I've noticed that my speedometer readings are off. When I go by the police trailers with a radar gun and speed readouts my speedometer always reads high. If my speedometer says I'm going 25 mph the radar will say 22 or 23.

Do they all read like that or is it just mine?

Zane - Mine is almost identical to yours. In school zones, the speedo seems to always be a bit high. I have passed a couple with limits at 45 or 55, and the speedo was actually exact.

My route to work takes me past an elementary school that has a cross walk with an automatic radar gun and display. Approaching it at an indicated 35 it will display 32. Last week there was one on the entrance road to my neighborhood. My indicated speed was 25 and the radar readout was 23mph.

Guess it's good to keep me from getting tickets but I'd rather have it accurate and let ME decide.

If you have a pocket size GPS, it would be more accurate to put it in logging mode and drive around (with it in your pocket, don't try to hold it hehe) at exact speeds as much as possible then when you get home view the triplog on the GPS to see what speeds it recorded.

The speedo is optomistic for a reason Zane..we have it pretty easy in Florida...35ish is generally ok in a 35 zone...lots of places will pop you for ONE mph over...my problem isn't the speedo..my problem is the throttle. ; )

Harry,

It's very strange. When I'm in my P/U truck I drive like some little old man but when I'm on the Blast, I have the same issue as you do Harry...lol.

PS. I scraped the peg again Saturday while riding two up with my 14 year old son on the back. Very cool!

I went for a nice long ride with a friend yesterday afternoon...we stopped to have a bottle of water and a State Trooper came easing in...he parked and went in and got a coke...came out and walked over to where we were sitting...looked the bikes over, commented on how they looked...then in a casual sort of way mentioned how if he caught somebody exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 mph, or driving "agressively"...he would by law be compelled to arrest such hooligans and take them to jail....we assured the officer that we both carry cell phones and would report ; ) any such behavior.

We had just finished running my favorite section of road..why do they post 45 mph speed limits where it is no problem to run 80+ ???? Not that WE would do that

Stationary radar usually reads slower than actual speed. It measures the closing speed between the radar gun and the target, but usually the target isn't moving STRAIGHT toward the gun - the gun would have to be in the middle of the road or on the outside of a turn for the target to be moving straight toward the radar. Otherwise, the radar will be over to the side of the target's direction of travel, so it will approach the gun at an angle. The closer it gets, the wider the angle and the slower the indicated speed. But at straighter angles they can be pretty accurate.

Hmmm.. Had not thought about that. Next time they have the radar trailer in my neighborhood I'll approach it a couple of different ways to see what it does.

Thanks Berkshire, good info.

LOL there are a couple of new laws in Florida...if you get caught doing a wheelie..go to jail. If you get caught going more than 50mph over the speed limit..you go to jail.

I'm not real worried about either of those on my Blast....yet ; )

Give it 3 months Harry, any man that would grease the bearing on his new hand cart won't be able to keep his hands out his m/c engine.....

But while you're in jail, I'll keep your blast from getting dusty.
