I lost a quarter of my White Russian reading that - Bravo! The first time is always the hardest. Next time do it the same way, however, keep beer on stand by and while the bike is sipping, you can to - lol - do the test ride in the morn - my vent hose is open and hanging right by my oil drain hose. Thank you that was too funny! EZ |

Vlad the Oiler, thanks Rainman! Sorry to hear about your unnatural disaster, delightful read though. Thanks for the advice, the tires are a great point and the ability to work on the cycle is too. |

He's in the tuber section helping folks there. Since he blew up his Blast, he doesn't post here anymore - hubris - know it well - lol - he's still active and helpful in his own way though and seems to be in good spirits. EZ |

I rode with LaFayette last Saturday. He is doing well. He said he hopes to have his blast running again soon...it appearantly sucked a valve resulting in massive carnage. I want to do the XB primary gear and chain gimmick to mine. |

One way is to run it really lean. |

SO... I've been trying to make headway on this non starting issue. To review. The bike doesn't want to start without cranking the battery dead. Once it starts, it needs coercion for a few seconds to stay running. Then it idles real low for a few.. then picks up and runs normal. I have checked out the boot. It certainly seems good. I've ordered one.. but its taking for-ever (hawaii through a non harley source) I have learned, the bike will pop over on first revolution if I cram a rag in the intake (and of course remove it the second it pops over). Does that definitely signify a bad connector or a carb issue. Once its a tiny bit warm, it will start and idle fine. But cold It will crank the battery dead with barely a pop. I've used that method to pull gas through a car with a bad fuel pump. To vacuum the gas to the engine. Since gravity seems to be working, I don't know what else it could be. Not enough vacuum from somewhere else to suck the gas in? Or a bad carb part? |

Hard start when cold says it's lean. Could the autoenrich solenoid be stuck in the unenriching position? It's pretty rare, so I'm going to doubt it. Did you clean the metal that goes to each end of the boot and check to see if the clamps were tight? |

UPDATE: The HazMat team has left, the oil spill is cleaned up, the bugs have been removed and I've been riding the Blast up and down the back roads and on the freeway. Yes, it was well worth it. All those odd noises in the primary are gone. The silicone seal around the clutch cable seems to have stopped the leak. And I did it myself. With help, of course, from Reuel, Swampy, EZ, Gearhead and the host of Badweb Blasters. Thanks. Rock on! |

One of the valvestems either pulled apart at the keeper groove or it spit the keepers...I haven't seen it so I'm not real sure...in either case, the head was the major casualty. I still don't know enough about the engines yet to make an informed guess. If it was a old KZ motor, I would safely say that it would have had to break the timing chain (resulting in the valves hitting each other or the piston) or it would have taken some serious over revving (like in the 12K zone)for it pull a good valve or keeper set apart. |

I thought the Blast had a rev limiter, was the motor modified? What's a KZ motor? |

I don't know if you've all seen the new Royal Enfield "Bullet Classic" as unveiled in Cologne last week. The website for some cool flash stuff is: http://www.bulletclassic.com/ The new motor has fuel injection and hydraulically adjust valves, no kick start (!), and unit construction (one place for lubricants). I think that muffler is for "off-road" use only. Probably will get to the US in Spring of 2009. Here are 2 photos:
They patterned it after a late 1940's Model G Enfield. Did a good job of it, I think. The guys at the Enfield forum are predicting MSRP of a little past $6K. |

A Blast will still spank that puppy and still have 1 1/2 gears to go - lol & better reliability! EZ |

I don't know what that little gate is supposed to do. So I can't say as its working or not. When I rev it up it rises up when it idles it just vibrates there. I can't see any choking action. is it supposed to be more resistant to popping up in the first few seconds of running? I'll see how it goes when I get the new connector in there. With the air box assembled it starts a lot nicer than it does with the air box disassembled. Its gaining air or losing fuel somewhere. The bike only has 2400 miles on it. So its been sitting more or less for the last 7-8 years. Its a 2001. There's something else I keep meaning to check and can never remember it.. damn.. I checked the spark.. thats fine. I guess I'll see about disassembling the carb.. checking the diaphragm. Is there a carb rebuild kit out there? |

Sika...Yes a blast has a rev limiter...the motor was modified with high ratio rockers..and a KZ is a old (ceased production of the chain driven 1000 and 1100cc versions in the mid 80's, with the king of the mountain being the GPZ1100..a shaft driven Police version stayed in production a bit longer..the 750cc version stayed in production as the Zephyr into the late 90's or early '00's) Kawasaki inline DOHC 4 cylinder. |

