Wow, That must have been quite the ride. Wife and a couple kids can change your perspective on things doesn't.
My father always believed that maintenance was a waste of money. When something broke, you could tell real easy what needed to be fixed. Needless to say he never owned a bike.
I'm just to opposite. Being tight as a mallard's rear end (water tight) I believe maintenance is cheaper than repair. Must work because my Toyota Tacoma has 152,000 miles on it and the only repair I've had so far is a starter at 149,000 miles.
Beside, it saves the hassle of a break down. |

I just can't leave anything alone...I have an evil compulsion to tinker...I have a '91 Jeep Comanche that I bought for 1K to fix up because it is well...different from other trucks...2 years and about 6K in Mods, it is nearly perfect mechanically..just badly needs paint...good investment...not even...good fuel mileage nope...but it would climb a vertical wall if it had enough traction, and it will go thru mud clean up to the headlights...I bought a new hand truck last week...the next day I was lubing the wheel bearings with silicone grease to reduce rolling resistance...and foamed the tires so they can't go flat...lol!!!!
Now my Blast is ........evolving...
P.S. Zane.....the stock muffler along with all the mounting hardware awaits for if you want it.

Comanche, huh? I always tell my wife that if I got a pickup, it'd be a Comanche. I drive a 92 Cherokee when I'm not Blasting. |

I started out on a 70-horse 1200 Sporty (souped, yes) and moved onto a 1100 Goldwing Aspencade so I've been bigger, stronger and faster. I, too, am looking to buy an XB when the time is right and the money is available, but I do love my Blast. It gets me around town and down the highway in ways neither the Sporty nor the Wing could do.
It fell over in what may have been a tornado/downburts a week ago and it was easy to pick up by myself and suffered only scratches to the plastic, no cracks.
It's a tough little blastard and I guess I respect that. At 6,000 I've had no problems except a minor gear oil leak around the clutch cable and now I have to get new tires.
This summer I'm going to try and do a 1300-mile, week-long trip on it. You don't have fun with the toys you want, you have fun with the toys you've got..... |

I started riding dirt bikes at 12 and my first road bike as a 1963 triumph bonn 650 -wire actuated drum brakes front and back. I got it in 84. I worked on that bike more than I rode it. I gave up on it in 04. I got a blast. The blast starts ever time. Stops with one finger, rather than a death grip. I know about complaints of vibration but man up the blast is smooth. On my bonni I would be numb below my shoulders after 30 minutes. Sure the blast will only go 92 mph and consumes some oil. It doesn't leak it. It is a great bike. I still have my blast in my garage. Its there for two reasons when gas hits $6 gallon and to teach my son to ride once he gets his head out of his *$$. I ride an xb9s which I got from my brother in law. I didn't go looking for it, it came to me. I was happy with the blast. The blast only really needs two things: a) fuel injection, b) 6 speeds. If you ride your blast until you have reacted the limits of its power and handling - you’re a competent rider. It's that the goal? Think of your blast like a miata - good handling, reliable, fast enough for back roads not all that fast on the highway. But lots of fun. The alternative is to push your 63 bonni (I think I pushed it more than I rode it) to the closest bar, stand next to it with a beer then pushing it home. |

I put another 20 or so miles on the Blast tonight. I love this thing more and more every time I climb on it. I'm still doing what I call instruction miles, just learning what it feels like and building confidence in bike and it's abilities. I'm not pushing it hard at all, just learning what things are supposed to feel like, learning it's sounds so I know when to shift and in general just letting the bike teach me what I need to know.

Ez,
I agree, I'm not interested in driving hard or scraping the pegs. I'm just tooling around town and having a great time (a Blast?) doing it. I had to run an errand tonight so I took the bike instead of the truck. The air was cool, the traffic was light and it was just a complete pleasure to be out and about on her.
As I predicted though, the hardest thing so far is keeping my 17year old from running away with it. He asked if he could ride it last night, I said yes and he was gone for more than an hour. Every time he rides it he says he's GOT to get one for himself. He is going to take the MSF course in about two weeks. By then school will be out and he'll be working full time for the summer. He plans to own his own Blast by August. |
