I didn't mean I've been here for a long time ... just that I've been using "spidrman" as my online name everywhere for a long time (since the days of Windows 3.1).

I'm guessing that since dumb people on motorcycles tend to end up as "Darwin Awards" that everybody here is intelligent and fully literate and will be able to tell the difference between us. : D

I'll even come up with a signature line for my posts so we're easy to tell apart.

hey there, first time posting on here, though i think i've scoured most of the site. recently got a 2005 blast with 230 miles on it. i am thrilled with it. my previous bike had been an old yamaha 750 that weighed about twice as much. i am in love with this bike. the only thing i am not digging is without a fairing my hands get pretty cold on the freeway this time of year. does anyone know if it is a big deal to mount ulysses style hand guards on the Baby Buell? i think this would make a huge difference and might look kinda cool too. any ideas?

See the handlebar section in the TKV - I have instructions there on how to do exactly that!

thanks everyone for the info on the blast, i learned more in 5 minutes on this forum than 30 minutes in the harley dealership! I am signed up for the Riders Edge Program down in southern VA and have to wait until June, I guess learning how to ride a motorcycle on the salt and ice of winter isnt a good way to start out......I have been comparing the blast to the nighthawk and ninja......the nighthawk basically hasnt changed in the past 20 years and looks like something for deliveries, and the ninja has too much plastic for my liking and one fall and it would look horrible. At least with the blast the parts are easy to find and a fall wouldnt be as noticable. .....Thanks again!

From the mouth of Blast mis-information - before I tear this up, I thought I'd let everyone else take a shot at it -

's time again for me to state the Truth, like it or not. And those
who may refute this- have NO Facts to back them up.

On other Buell "Enthusiast" websites, certain "Kool-Aid" drinking-
Bedwetting individuals continue to Propagate Myths and Lies that
bolster the Blast as being a "Bulletproof" motorcycle or the
most "Reliable" of all H-D/Buell bikes, but this my fellow members,
is simply not true, and there are NO facts to back up such
assertations, but there ARE quite a few facts to the contrary.

Ok now, lets run down a common list of repeated failures that Plague
the Blast. (in no particular order)

1) Intake boot/Manifiold coupler failures. (cracks/tears)
2) Exhaust system failures.(cracks in various locations)
3) Front motor mount failures.(some catastrophic)
4) Wheel bearing failures.(reputedly confined to early years)
5) Oil pump drive gear failures. (can be catastophic to motor)
6) High oil consumption- leading to early top end rebuilds because of
excess carbon/oil fouling.
7) Ignition module failures(reputedly confined to early years)
8) Ultra Fast rear tire wear(especially now with OEM Pirelli)
9) Shifting failures, caused by cheap 50ยข detent retaining clips.
10) Should leaking rocker box gaskets be included? Because even the
2nd Gen upgrade "All Metal" rocker box gaskets are known to start
leaking at higher mileages, thats why Harley has gone to the 3rd Gen
rubber coated metal- "Cometic type" gaskets, for all oil sealing
gaskets.

Soooooo....there is the common list of things that sooner or later -
Every Buell Blast will succum to. It's true, if you keep your Blast
long enough, everyone of the failures WILL occur ! Granted, alot of
those won't rear their ugly heads until probably after 20,000 miles,
but no Blast is immune. Although another fact is, more than half of
those failures cannot occur on a Harley of Bigger V-Twin Buell
because they aren't designed the same, and/or they have upgraded
parts in the critical areas (oil pump drive gear as an example).

There is one common demoninator for some of those failures, and that
is- their occurance is related to excess engine vibrations, although
somewhat isolated from the rider- the blast motor is the most severe
vibrating engine that Harley builds, and sooner or later, parts
failures occur because of these severe vibrations. And then there
are the almost silent failures, that occur as you pile on the higher
mileages, and the oil pump drive gear is the one that specifically
comes to mind....oh there IS an upgrade part for this gear- which is
OEM now on all Harleys and Buells- Except for the Blast! But it's
omission in the Blast is another one of Buell's cost cutting
features, as Buell Moco considers the Blast a Throw-away bike, and
hopes you'll upgrade to a Bigger Buell(or Harley?) before your
warranty runs out, so the next owner of the Blast will have to pay
for repairs to the bike himself.

So how does all of this add up to the Blast being "Bulletproof" ? I
mean geez... you can buy a brand new Ninja 250 or Honda Nighthawk 250
or Yamaha Virago 250 and only have the first break-in service done,
and then never take it back for another service for 30,000miles and
never have ANY of the failures listed above ! So if the Blast is
Considered "Bulletproof" what does it make them- "Immortal" !?

Yeah, I know a few of you are shaking your heads again, and ready to
refute my statements, and if you have 100% Proof- go for it, if not-
maybe you should guzzle your Kool-Aid and hang out with the
other "Enthusiast" on the site that propogates such myths to newbies.
I mean look at it this way- what do you expect from an "Enthusiast"
site, did you really think that nay saying would be allowed there?
Hell, you'll get banned from any enthusiast site for alot of the
things that are said on this site, but I allow then to be said-
because they are the truth, and THIS site is especially geared toward
the newbie entering the sport, and they SHOULD know the WHOLE TRUTH
before committing to purchase.

Oh yeah, one last thing, and you've read this HERE before, and even
on many other "Enthusiast" sites as well. And that is, Buell/H-D
dealers HATE the Blast, they hate selling them, and they hate working
on them, and don't forget- you'll pay those High Harley hourly
service rates if you depend on the Buell Dealer to do all your
maintenance and repairs....which is what alot of Newbies have no
choice but to do. Seriously, those other "Kool-Aid" Buell sites want
to make you into a Buell Tech so you do ALL your own service work,
but come on- how many of you really want to become that dedicated ?

