I'll try fixing mine and if that does not work maybe just spend the $110 to get a new one from a Buell dealer. Then start looking for replacement pegs, the stock ones don't feel solid... Any of the other Buell bikes pegs should be a bolt in replacement? |

He's saying he made his own rear sets using the S3T shifter - if I where to use a Buell shifter it would probably be the revised X-1 shifter offered by Buell - looks close enough to work - can't be any worse than the Banke which looks about identical to it - it is supposed to have the most adjustment of all the revised shifters for the Tubers and is pretty much recommended where extra length for fine tunning may be needed - you can research this in the regular KV - EZ |

Thanks for the info. I may get a set of foot pegs off ebay and see if the machine shop on base will be willing to mill them and press an insert so they can be mounted. May cost a case of beer though... |

LaFayette, I'm still trying to win that argument I've been having with myself. If anyone is so inclined to help get the word out about the THUMPER Forum here, it would be great if you could post a few notes in your myspace, facebook or other online venues to which you contribute, heck your own home page if you have one, making mention of appropriate keywords/phrases like "Buell Blast Forum" or "Buell Blast Board", "Buell Blast Motorcycle" and so on and so forth, and reference http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/blast/index. htm or use it as a hyperlink URL. |

LaFayette, Thanks for the referrals. Would you think that having some personalized BadWeB/Thumper Forum business cards to hand out would be helpful? I need to get some printed for all us custodian first, but you're on the select list of longtime BadWeBrs who should get some too. As soon as we get the calendar put to bed! Ed, Thanks for the links. It is your baby. I'm just trying to put some new clothes on it and help introduce it to the world. It would help our search engine ranking if instead of just "BadWeB" the link said something like "Buell Motorcycle Forum" or any of the other examples I listed above. Ditto for your link on the yahoo site. Use the ..../buell/blast/index.htm link instead. The search engines see the "buell" and "blast" in the actual address and are reportedly much impressed. |

Dear Blastlings, I have a bit of a problem, I think. It's about 40 degrees and I've been riding around town doing my job and my clutch lever is getting stiffer and harder to pull. I've tried tracking down a small primary lube leak around the clutch cable in the past to no avail, but I doubt that it's empty. Is it just from the cold or do I have serious issues ahead? It's shifting fine and running well, it's just gotten stiff as the day's gone on. |

Rainman, make sure your crank case vent tube is clear, then see if you can put some lube down the cable from the lever end. Usually a stiff pull is because of the cable unraveling itself on the inside, I would get one to have on hand. One way you could check it is to remove the lever end from the lever and unthread the adjuster and see if the cable sleeve moves freely on the cable. |

