Nik, Hang in there, It's tough, but do-able. You should be able to move some of the wires around without much problem. If I recall correctly, you don't have to remove much wiring to drop the engine. James |

Man, you guys are trying too hard. All you need is a 14mm short 1/4" or 3/8" drive ratchet and a good old 14mm combination wrench and a little patience. For the more accessible two of the three, put the socket on first, then insert the ratchet and go to it. For the bottom one you've gotta use the wrench. I've got it down to maybe 5 minutes per footpeg mount now. Still whack my knuckles now and then, though! When I come back home in April (I'm in Japan on business now) I'll be getting the Pro-Series intake and exhaust for my beloved little Thumper (the Firebolt will get some new goodies as well). Anyone figure out a good way to stiffen up the intake so it won't tear anything? Bryan |

Hey all, Thanks for the advise, I was finally able to remove them with rachet, extensions, a universal, and a universal socket after I pulled the wires to the side. There is no way I'm putting that thing back on. Time for rear-sets! --Nik

How very helpful, EZ. Very helpful, indeed. I guess Spidey and I will just have to work something up. EZ, what's your recommendation for drop-in cams for the Blast with the above-mentioned goodies? Low to mid-range increases preferable over top-end. The Blast is a hoot-scooter for around town, not a dragster. |

The only *DROP-IN* cams are the mild Andrews B50/ Pro series cams... The Buell XB9/Andrews N2 cams are better still, and *almost* drop in.... All others require better valve springs & retainers...and maybe better seats and valves too! |

Sorry Darthane, but really though my answer was cryptic it was correct! After conferring with Nallin and some local dirt track racers and my own continous experimenting have shown me that the braces are too rigid - just adding to the problem - so making sure all clamps are tight, you then add a spring to each side (auto throttle springs with the loop on one side and straight on the other works great!)mounting springs to the outer bottom rear corner of your head fin (yes you have to drill a pair of holes) and the loops of each spring are mounted to the carb (the flat side going through the holes and securing). Left mounting to carb would be the capped off vacuum line (in Cali models it is not capped - remove line, add loop, reattach line) and the right mounting point would be that piece of metal sticking up attached but seperate from the carb (have no idea of its technical name right now)which is just the right size to put the loop over. Spring tension should be mild and uniform - you should still be able to remove and replace an intake boot with them on but in doing so you should feel the steady even pressure of the springs. The XB cam would actually be the best drop in - with only a change in timing cup hole needed (as decribed in the TKV 515 big bore kit section). You'll get more from them by going to stiffer springs and better valve guides, which would then allow you to raise the RPM limit to as high as 8000 - mines set at 7100 for longevity and because when I do stroke the bike I wouldn't have to get used to a lower limit;0) - a total no work cam/bolt in is of course the B50/Pro series which is nice - I rarely go past quarter throttle with it in the city - so it gets the job done leaving you knowing you have more with just a twist;0) and adds even more confidence to highway driving! I don't do Drags! - lol Hope that helps! Got Thump?!Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

Nik, glad you got the footpegs off finally. Rearsets are the way to go! For those who continue to use the stock set-up give yourself a break and do not re-install the stock nylock nuts. Instead, use a non-locking nut and a lock washer. Then you only have to perform contorsions to start the nuts off, and can spin the rest of the way on those too-long studs by hand (by finger tip?). |

Thanks, EZ and Ralph. -=savs message URL=- I'm windering how necessary such an alteration is for the pro-Series intake. My Blast doesn't get ridden too much. Has anyone ehere who has one actually had problems with it, or is it more a potential concern? As far as the cams go, I will probably just go with the Pro-Series cam as well, then. I'm not intereested in doing too much to the Blast since it gets used pretty rarely (as fun as the little Thumper is, the XBs more so, and my g/f just doesn't ride that much). |

Any of you guys had your bikes dynoed after modifying them? What's the maximum horsepower/torque you guys have been able to get out of the Blast? Are there any kits like a Hypercharger that give it a ram-air effect? |

Only time I ever had my Blast dynoed was at Homecoming two years ago. The timing was off and it ran 30.4HP and 28ft/lbs (rejetted, otherwise bone stock). When I'm home for good I'll be taking both bikes back to the dyno, since I'll have changed things on both of them (complete Pro-Series for the Blast, new pipe and airbox for the XB). |

Over in the blast KV you can find some dyno info. My son's blast dyno'ed at 37.4 hp and 30 fp of torque. That was with nallin 515 kit, stage 3 headwork, and XB cams. HP was still headed up at 6500 rev limit. We've moved the rev limit up to 7000 but haven't been back to the dyno yet. We also have pro series intake and the V&H pipe. I would bet there is no ram air affect achievable on the blast as it can not reach the speeds necessary to produce any measurable effect. The hypercharger is more "show" than "go" IMO. |

