar for each "cycle". =That one's more fun to ride than the Blast! }
I cast my own bullets (and form my own brass for the 32 Miller Short -figger that one out)
I ordered a custom single-shot pistol in 32-40 Winchester.
I've been to Three-Mile Island (1988, so, yes, after the incident)
I can and have used "whom" properly in conversation.
I make custom ball-point pens from deer antler on my lathe.
I seriously considered purchasing a Royal Enfield Electra (military model), but I do still have to share freeways with the rest of "the normals" and didn't consider it viable. -I'd picked out my hat, goggles, and riding jacket from the Brit military surplus bin, but alas, 'twasn't to be. -Someday...

When I bought my Blast, almost everybody I talked to (in person) told me I would hate it and that I would outgrow it almost immediately. They were an unusual style that wasn't able to be classified. They were this, they were that... I still seem to be a focal point for congregation, however. -What's Dean going to do next?! Let's hang out with him and see. A friend who has had no interest in "American" bikes is shopping for a Buell for himself and his wife.

I've now accepted that I love single-cylinder motorcycles. I've asked for a membership/subscription to the FSSNOC (google it) and will eagerly await each publication. I've enjoyed the exclusivity of my choices throughout my life and likely will continue "making footprints" for the rest to follow. If the Blast had a larger fuel tank, I'd ride it to Alaska. I wonder if I could fit a KLR tank to a Suzuki Savage... I digress.

Now that you've had a brief tour of the unusual pink goo that is my brain, who ARE you and why were you all drawn to the Blast???

How can one top that for uniqueness?? I would think that you were born to "Buell"..

Me...I was born a poor white child...yes the old homestead looked remarkably like the one Steve Martin's character lived in. As they say in the south...you could throw a cat through the wall...I too have what I would call a unique appearance..and attitude..I'm fond of camo and I love the smell of nitro in the morning..a dyed in the wool adrenaline junkie at the age of 54...I drive a Jeep Comanche pickup that is as at home grille deep in mud as it is on the highway...I have set two national records (now retired)...both on thumpers...I have built countless bikes and engines of all description...for my self, but mostly for others...I went to work at the local Honda shop the day after I graduated from high school...I wore a crew cut as a child, waist lenght hair as a young adult...now I buff my beautiful scalp as an old man...all my footwear are steel toed or flip flops...I don't own a suit, I won't wear a tie...I will bow to no man, but will share my last piece of bread...I used to fight because I could and now I don't because I have learned that the real winner does not..I love to share my knowledge, but will not waste my breath on those who won't listen...I am working hard at earning my rightful position as a cantankerous old fart...and I am making great strides in that area...and I ride a Buell because it is DIFFERENT!!!

Hi, Awf_hand. My mom just retired from Hormel in Austin where she was the Spam Museum Head Archivist. Believe it, or not!

Thanks Awf-hand, I think I learned more about me, when reading about you! You a writer too?

Seriously, we need a better place for this 'introduction' stuff. Its too good to be lost in the archives. Anybody got an idea for a thread title and/or where it should go?

I'm with Rob on this one.

Awf_hand! We could hang! I was raised to be different! Once there's a BLASTARDS ARE WE section, I'll go ahead and post my slightly deranged self description.

Very good description, for a weirdo. You may have fouled up now though; you might fit right in.
I don't use cloth diapers. I think they might wad up on the Blast seat and injure the parts I use to research procreation. I have had a few moments I came very close to needing them though.

I DO like Spam.

Some good points raised.

Fast1075. I hear you. I don't bother buffing my scalp as I'd prefer it not shine. I'm working on a McGyver-mullet, but I doubt I'll get there anytime soon.

I do own a suit. I will bow to those I've determined worthy, and will thank them when they return bows that I've earned. I'm too young to be a cantankerous old fart, so I guess I'm just grouchy.

Also, I'm not lactose intolerant; I just don't put up with any of milk's sh!t.

Erik; Am I a writer? Only when I write.

Point of clarification: The wife and I use the cloth diapers on our offspring. The eldest of the siblings no longer has a need for them, opting instead to "drop ploppers". There's an element of pride that comes from a certain 3.7 yr old when she calls me in to check out the nugget she'd be offering the wet-white buddha.
I try to wear bicycle shorts under my riding gear on longer trips. If you haven't tried this, TRY IT. You'll not regret it.

wbsprudels, you just became cool by association. It's a precarious sort of cool, which is tied firmly to your mom. -Quick, say something else cool, not mom-related. I promise I won't call you Stiffler. Spam rocks. Although, I have some J. McIlhenny Tabasco Spam that tastes a bit like spicy detergent. The cat liked it though. I sure do miss her.