A Ralphism - Educational Editorial, by Ralph. We recently have been discussing the specs and numbers of other bikes, showing 1/4 mi times, horsepower and toque figures etc. And dirk even brought up about how the FZ6 "has" 98hp.....note that I put HAS in quotation marks. I also want you to look over the HP/TQ figures posted below again, and notice something you may have missed before.... Suzuki LS650 Savage: H.P.= 27.8@5300rpm,Torq= 32.8ft-lb@3400 rpm Kawasaki KLR650: H.P.= 38.4@6300rpm,Torq= 34.6ft-lb@2900 rpm Kawasaki EX500 Ninja: H.P.= 52.4@9350rpm,Torq= 31.6ft-lb@7600 rpm Suzuki GS500E: H.P.= 40.7@8500rpm,Torq= 27.8ft-lb@7250 rpm Buell Blast: H.P.= 27.2@6400rpm,Torq= 25.4ft-lb@2800RPM Royal Enfield Bullet: H.P.= 16.0@4500rpm,Torq= 23.4ft-lb@2850 rpm I hope you looked PAST the actual HP/TQ numbers and noted the RPM's at which those numbers were gathered. You see, they came at different RPM's for each of the different bikes, and thats where the "Truth" is.... Many Motorcycle manufactures proudly post their "PEAK" Horsepower and torque figures- and some tests may even reveal at what RPM those numbers came at. But do YOU ever take into consideration that below those RPM, that the machine isn't making anywhere Near those HP or TQ numbers ! As an example, lets take Dirk's fave- the Yamaha FZ6 (600cc inline four cylinder), he claims it makes 98 hp, and I believe that figure maybe a little high- and probably a figure taken from the crankshaft- not the Rear wheel horsepower, but lets not argue that point and say it makes that as it's peak power. Now I don't have the specs of that bike at hand, but lets say roughly that it makes 98hp @ 10,000rpm...and actually, I think that rpm might be lower than where that peak HP figure actually comes in at. Now, if that engine is screaming down the road at 10k rpm, then it should be producing 98hp, but what would the HP be like in 6th gear at 55mph ? Taking a wild guess, lets say that 55mph in 6th gear = 5000rpm. Now if you had the bike on a dyno running 6th gear at 5000rpm, you'd probably be shocked to note the HP/TQ numbers were quite low, and I wouldn't be shocked if the numbers were something like 25 hp and 20 ft lbs of Tq at 5000rpm. So what would happen if the rider wanted to pass a truck on the highway in that situation ? Well, if he just whacked open the throttle, probably the engine pitch would change and it would start accelerating about as fast as the blast would at 55mph in 5th gear. But of course an FZ6 rider would know that, so he would have downshifted probably two gears to get the revs up and start breaking into the powerband(where the motor actually starts making REAL HP). Even still, if he only revved it upto say 8000rpm, although the bike was pulling alot harder than ANY Blast ever could, it probably still wasn't making 98hp, probably more like 60hp ? So you see, the peak numbers can be deceptive, because how many of you actually ride at the rpm's needed to produce those peak numbers !? Also note, that the higher the torque number is, the less you have to wait for RPM's to build up before accelerating faster. Although HP is important to push a top speed, it's torque that PULLS you from the lower speeds. And the lower the rpm where peak torque is produced, the quicker you will be gaining speed without excess RPM's. Another comparison is two of the bikes listed above : Kawasaki EX500 Ninja: H.P.= 52.4@9350rpm,Torq= 31.6ft-lb@7600 rpm Kawasaki KLR650: H.P.= 38.4@6300rpm,Torq= 34.6ft-lb@2900 rpm Notice that the two cylinder EX500 makes 52 HP compaered to the KLR650 thumpers' 38 hp, but note the RPM at which those numbers were produced. Also note the KLR actually produces 3 MORE ft lb of torque, and note that it comes in at only 2900rpm on the KLR, while the 500ninja needs 7600rpm to reach it's torque peak, which equals pulling power ! In real world everyday use, the KLR rider is shifting alot less than the EX500 rider to accelerate to the same speeds, and the KLR probably makes more HP at lower revs- which its torque figure suggests. So while the EX500 Ninja appears much faster on paper (which it really is), it only becomes FAST at the hands of a rider willing to run it harder thru the gears to higher RPM's -to extract it's peak power. In the end, the Ninja rider is doing more work shifting and winding out gears, while the lazy KLR rider is just chugging along like you see lots of Harley riders do. In conclusion, I hope you now see the Truth(or lies)behind the numbers. Peak Horsepower isn't everything, especially when most riders hardly ever use it. Have I enlightened any of you ? I hope so more - Dirk, I never said higher torque makes an engine rev faster, I said it makes it "Pull" harder, and usually higher torque bikes are geared higher, and have less tranny gears, where-as the high whiney IL4's with little torque- need more gears and lower over all gearing, because they just don't have enough torque to pull taller gearing. Dirk, how would you catergorize the Honda 599/Hornet like Jill used to own ? I think she considered it a naked standard- not a sportbike, and probably never even got into it's powerband at all ! On the same note, what would you call an SV650 or 650R ? Are they a sportbike or standard ? I tell you this, they've got more torque than any IL4- 600, but my 650R had little torque compared to an XL883, thats what disappointed me in the 650R. The factory literature claimed it had lots of torque, BUT no dealer would let me demo one beforehand, and after buying it and babying it thru breakin...I realized it didn't have the torque I was expecting, and that the powerband was still up pretty high and needed lots of shifting to keep in the powerzone. And considering I knew what the EFI 883's were putting out, I just had to trade up ASAP- before the 650R lost too much value. "ride a bike like it was made to be riden" ? Hmmmm....don't tell that to EZ, and on the same note, beware of Hayabusa Riders :-รพ Jack, another example(which I've used alot over the years) is to compare the Blast to the 250 Ninja. Both bikes make almost the exact same peak horsepower, but the Blast makes twice the torque, and does all this at extremely low RPM compared to the 250 ninja. On paper, and in the hands of an expert rider, the 250 ninja will beat a Blast, BUT....give both bikes to an average rider and the Blast will always beat the Ninja....mainly because average riders don't know how to hold max RPM's for peak horsepower for very long periods, and in the case of the 250 Ninja, if you ain't running it at redline, it ain't much faster than a Vespa -LOL ! My motto is: Torque is for the street, Horsepower is for the track. The older I get, the less fun it is to tap dance on the shifter. Call me lazy An interesting group of points - My question to you folk - though the majority of what he says is valid - what point is he missing concerning the Blast? The answer is simple to me - in its stock form it lives up to its name, with a few more minor mods it can be even more fun, modifying the bike to personal tastes is also part of the fun, and finally - in the end it is the way a rider rides his bike that will define what the bike is capable of. When you are very in tune with your bike you end up performing much better than the guy who doesn't know his bike and is in fact afraid of it - the biggest reason I've always pushed for the new owner to put some serious miles on the bike before selling it -to really get to know it and have fun, then step to the next bike or modify - EZ |

I used to race a Plymouth Horizon at the green light. I raced cars I had no business racing, and I beat them! I knew where it got its best power, and how to keep the engine there. It was rediculous some of the cars I'd beat. Someone's Grand Am, which had, I'm sure, at least twice the HP, had trouble catching up with me. So, sometimes it's the vehicle's capabilities, but more often, it's the driver's capabilities. |

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0KJI/is_8_1 18/ai_n16702057/ The Blast has played a pretty important part in Buell's development - perhaps someday they could throw out a couple of limited edition Blasts in Honor of all the Blast did for the Corp. My favorite thought - upgraded suspension, exhaust, and XB internals - I'd be first on the list for that puppy and it would probably sell out asap. EZ |

Good article EZ. Maybe in a couple years there will be a modern Blast. Kawasaki seems to get by with updating the KLR every 10 years. I would think an update per decade would be reasonable. I agree with EZ, but would add a 4.5-5 gallon gas capacity and keeping the current miles per gallon or better. Oh yeah, and some standard size tires, like 120x17 front and 140x17 rear. And maybe take off 20lbs or so with it ending up looking more like the CityX. Maybe this spring I will have to set up a factory visit and present a petition from the Thumper Forum. Anybody want to figure out how to do a wish list and signature collection? Paul |