My Blast ran about 43 HP last time tested, after Aaron took it back to "Street Mode" from it's Bonneville tune that had it slightly over 51 HP. |

I've got different numbers from different dynos (8 in all)and the number here seems to be the middle ground from my run at the Scudiera (Aprilla, Muzi,KTM dealership/racing conglom.)- lol - the ones I've come to trust are 35 FT-LB torque and 37.1 HP - The WB tuned helped alot in that number - lol - a 5 gain across the board - she's pretty maxed now, but there is always room for a stage 3 head, a 600cc kit, an XB cam and a stroker crank - lol - my only question on that will be how to keep using the stock pushrod cover - I think I'll have to fabricate a spacer and mill down the top part - but thats in the future - lol - hey I like the Black Pegasus - sue me! Dartane, I've had the pro series intake (and exhaust) on my bike for about 3500 miles now with no brace and no problems. I just make sure that the clamps are snug ever 500-1000 miles any take a look at the boot to make sure it doesn't have any cracking. James |

I would ditto what Tim said about the Hypercharger. -"I would bet there is no ram air affect achievable on the Blast as it can not reach the speeds necessary to produce any measurable effect. The hypercharger is more *show* than *go* IMO." I'd also like to state that, -unless you are an engineer- stay away from adding a Ram air intake to ANY motor. Especially a Carburated one ! What you'd gain in one RPM band- you'd lose in others! With Fuel injection and lots of sensors and tuning-you could achieve a gain. But otherwise stay away. I've been there and done that on other motors. A Note to EZ on wanting to keep his stock pushrod cover. It's very possible- unless clearance with the 600cc jug causes interferance? But I think it could be done ! BTW- Team Harley Flattrack used the stock pushrod cover for the first year they race the 500R Blast. But they used adjustable pushrods and had to cut a square hole at the bottom of the cover. And they made an aluminum door (held on with four screws?) to cover the hole. See the pics of Jens Bike that first year.

Ok, the boat anchor is gone and I've installed the Pro-series Exhaust. I also re-jetted the carb to change the 42 slow jet to a 45. However, I have a question for those that have added the pro-series air cleaner. The install diagram show a fitting coming off the elbow for the PCV vent tube to connect to. My elbow only has a dime sized hole there. Am I missing something? My kit came sealed from the dealer, so I am pretty sure they didn't take it. Granted, I am planning on rerouting the vent to a filter under the seat, and now is the time to do it. However, I was just curious how others had sealed the hole in the elbow? Thanks. Dan |

Your missing an elbow - metal - should be sticking out of that hole - all I did was put a black rubber vacuum cap over the elbows end. I'm sure the exhaust is bringing a smile to your face though and you get a free boat anchor in the trade! Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

I found a neat little cap that came with a set of air tools that I bought. It fit nearly perfectly and the texture and color matched almost exactly. I just filled the rest of a gap with silicon sealant. If you use a breather filter like you talked about, make sure you don't put it above electrical connections or components, because a sludge of water, oil and unburned fuel will come out of it from condensation and it will short things out. Thanks Ralph! I'll look into it - thank you for the pictures - very nice! You guys have snow yet? - Its great riding weather here - lol From a very reliable source - (thank you Aaron!) There's no reason that a person *has* to change the pushrod cover out for individual tubes, but it sure makes it nice if you've got adjustable pushrods. I mean, a person *can* assemble the top of the motor without that plastic cover, adjust the pushrods, disassemble the top end (the head will have to come off), put the plastic cover in, and reassemble with the pre-adjusted pushrods. It's just a lot of extra work. It's not quite as much work on an XL or tuber because those individual non-collapsible tubes they come with can be removed or replaced without removing the head, you just gotta pull the rocker boxes and the pushrods. But on a Blast or XB, you can't get that cover in or out with the head in place. - Thus the question is answered! So when I go to the 600cc - I'll pic the Black jug, keep the pushrod cover, add a stroker crank and have a hell of a sleeper! - lol GT - JBOTDS! EZ edited by ezblast on December 18, 2003 |

Actually - my goal is to swap motors;0) - the red would inherit the Blacks motor and the stock red would get yanked and benched for a complete tear down for case boring, etc. - Any Blast is a sleeper if it still looks semi stock yet has twice the power - lol You must be deep into your winter project if you already have snow - what are you planning to run in yours? - lol - Just curious;0) Got Thump?!