In a side note:
I started the Buell yesterday. I'd added a bunch of Seafoam and wanted to get it circulated throughout the fuel system. I'm still impressed by how well the thing spins over. Is this the same starter that they use on the 1200 sportster? If it is, tell me. If it is not, lie to me and say it is. I'd prefer to be like Wile E. Coyote and just hang in the air off the end of the cliff for awhile.

Later,

Awf

Okay, my turn. My wife of 18 years says I am here because of a mid-life crisis. As of 3 months ago and at the age of 42, I had never owned a motorcycle, never wanted a motorcycle, and never even thought about motorcycles. And then with gas at $4/gl, I started thinking about motorcycles. My personality can be a little obsessive. I thought riding a motorcycle might be enough to scratch my itch and so enrolled in a Riders Edge course. Despite flying over the handlebars (and bloodying my shin on the brake fluid reservoir) in my first attempt at quick stopping, I wanted more riding than the two days I received in the course. I liked my Blast and decided it would be my first bike. I have put over 1700 miles in 6 weeks and am having the time of my life. I am thrilled my wife is more than understanding and supportive of my new hobby--she even likes riding with me.

Thanks Erik,

I say I'm thrilled by how well it spins over because it was about 10 degrees in my garage when I decided I should start the bike. With a frame full of 20W-50, it surprised me that the engine spun over the way it did.

wbsprudels, that was good enough. I sha'n't call you Stifler. My mind has assigned you some probationary coolness.

I recommend the book "Ride Hard, Ride Smart" by Patrick Hahn. I'd ridden bikes (and made many mistakes I'd blamed on cagers) for almost 20 years before I read this and changed my mindset for negotiating the paved world. This book will make you analyze every move you make around and every signal you give to other motorists. I read it and realized that... well you'll find out.

Thumpers deliver power in a different way than any other engine. My last bike was a thumper and my next one will likely be. While my little brother (technophile) is downloading FI maps and "chipping" his conveyances, I'm enjoying the simplicity of my ride. I deal with software and firmware all day in my field and office equipment, and as such I need a mental vacation. The Blast provides that.

-Currently lil-bro's "synchronizing carburetors" on a Bandit 1200s. He's having difficulty. I told him that my carburetor just needs to be synchronized with an intake valve, and that this is a dynamic and auto-adjusting operation occurring with every other engine revolution. He's a mechanical eng. and, as such, was not amused with my personal anecdote -or maybe he secretly was... I'm still thinking about what to offer him when he starts "adjusting valves". What a ridiculous thing to do on a non-race engine!

-My wife's grandfather was a machinist in the 1940's when a man approached him with a proposal and a project. He'd developed a gizmo that would fill with engine oil which once pressurized by an oil pump would then act as a solid. They were going to revolutionize the auto engine. He needed several hundred units, -quickly- as well as investors. Unfortunately, grandpa couldn't meet the requested demand for producing this item and had to decline investing in this man's invention. If he'd known then what he knows now, he says, he'd have mortgaged his business to produce the very first automotive hydraulic valve lifters.

Hello, my name is Bryan and I ride a Blast. My riding friends call me Rainman because every time I get on a bike with any of them, the rain falls in torrents.

I, too, am not quite right, according to my friends. I was pro-war in the 1960s
(junior high) and wore short hair, my dad's Korean-era Army jacket, peg-leg jeans and cowboy boots during the bells and long-hair era.

I worked my way through college, living in the slums rather than dorms. For 30 years I have been a newspaper reporter/columnist, but I am considered an oddity at the office.
I voted for John McCain and most of my colleagues did not. I voted for Bush in 2004, most of my colleagues did not. I voted for Ralph Nader before that and John Hagelin before that, Clinton, Bush I, Mondale, Anderson and Ford.

I own guns and like to shoot, mostly at targets. I am pro-choice and pro-gun and anti-government and anti-religious-right- moral-code-enforcers. I fly the Bonnie Blue flag not as a paean to the Confederacy but as celebration of independent thought and action.

I'm a Michigan-born Yankee living in the South.

I studied Swedish in college.

Where most reporters no longer wear ties, I have in my closet a six-month supply of garage-sale ties so that I may wear one tie only twice a year. They look good with my TJ Maxx dress shirts, Dickies jeans and motorcycle boots.

