New Jersy and New York, Dallas, LA, SF, Miami - all high dollar rip off cities - its damn sad thing to hear - I pay less than half for the works at a reputable SF MC shop and know that for two generations these guys have been doing this - and are worth it. Now I'll probably do my own - lol - doesn't sound like a deal - get a few quotes from other HD/Buell shops and see where you stand there - somebody needs to justify- your being hosed.

Hey guys, here is a link to a ride report to homecoming that I posted in the "Big, Bad, and Dirty" section. It may also interest some people here because of my 15 year old son riding a 2002 Blast from Colorado to Wisconsin...the scenic route...1500 miles one way!

Maximum - That is really cool! I got my lil '01 Blast when I was 15 as well! (I be 18 now) But 1500 miles... Oh well, I hope all goes well and he enjoys it (I'm sure he will!)

Wow Maxi,

What a great report!

When I get home tonight I will IMMEDIATELY check my front muffler bolt and make sure that I have the tools to do the same when I'm on the road.

I'd also like to compliment you and your fellows on your choice in riding gear. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have chosen bright, visible colors for my riding jacket. After my black leather stage (i.e. protective after you've gone down) I bought a dark colored textile jacket.
Now I see a rider in orange or dayglo green and I think, "what a well-appointed rider."
What a great trip to take your 15 yr old on as well. He'll have memories for a lifetime!

Maximum,
Your kid is really going to love you when you buy an aftermarket pipe for the Blast. You will be amazed just how heavy the stock muffler is.

Looks like you are having fun, good luck!

Thanks EZ.

I am assuming that there is nothing specific about a Blast's tires that would necessitate having them replaced at a HD/Buell dealership (i.e., warranty issues). That premise being accepted, and also accepting that $500 is obscene to replace both tires, what would be a reasonable charge to replace the tires (for labor, etc. only - I understand different prices in the actual tires and will rely on the tire section of the knowledge vault for tire selection).

Also, given the full-motor rebuild at 400 miles, and now another at 3,400ishh miles, has had less than optimal mileage since birth, and also given that I ride conservatively, what are suggested reasons that the engine needs two rebuilds before 5k miles? Should I try to get another extended warranty or pursue lemon law/warranty remedies? But, I LOVE my little Blast and it fits perfectly into my lifestyle . . .

Happy Fourth for all those who can ride this weekend (while my bike celebrates with its new, sick Buell friends at Bergen HD/Buell . . .)!!!!!

$25 for labor is acceptable. $35 isn't really bad. I get mine done for $10, but that's rare. Pirellis are about $110 for a pair. Somewhere in the depths of the Thumper forum is a Tires section that has all the details, including links to good prices.

Well, you're really not getting a rebuild just replacing the top end gaskets (unless they ARE going to rebuild it?). I doubt they'll do the rings unless they really think it needs it (we think you should do it anyway, but you may get reamed on extra labor).
Again, my reasoning is your bike is only as reliable as the last guy who worked on it.
Dont you already have a 5 (6?) year warranty?

PS unless they really are doing a rebuild, dont let them drag their feet on it. Top end gaskets are very simple to do and if you'd told them its your only transportation, they should get it back to you asap.

I had my horn quit working a couple days ago. Sent email to BikerHiway.com asking about warranty stuff. Here's the meat of the reply:

We are sorry to hear that your relay stopped working. We are shipping you a new relay.

Cool, huh?

Hi, quick question? I just had a Pirelli MT75 Rear tire put on and took my wife out for a ride. We cruised for about 40 miles with a Full tank of gas and had no problems whatsoever. On the way home I made a left turn leaned over pretty far and heard a loud noise. Thinking something fell off the bike, I went back to the intersection and scanned around but found nothing. So we proceeded to go home and every time I hit any kind of dip or bump in the road(even going slow) it made this noise. I looked at the back and it looks like it's bottoming out. I had already shaved the bottom part of the fender off up to the License plate but it seems to be hitting. So my question is, is the Pirelli a taller tire than the Dunlop? And if so why did it not bottom out before when we rode? Keep in mind that combined we weigh 320 to 330 lbs. Any help or insight?

Are you running 36PSI? Check the bottom of your exhaust. That's where it'll bottom out.

Hello, I've decided it's time to get a bike for mainly commuting and the Blast seems like the perfect choice.
I've run across a couple bikes on craigslist and last weekend met up with the seller and drove one. I have a couple questions for the board experts to see what you think about this bike and see if you think it's a good deal. It's an '02 with 3k miles, no mods, no obvious damage but, it does look like it's spent some of its life outside (faded plastic, small rust on hardware), it needs a new rear tire but, the seller is going to replace that. The bike seemed to drive and handle ok but, I'm not sure I'd pick up on anything wrong anyway. The only thing that concerned me was the clutch. I know these bikes have a very short friction zone but, the clutch seemed to grab when it engaged and with the lever close to all the way out and with a audible chatter. Is this normal for the Blast or am I right to suspect an upcoming repair? The seller was asking $2700, I negotiated to $2400. This is within my price range but, obviously don't want to spend more than I should especially if the bike will need major repairs in the near future.
I have found quite a few Blasts on craiglist but, always seem to call after they've sold. This one is one of the last remaining in my area and if it is overpriced that would explain why.

Welcome sycho!
Its not the tire, (but do check the tire pressure),definitely check the exhaust for scrapes. Also check the kickstand and kickstand spring.

PS What zip? I'm 92806 (branch 1100).

Welcome drew!
Yeah $2400 is a bit high, but this is the right time to sell (not buy).
Yes the clutch seems grabby and all the way out, but its not supposed to chatter. A change in fluids might remedy the problem, but it could be more (poor clutch adjustment, loose chain, bad clutch plates or?) If you're handy with a wrench, it wont be a big deal and 3000 is low miles. This is the first time I've heard of one with clutch 'chatter' though.
At $2000, I'd say buy it. I'd like to see what others think.

OK, I'm a spy. I have an 01 S3T but my wife has an 03 Blast and a problem. The only ignition key was lost or stolen. Any great ideas on how to fix this? The local HD dealer is less than helpful and I'd rather not replace the whole switch assembly if it can be avoided. I had to do that with my TBolt but that was in Las Vegas with a very Buell-friendly HD dealer. He sold me a Sportster set for a good price and I wired it in in about 30 minutes.

Hey, hows it going guys. New Blast owner. Bought a used 2003. Loving every minute on her. Only had one problem so far and that was the boot. Thats actually how I found the site. Thanks for the great info. Been browsing though everything. Does anyone know if there is a Buell group in the Raleigh NC area? Been looking, but no luck.

The HD dealer wont sell you a key?
If you had the original key #, you should be able to order one from Buell.
A locksmith should be able to make you a key if you bring him the switch and DMV registration. Keys are regularly available on e-bay and some other keys fit (Volvo?-theres a thread here somewhere).

i remember reading about ez wanting to paint his rims cause he has the perma-dirt wheres its "polished"
this might help:
this is the rim before

so clean the rim with brake clean
then apply this

rub in till black, then buff off with a clean clothe.
after one application it looks like this

black still comes off so if u wanted to be a perfectionist (like me) just keep buffing on and off till it doesn't turn black, or as black haha

i would invest in a drill driven buffer disk.
would help a ton. i plan on taking the wheels off and removing the disk's, polishing with a drill, then painting the "rough" parts black.
theres some wheel specific paint at autozone. but i was thinking of using caliper paint. that would be tough stuff.

well this clear that i have is made for wheels.
i also figure that after i polish the rim lips that the clear would prevent that ever dirt crap from happening so easily.
thats cool, if you get done before i do post pics and let me know how it went.
