I think thats always been my point - an XB Blast would cost practically ziltch in tooling - except for the rear motor mount and the up draft stack into the airbox - the airbox again would hold the carb in place - a lot of stuff - wouldn't be needed - keeping the weight down - oil coolers, fans, ducts - etc - using the lower suspension would keep the beginners safer in a comfort zone and make that specialized group of parts cheaper through volume - and by using XB engine parts more consolidation would happen - XB cam, XB9 piston and head, 7500 rpm limit - a good breathing XB 9 type exhaust - the ability to have great gas mileage, reliably do a daily commute, and the ability to have fun in the twisties on the weekend - probably 38 to the rear but 45 to the crank - torque would probably fall in the 35 range - the latest XB tranny in the Blast would be a thing of wonder (maybe bring back the cassette tranny - with the updated inyards - I know a world of Tuber owners would love him for that - since in the end for gear parts they will be quoting Blast part numbers soon enough), under piston oilers, etc. - An updated, durable, last a 100,000 mile type of bike that would be fun for the beginner and experienced - would such a bike be used in beginner classes - well if it had wheel sliders and frame sliders - sure - that hp range is within the recommended starting range, would have excellent handling - finally - a great all a rounder - a bit like a Honda Civic - lol EZ |

Hey Swampy, I don't know when/if they are going to update the Blast, but a lot of us hope so as it will be easing up on a 10 year production run if you started the design after the 1125R hoopla is over. All the tooling should be long depreciated by now, so that is a barrier to changes. As an added bonus it would give me an excuse to ride over and do a factory tour. It is also a way to pass the time as it snowed another 4 inches today. Paul |

Although the carb is decent on the Blast, how long will Buell keep it before succumbing to EFI? All Harleys have it now. Heck, even Royal Enfield is introducing EFI in their next gen motor! And those guys live in the past... |

There is nothing wrong with EFI, it can give very precise delivery of fuel and other engine controls. The main problem I see with EFI is it is difficult to modify without the proper tools and knowledge. And once you find out where the engine harness is rubbed through you can get it running again! |

With the XB head and piston - even leaner jetting would be called for - making it even more EPA friendly and even more fuel efficient. EZ |

Riding the XB9S for five years now, I really like how EFI works. No stumbling when cold, cleaner emissions, smoother running under different conditions. An updated Blast with EFI and "normal" back sprocket would be nice. |

Heck Prof - post that in the Blast Quick Board! EZ |

But with the higer compression, won't you get higher temperatures and more NOX? More NOX is cured by EGRs.......YUCK! Of course EGRs are the standard of the industry, maybe an alternative could be worked out. |

My guess is it not going to raise the temperatures enough for that to matter. I doubt the temps would be much higher and probably not as high as the water cooled engines. Though thats my uneducated guess. |

Combustion temperatures not engine temperatures, the reciruclated exhaust gas cools it. Being a fossil fuel you get carbon, and carbon deposits cause wear. But O boy, do we get the NOX down. |

Yeah, I got the point, but they're all related. I still dont think upping the compression (to a still streetable number) would be that big a deal. |

I found a Buell Retail Price Book for what the dealership charges for all Buell motorcycle parts. Didn't find anything like this on the site, so I thought I'd stick it here in case anyone is interested. It's got all the part numbers too, which should help a lot of folks out when they need to find a part number and want to know how much a part will cost. Apparently I can't post the pdf file, but this guy has it posted here: http://www.steveturnbull.co.uk/buell/Manuals/Buell %20Price%20List.pdf |

Great article. Quote: "How many of us are expert enough to extract the maximum from street-legal racing machines?" I've tried telling that to 'newbies' for years but they (mostly) just want the fastest bike and miss out on some bikes they could really enjoy! |

I was at Alice's the other day and got into a discussion about the Blast modified - the engine sounded alot - to the old time mechanics there - like a Vincent Black Shadow uncorked - which of course I had to look up - pretty impressive - so is the Blast the new Black Shadow bike? EZ |

Sorry, as much as I love the Blast, I couldnt compare it to a Vincent-pure art and performance. Some of the other Buells, maybe. |

The Vincent Black Shadow was a performance single - and the LSR header has the look of the Vincent header, while the Force header has the sound of the Vincent header - the Blast has way better brakes than the Vincent and it can be made to reach that 'ton' as well as the Vincent - I'm pretty sure the Blast handled better also - but those points are only because the bike is a very old design vs. the Blasts relatively new one. Sorry, but I've never seen a single cylinder Vincent Black Shadow. Perhaps they meant a 'Comet' or other single. (Message edited by gearheaderiko on January 23, 2008) |

If you all are looking for more pictures of road singles, here is your thread. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28 7371 Notice our own Luckyduck holding forth on the many virtues of the Blast. I thought it interesting how many comments are along the "that was a great bike and I wish I still had it" referring to compact, modestly powered bikes that are fun to drive. Paul |

Interesting.Too much rice, but great pictures of many classic singles. What a disappointment to find out the MZ uses a Yamaha engine. "What is this? I didn't know the Buell made a single???" How many times have we heard that! |

107mph and it needed a stretched swingarm? Glad it got coverage though. |