I am the only reporter in the office in the past 30 years who has a Bible on his desk. I may be the only one who has read it. I know I'm the only one who has studied Taoism as a religion and philosophy, meditates and performs bizarre Chinese purification rituals and teaches tai chi to old folks and in the county school system.

Since 1988 I have commuted to work on a motorcycle, showing up at car wrecks, bomb threats, murder scenes or at peace rallies on two wheels. I ride all year long and have recently become increasingly ATGATT.

I bought a Blast because I needed a bike. Before the B, I rode a 1989 1200 Sportster for 15 years, customized and souped-up with highly frabulizated Knuten valves and titanium sneezepins. I later acquired a 1972 CB 350 and 1982 GL 1100 A.

I sold the XLH and CB to buy a house at the bubble's beginning. A few years ago, several chipmunks invaded my 1982 Honda Goldwing Aspencade and ate up the wiring harness.

I am a mechanical 'tard and could not fix it, so I gave it to the man I bought it from 15 years ago (I ride bikes a long, long time). He gave me $2,000 for it. Nice guy. Good friend.

I went without a bike for a year, in clear violation of MSF policy, and took the Rider's Edge instructor training program. I rode the Blast and was underwhelmed, although I loved the Firebolt. However, my dealer was dumping some used RE bikes and it fit my paltry budget so I bought.

I promised Thumper as I threw my leg over it, that there would be no more students and prepared to take the dog of a bike on a freeway trip over a serious mountain pass in heavy traffic.

I had to pull off the road into a scenic overlook after cresting the mountain because I was doing 80 mph passing semis up the hill and was laughing too hard.

I have learned to love the thing -- stock as it is -- and even work on it with help from Gearhead, Swampy and E-Z.

I have caught much crap from fellow riders who knew my Old Wing for going from a "real bike" to a beginner bike. I tell them I had to get a smaller bike to make up for other things that were just TOO large.

I love good whiskey and good sex, preferably having both with my wife.

I still lust after a Lightning, or maybe a Cross Bones, but the Blast is all I really need. I love tossing it around town, going up on the sidewalks, taking the bicycle lane and getting 60 mpg. I want to take the P-3 to the track (P-3R) and on a 700-mile ride to Michigan (P-3T)to see Swampy and my family.

I guess I ride the Blast because I can afford it, it's paid for and it does everything I ask of it and does it well.

30 horses is all I need. Any more would be showing off.

Not so much about what makes me tick, but what ticks me off.

Tonight the Little Kid had to call the Poison Control center on my behalf. The Little Kid and I were monkeying around the house working on a "Project" I had been trying to drink plenty of water as I have been feeling a little under the weather for the last week, I'm in Michigan, at the start of the long Siberian winter and I have not seen the sun for a little over two weeks.

The Little Kid had thoroughly pissed off his mother because she wouldn't let him watch Family Guy on TV. She was gone, she took off in the car, she didn't say where. The Little Kid and I were alone, undisturbed, happily working away. I was looking around the kitchen for my glass of water and apparently couldn't find the one I had before as I picked up a large glass sitting on the counter and took a big swallow.....it didn't taste quite right, I took another swig and swallowed, it still didn't taste right, it had a funny after taste. I dumped what little was left of the glass in the sink and refilled the glass with clean tap water, water drawn from less than 30 feet under my driveway.

I used to change the oil on the old mans car that lived at the top of the hill, he always used to ask me if I wanted to dump the used oil on my driveway to help keep it packed down. He would say "Robert! you oughta put that oil on your driveway, It makes it pack down real nice after a little while" Sure it did, but he didn't have a well under his driveway.

As the Little Kid and I were working through our project, I started getting queasy, a little nauseous, not thinking anything is wrong, its the day after Thanksgiving Day and those sick relatives of my wifes were up from Indiana. But man, my stomach was really feeling bad, and I almost never puke.

After a while and drinking so much water I had to go take a leak, so off to the bathroom I go. As I'm doing my thing I survey the bathroom. I have an old white medical cabinet that I use for towels and toilet paper, soap and things like that. It has a glass front on it so guests can look in and see what I have. I see a hydrogen peroxide bottle laying on its side....I pick it up....its empty. I throw it in the garbage.....then it hits me, the funny aftertaste....I drank Hydrogen Peroxide! The Little Kid looked up the number and gave the poison control center a call. They told him have me drink milk, I hate milk! They said as long as I don't puke I will be alright.

