EZ and Spooky, I was only half kidding - pick up an extra end cap, and punch or drill a hole in the end just large enough to accomodate the probe. Use it for the dyno run, then replace with the intact one when finished. As far as I know, that sensor has to be inside the pipe, not sitting at the exit, to get a good reading. (someone with a better understanding correct me on this if I'm wrong). David |

David, You are right about the probe needs to be inside of the pipe at the end. Having an extra end cap is not a bad idea. Eric |

CJ, I'm doing well. We had our BRAG ride yesterday, and the weather was great. It was in the 80's. Today is the same, tomorrow... http://www.weather.com/weather/local/91709 I shouldn't brag about the weather. I feel sorry for you guys who lives where it snows. I don't know if a could hack one of your winters. I think that us SoCal riders should host a late Jan/early Feb ride. All you people who live where it shows should trailer your bike out here, ride around for a week and trailer it back home. It would probably help with some of the winter insanity that must occur when you can't ride your bike for extended periods of time. I'm sure that us SoCal riders could organize something like that. On a personal level, work is getting boring so I'm looking for a new one (the one I have is not in jeopardy). I'm hoping that I can get enough cash out of a home refinance to buy some property that my neighbor owns and build a garage (and maybe buy another Buell). Karen and the cats are happy and healthy. Karen will probably get a kitchen remodel out of this new garage deal (and maybe a used Blast). I hope that she catches the Motorcycle Bug. All in all, life is good. James |

Belt broke again... only 4 or 500 miles on it (the belt that is) thank bob it weighs so little or that 3/4 mile walk, half being uphill, with her would have killed me. |

Kyuss- That is NOT cool - though I'm sure you've figured that out by now. Who's installing the belts? Have you changed or inspected the sprockets? Still have the belt guards? Fill us in! -Saro |

I am quite attached to this bike and I know most of you are as well. But I am wondering how the blast stacks up to most other brands of bikes (excluding harley) for reliability? I haven't gone more than 1000 or more miles without something, anything going wrong or breaking. Like I said I love this bike to death but the downtimes are killing me! Especially in the remote area in which I live. wondering, kyuss |

A local shop that works on custom bikes and harleys. It's a pain in the ass to get to Burlington, VT (closest AUTHORIZED dealer) without owning a truck. Last time he just put the belt ON and nothing else. I did notice once this one came off that the sprocket only seemed to be getting worn down on one side (the back side). The only guard I have on is the front sprocket cover. How much is a rear sprocket? looks like I may need one... and is that normal at 14K miles? |

Kyuss, that sucks! I hope that you figure out what's causing it. An off beat thought... Have you crashed recently? If you have, you could have tweaked the swingarm enough to cause belt tension problems. Also, check the sprockets like Saro suggested to make sure a rock didn't damage them. I have almost 20,000 miles on my original belt. As far as reliability, Saro, EZ and I have fairly high milage Blasts and you can read our profiles for problem details. I think that my Blast has had some fairly unique problems, and aside from them it has been pretty darn reliable. Heck, look at the Honda Goldwing recall thread. James |

It was ran over two months ago by a Pizza delivery boy. I took it to an authorized dealer and thet replaced everything that was wrong. They did find parts that were, unnoticeable by the naked eye, tweaked but nothing on the swingarm. The rattling noise from the bike at about 4000rpm hasn't gone away. I thought it was the foot peg since I don't use my feet on them except to break or shift and that's where it sounds like it's coming from. Any chance that has/had something to do with it? |

Kyuss- Take a picture of that rear sprocket and post it. Not sure what you mean. The belts are VERY sensitive to how they're installed / handled. I have no idea about the local shops qualifications - but let's just say I generally hold their mechanical skills in low regard. I wonder if the swingarm might have a slight tweak to it causing constant belt flex or something. Also, the service manual states that the rear sprocket and belt must be changed at 15,000 miles. Not sure why that is but I did follow the recommendation. Our Blast is one fuel tank away from 19,000 miles. Loli rides the snot outta that thing - and I trust it to get her where she's going. Mind you that this is with me being the exclusive wrench on that bike. The Blast is a decent little bike when appropriately cared for! Problem is that no matter how much effort Erik Buell and gang put into making the Blast a reliable and economical (and quirky-cool!) steed, it doesn't take much from careless hands to upset their efforts. All I can say is that there's probably a fairly simple problem with a fairly simple cure. Frustration must be setting in - and nobody should have to deal with that much crap just to have a bike. BUT sometimes when you really dig something mechanical you've gotta get some grease under your fingernails. -Saro |

Hate to say it (sorry for the late response - moving into a larger office) but it looks like you should probably have replaced the sprocket as well. Don't feel too bad about it, its just that time and wear do add up. God knows - I've messed with the carb so much that I've had to replace the float 3 times - lol. This time belt and sprocket - eh? - You've got me curious though - James what does your's look like? Saro? How about yours Ray? - (I figure all your dynos and salt would add up to that much wear;0)) - any other high mialage Blasterds showing sprocket wear? Mine looks a little worn - but not near that drawing - lol Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

36 degrees and it snowed today... so I might as well wait 'til the spring. Especially since it has to be towed 200+ miles to get fixed. I'll just prep her for winter. Winter... so damn long up here! I'd be double (30K) in miles if I lived somewhere with only 2 seasons. |

Seasons? - what are those? - here its foggy/drizzly and cold in the morn, cloudy or clear in the afternoon with temps between 50 to 90, and the evenings are a repeat of the mornings - lol. Well at least that will give you some personal time with your loved one (your bike - lol). Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

Kyuss & EZ- I'll snap a pic of the removed sprocket tonight. I don't remember such odd wear on it - but I wasn't looking for it either. -Saro |

Kyuss, It's an easy change new sprocket new bolts, a #40 Torx bit or 3 and a ft/lb torque wrench. It takes all of 60 minutes start to finish. Why take it somewhere when you can do very well and it's easy. If you do decide to do it yourself find a good quality torx bit and not the ones with the middle drilled out. Those bolts are damned tight. I've changed mine several times without a problem. Mine doesn't show anywhere near that much wear though, damn. Let us know how it goes, that could very well be the cause of your belt breaking problem. You might also check the alignment of your wheels. If you have a long straight edge, I use a 5 ft level. Then place it flat against the rear tire and measure the distance it clears the front. Repeat on both sides it should be the same within a very small amount. I figured this out while setting up the side car on mine. Ray |

Can't find the camera but I took a looksie at the 15,000+ mile sprocket. It looks NOTHING like what Kyuss posted. Kyuss- I'd say change the sprocket AND belt. Also, I'd try to determine why it wore that way in the first place. Maybe you have an out of spec swingarm or SOMETHING. Also, do you still have the sprocket cover on there? -Saro |

Sounds like something is off... I'll check the wheel alignment(thanksRay) and the swingarm. Saro, yes, my sprocket cover is still on. I'm starting to think my dealer missed something after the Pizza guy incident. |

Blast for sale. Yeah I know this isn't the classifieds. Engine by Aaron Wilson. Bonneville record by Susan Wilson. Detuned for the street. I added Xroads rearsets and forkbrace, White Bros E Series muffler and Buell Pro Intake. Less than 2000 miles on one of the best Blasts ever built. And a good portion of those miles were on Nallin's Dyno. I'm too tall for the ergo's, especially for longer rides. A special bike. I paid $3000 for it and put in another $1000. If anybody is thinking of buying a new Blast, this bike is twice the bike and will cost you less than a new one. If you are interested, ping me and I'll try to list all the mods that make this the Best Blast Ever.}} edited by ezblast on October 06, 2003 |