From the mouth of Ralph the Third - lol - he just doesn't get it - he has been wrapped up in his own site for so long that he has totally failed to check the reality of what he is saying - denying real statistics, and putting up as fact the defects a few bikes experience - the only consistent problem that the Blast has ever had has been the intake boot - the numbers of the rest of the problems he lists are very small and easily comparable to other mfgr.s part failure rates on any bike.

The number of folks banned on this site - not counting spammers - is less than 5 - so I figure you have to be a real ass to get banned.

The dealerships are turning around - the Blast is easy to work on, and so its easy money for them - the reason we tell you to do it yourself is to save that money - 100+ per hour adds up quick - if you are rich - be my guest and have them do it - lol

I could really tear this apart on a lot of levels, however, I also believe in freedom of speech - Ralph - as I - has a first year bike and experienced many of the woes stated - as I - yet I have practically heard no complaints from folks with 2003 and over Blasts - so I stand by what I say, and Ralph ole buddy - you need to ride more and type less - lol

plastic can be easily painted. best way to do this is to remove the plastics and take the parts to a mom and pop bodyshop

Welcome back Naustin!!!

Welcome luvmyBuell2!
Pink has been done and some pink bodywork was on ebay awhile back.
Paying a professional certainly should be the most reliable way to get it done. It can be done yourself. White can also be dyed pink. I think dyeing instructions are on Badweb somewhere. Not sure if would be perfect, might also come out in a cool psychedelic effect!

Let's see--according to the text, I should see all those problems by the time I reach 20K. I had evidence that #1 would happen soon, but not yet, after the 20K mark. I had #2 happen because bolts weren't tightened. I had a bolt go on #3, but now that I replaced it myself, I've not had a problem. #4? Every front wheel drive I've ever owned had wheel bearing failures. #8 is normal for a single with high torque. #10 was fixed about a year after the Blast was introduced.

I lugged my engine a lot when I didn't know what I was doing. I was a new rider after all. The rest of those things haven't happened. I'm past 31K, so what's wrong with my Blast that it isn't breaking enough? Shall I crash it again? Maybe that's what it needs.

" I'm past 31K, so what's wrong with my Blast that it isn't breaking enough? Shall I crash it again? Maybe that's what it needs." I know that was 'tongue in cheek', but generally propaganda thats put forth as above makes you doubt your bike with every little cough, tickle or rattle your bike produces. Though mostly untrue or exaggerated, it promotes people getting rid of their Blast (or whatever the propaganda is pointed against) ASAP.
Sad to find what initially appears to be an 'enthusiast' website, really wants to make you feel bad about the bike you were just so excited to have purchased.
Badweb is a true enthusiast website, striving to help you get the most enjoyment out of your Buell. We discuss them warts and all, but without the undertone of maybe you should have bought a different brand.

Yea - Ole Ralph is really getting toasty in his latter years - he even put a poll up asking the 1000 plus members if any of those had happened - only 17 responses - - mostly das boot, a head bolt , an exhaust, and a couple wheel bearings - yet he wants to make it an epidemic - talk about reaching - he should stick to Sportster web sites and give up on the Blast - although he said he'd never ride a HD product - he is - LOL

anyone have a good lead on a better pipe.

we just got rid of the gf's 01 blast with 11,000 on it and she will be riding her 04 blast with 132 miles on it this summer.

i can pick up the V&H pipe all day long here at work for a good price, but it is looking more likely that my box full of xb parts will be finding the way to her new ride. after i throw on the head, piston, cams and S/E ignition and crank up the revlimit i would like a pipe that helps, and doesnt hinder it. now i may give up a BIT of power to have something that isnt obnoxious though also.

then i still have to decide on an intake, the correct jetting... but the main thing that held me back from doing it on her other one is the timing issue. i know i can just make a new timing notch, or notch the cam but it would be soooo much easier if i just sold my blast pro series cams and the xb cams to buy a set of the sportster performance cams that just bolt in with the right timing notch.

Mount the Jardine with the old stock or new stock - its not expensive - front lower hardware and you'll be golden - with the quiet core your at the same power as the V&H, with out your at the same noise level but more power - if you slaped a D&D can on that header, it would get a tad louder but also gain a couple more ponies as well - the other alternative is a 4" universal Supertrapp with all 12 discs - quiet and performance (though you'll have to make some simple custom bracketry to mount) - and if your buying new - probably less expensive than the D&D can.

Found a couple of used Blasts and would like some advice.

One is an '01 with 1,850 miles. Has been dropped but he says the only damage was some scratches to the wind screen ferring... (is that possible?). He said he shaved down the wind screen. New battery, new spark plug, new Perelli tires. He says he will get it serviced before the sale.

The other is an '02 with 3,050 miles. Guy says it is in great shape... but has never been serviced. Does anyone know how this will affect the bike? He says he put on a new Jardine exhaust (if he did I can't tell from the photos) and low straight handle bars. He said the bike had been sitting for a while so he had to put a new battery in. I'm kinda assuming as it hasn't been serviced, that he doesn't know what he is doing.

What do you guys think?

What other questions should I ask to help decide?

No Rice. I'm sure there's a couple of Blasterds interested in your cams. Even though the notching of either cam or cup is relatively easy, I fully understand the 'bolt in' approach.
As long as you run a 1 3/4 inch head pipe, you're good for performance (keeping in mind everything EZ stated).

If possible, can you try and run before and after dyno's (before the XB top end swap)? It would be great for the archives and to see how much the XB top end really gains. I think its good for at least 7hp, minimum. I never got the chance or thought about it to run before and after dyno's.