I'm thinking out loud to the Little Kid, WHY IN THE F@CK would your mother leave a glass of hydrogen peroxide on the kitchen counter? The bitch is trying to poison me! Why in the hell would she want to kill me?

I then remembered the worst part of it, earlier this afternoon the wife was trying to rid the dog of his horrible "Dog Breath" and was using the hydrogen peroxide in the glass to rinse the tooth brush out with.

I am the man with the cast iron stomach.

Good one! Glad you didn't die.

I'm Reuel and I ride a Blast! I wasn't always that way. In fact, I started out as a hard-core geek. I was the one who was picked on by people in a lower grade. I was the one who girls teased each other about, saying, "there's your boyfriend." I was the one who knew all the intricacies of programming computers before most people even knew computers could fit on a desk. See Radio Shack TRS-80 for details.

Despite this, I ended up hanging out with regulat people. I think it was because I was the youngest of almost a dozen kids, 5 of us having the same parents, 4 from a different dad, and 2 from a different mom. We didn't have money, so we all learned how ti fix things. I started sometime around 7 or 8, taking things apart and putting them back together, successfully. Because we had cars, I learned how to work on them, too. That's how I ended up with friends who work on cars as well as friends who got full scholarships to MIT.

What did I do? I joined the Navy. It was then that I found out I walked funny. I was the brunt of jokes such as, "do you have a corn cobb up your butt?" I checked my posture, and now I walk straight. My back feels better, too. Because of numerous ankle sprains and not wanting to use crutches, I became very good at limping. So good that I still do it even though I'm healed.

One day, in 2001, I talked my wife into visiting the local HD store. We do it once or twice a year so I can ogle shiny big things. The one that caught my eye that day was purple and $17,000. I asked if they had anything in my wife's size. She's 4'11" 95# wet. They pointed at my Blast that she let me get for Valentine's Day. That's when things really started to change.

One day, I received a payoff for someone running me off the road. That's when I put it all together. I program computers, I play with electronics, and I ride a Blast. So, I designed an aftermarket ignition and am currently tweaking software to get it to run well. I've designed other electronic things for my Blast as well. I just recently got a real job, and will be moving a couple hundred miles away. Once I'm situated, I'll start work on my EFI project.

I like Spam. My mom tells me it was her junk food when she was growing up during WWII.

I never introduced myself on here either.

Name's Rob, current college student at SFSU in San Francisco. I want BA, and never knew how tough the courses could get. Biggest mistake I made so far is taking all the tough courses in one semester...never again...

I took a riding course last year just for the heck of it. I really wanted the license and got it soon after.

Parking was almost impossible at SFSU, so I had to park at the garage that charges $1/hr or $5/ day. Motorcycles, though, had free parking in the garage, along some streets, and a nickel/hr at other places...hmmm....

So I researched on small bikes I could look into, something I could take on the highway. I kept finding all these beat-up and overpriced 250cc Ninja's, and that's when I ran into a '00 Yellow Blast on Craigslist. I met up with the owner at his workplace and he let me test drive it in downtown. I told him I learned from taking the class, but I never told him I had no street experience whatsoever =P

I loved it. The bike was so simple, yet comfortable. I happily bought it and then realized....I have to drive this thing home...no street experience, The Blast was so easy to handle I rode home on the highway.

Engine needed a serious top-end rebuild, and with the help of this forum, finished it myself. Had to take it to the dealer for electrical and fuel-related issues, but now I park in front of SFSU on a street where I don't pay a dime. =)

Hi everyone,

My name is Rob as well, but since I'm in Maryland I can be the East Coast Rob.

I'm 22 and I go to BSU - Bowie State University. The school is about 90% black and I'm usually the only white person in my classes but that really doesn't bother me. I transferred in after doing a 2 year school and I'm going for my masters in the Fall. I work as a videographer and do most of my work inside my house.

I used to live in Clarksburg which was a small farming town until about 5 years ago when development moved in. After that I moved into my girlfriends place with her since her Dad is in Iraq and won't be home until April. And they just moved to Union Bridge, pop. 1,100.

OK so now about the bike. I started out getting into motorcycles in a strange way. My girlfriend's dad has a Kawasaki z1000 but I was never really interested at the time. But about 2 years ago when we had finished riding our horses he asked if I wanted to ride on the back of his bike for a little while. I loved it. But even then I didn't stand up and yell 'I want a motorcycle'. It kinda happened when we moved to Union Bridge and I saw how much land we were going to be on. My girlfriends mom suggested that instead of getting a dirt bike I could get a motorcycle and ride on the road.