I hate it when someone "brings back" a "classic". That thing is not a Royal Enfield in any true sense of the word. It's like the Russian copies if a BMW...or the Chinese copies of Honda Z models...or the copies of early Ford Mustangs and Chevy Camaro bodies...If somebody buys one of those to have a piece of history...they are delusional. There is a small bike shop that was selling "Enfields" locally...they had to put catch pans under the new bikes on the showroom floor to keep the oil off the carpet...maybe some chinese company will start building some "replica" Harrey Davis "K" models. |

No doubt the Blast will outperform and outlast the Royal Enfield. I wish it looked as good as the RE. Fast1075, it IS a Royal Enfield. The original company split production so they were made in both England and India. The English plant folded while the Indian plant continus to make the 350cc and 499cc models. 350cc is more common in India and is considered a large powerplant there.
Too bad the quality control has really lagged behind. But the new motor is "supposed" to be much improved. I'd wait and see before buying one. New stuff can sometimes have problems (see 1125R). |

Dingosm8: Go to the carburetor section and read up on previous people's ills. There are lots of things you can check before you get a rebuild kit. If it's been sitting, does it currently have new, clean gasoline? Did you try a bottle of fuel treatment, octane boost, HEET, or those sorts of things? If you get no fast idle at all when it starts cold, but once it warms up it runs relatively well, then you are not getting autoenrich. The Blast is on the lean side stock, so anything wrong can make it hard to start. |

well I am DEFINITELY not getting auto enriching then. It does the opposite of high idle. Chug chug chug cough. Start.. chug chug chug cough... I;ll fix that. I really can't figure out how this old message board works. I got the "trouble shooting down. Other than that.. its an old converted mail list? random posts.. archive.. Hard to search and all. When I happen to stumble on something Its usually good stuff though. |

oh.. yes. First thing I did was take off the tank.. put it on the floor and kick it so the valve would open draining all the gas out onto my garage floor. I was going to sea foam it or something. But its also apparently in need of auto choke. Any one have the related part numbers?? Is there an exploded diagram out there so I don't have to go to the dealer? Not a bad dealer but you know some parts guys and their "well why'd you wan't to do that, why, why why.. well I guess.. you sure? " Then they get you the wrong part anyway. If they will even give me the part number. Ordering it is right out. I asked them if they had the intake coupler. They wanted $45. It has an msrp of something like 11. What crooks. I won't tell you what I paid for my XB. |

It used to be worse - then I came along, and categorized stuff and split it up into semi organized setions - sure there is off topic all over, however, if it is new info - I'll place it in the right category - really though - there is 10 years of Blast info here - all you have to do is hunt through the catagories. I do plan to add a Buell Blast History section to the FAQ but really - its pretty well organized - its no logical manual, but it is operatable for getting the information your looking for. If your in a big rush, just ask, I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction, we all try to pay it forward here, because you never know when your turn may be next! Of course theres always the Oak tree and Torque wrench system to assure you got it right! EZ |

yar... I've never seen a board like this one. Used to the vBulletin style. Or the news groups thread style. Never heard of discussion pro. The faq section is reasonably readable. So.. My enrichener is not working, but I can get it started and warm enough to idle. (anyone have a part number for that?) And it runs a lot better with the idle air adjustment screw out about 2 turns. SO.. maybe I do have an air leak somewhere.. the idle air was was bottomed out from the factory. I've got a more interesting question. I get mist or exhaust coming out the carburetor when I rev it. I have never witnessed that before. That can't be normal can it? How can it suck in air and fuel and blow it out as well? Is that serious leaky valves? Or is this some less serious phenomenon that I'm not familiar with? My daughter's Blast Will not run in Neutral with the side stand down, unless the clutch lever is pulled. If the sidestand is up, everything is fine. The neutral light is working correctly, so I don't think the problem is with the Neutral switch. I can't quite figure where the problem might be. Anybody got any ideas? |

Mine does the same thing. The guy i bought it from said its always been that way. There's a kick-stand switch right? Probably dead/shorted or not shorting.. whatever its job is. Yea.. makes warming it up kind of a pain. I was reading you could turn around the little diodes in the fuse box or something to bypass that.. but I've had no luck with it. I have a bungee cord for my engine trouble shooting. |

Sounds like the neutral switch isn't in the loop. Does it die if you put it in gear and try to go with the kickstand down? 27782-00Y is the autoenrich part number. Before you change it, pull the old one out and clean things up where it goes in the carb with carb cleaner and see if that works. To check it electrically, put it in the freezer for 5 minutes, then connect it to 12 volts. It should slowly push out. If it doesn't move, it's probably stuck out. Set your idle screw to about 2 1/2 turns, maybe slightly more, from bottom. I was going to say, "You should have seen it before Ed got ahold of it!" But, he beat me to the punch. |