And that little suggestion set me off into this crazy obsession. I ended up the Blast because anything smaller wouldn't keep up with the roads out here. I'm currently the ONLY person at my university to ride a motorcycle, which I do every time I have classes, and the commute is 1 hour and 15 minutes one way.

Since March 15th I have ridden 8734 miles.

Rock on! Commute everyday you can and people will think you're weird. That's a great reputation to have.

Today's world finds me as an accountant - Payables - for three medium sized National advertising firms - I keep busy. My hobby for the last nine years - the Buell Blast. Because of this hobby - I am registered in almost all the major Buell Forums, I am a Moderator in three, and the owner of one Yahoo Group which has been very useful to most Blast riders (for its articles and such - no posted discussions). I like this bike and have been tinkering on it for eight years now. Though I am sure my next Buell will serve me even better with no tinkering besides maintenance, the Buell Blast will always be my hobby - probably for the rest of my life.

I am constantly scolded by my loving wife by how much time I spend on the bikes - the web part is ok - I'm a fast reader - lol - and a computer is cheaper than books - which I have way too many of. However, since I have worked my hobby into our lifestyle as a pleasurable past time for both of us when doing long rides, she is much more understanding of my hobby. She is my chaser/supplies carrier/picnic holder - carrying everything from tools, a small compressor to a few good bottles of wine, and the large flask, food, etc. - all the things needed to pass a day in the woods or the beach together after a scenic ride, then the fun trip home as well. Take note guys - its a working system for keeping a non-riding wife happy - her disability keeping her from riding.

I advocate safe riding, yet many times I have found myself going past the posted - usually in the secluded twisties though. I've only slowed down in my hobby recently because I've found a new way to be poor and feel like your starting over - buy a house - though it now feels like and is home, it is a world of constant work, and financial burden, and has considerably slowed down my Blast projects. I haven't stopped though, and plan to carry out each of them, and am still looking for an empty Blast case to throw parts at - lol - email me if you have one.

I have a world of Blastards on other forums, and especially here that I need to say thank you to for contributing to me learning so much about the bike, however the list is so long that Blake would ban me for the bandwidth usage - lol - you guys are a great community, sure a majority will end up with other bikes down the road, however, the Buell Blast will leave fond memories in your wake and what you have contributed here will always be appreciated, and you fellow hard core Blastards - well - shit - we know who we are - lol - a special thank you - especially for straightening me out - ;0) -

"...my next Buell will serve me even better with no tinkering besides maintenance"

lol - yeah, right!

In point of fact, a stock Blast would serve just fine without any tinkering besides maintenance. I think tinkering is just a compulsion for some people, and such people may be drawn to the Blast.

Speaking just for myself, I'd love to have an XB and a tuber as well - either of which would almost certainly get tinkered with as soon as I got it home!

I dunno - I like the Black CR's looks - kinda like large economy sized versions of my bikes - with out all the work to get the look - I could be happy with that.

The best looking Buell - accepted as an engineering work of art by the Louvre is the White S1W - I totally agree.

Right now the Blasts are hibernating. I haven't seen the sun in a little over two weeks, the liquor cabinet is empty. So I will give you folks a few pictures to ponder while I am waiting for this facinating white stuff to go somewhere else.

The lumber wagon I drove to Cheboygan today, I had it sideways three times today, the short wheel base makes it go quick when things are just not right.

The next is what happens if you leave your car parked too long around here, I can't even drag it to the junk yard until all this pretty snow melts.

For some reason or other I came up with the Big Idea to sell this

I have already rescued Sweet Baby Jesus from the snow drift twice so far this year looks like I have to go in and dig him out again, look I'm not complaining, it's not like he hasn't done anything for me like saving my soul and providing me breath.

And all the while its snowing, again.....

All I will say is that those of you that live in places where if you get locked out of your house you could die from exposure are tuff...It gets deadly hot down here..but it seems that I can deal with that. (there is always some way to cool off).

I have only been caught in snow once...while at Philmont when I was 16 and in the Boy Scouts...we got a foot of snow while camping overnight on a mountain top in mid June...that was absolutely the worst weather experience I have ever had..it took two days to get my gear dried back out...

I always prefer the cold compared to the heat, I can always layer up and put on my heated gloves, but when it gets up to 95-100 degrees I just can't ride fast enough to make my own air conditioning
