Rockbiter,

the final drive ratio is the same and fifth is 1:1, But the primary ratio is diff, so top speed is affected.

Spooky

Huh, the 2000's have a diff second, I didn't know that.

Just a note on the rear sprocket pulley. I had mine off recently while I was mounting my new rear tire. And I took the time to clean and examine the sprocket. It's a fine piece of craftsmanship. Did you know it was made in Germany? Also, it's steel. I thought it was aluminum until I put a magnet to it. It's also Teflon coated(thats NOT black paint). And I believe this unit is Forged steel. I'd love to see the machine/presses that make it. All in all, I'm very impressed with Buell engineering.

Fairwether,

I agree, It's avery nicely manufactured part, it looks like it's made with a drop hammer die or hydroformed, but It's probably made by a more refined process.
I just wish that they made it weigh a little less, look a little spiffier, and be a lot narrower!

Eric,

You may beat me off the line but... I'm better looking!
How's the 600 engine coming along? What gear ratio are you going to use?

You better stop thator I'm telling

The 600 is sitting in garage collecting dust right now. Just got a few goodies in the mail today and I'm still waiting on UPS. I still need to call Nallins for a head and a few other things. Once I have everything that I need I'll put it together. I'm going to stick with the stock primary ratio for right now.

Is the 600 a 2000 engine or a later model?

I don't know the answer either. The only vin I found on the engine says "RACE USE ONLY". As far as I know all Blast race engines come from the factory the same as all stock Blast engines.

Holy CARP!!!

The Blast Production numbers are WAY down. I'm sure a large part of it is a shift in production to make XB's but in April, May and June they only shipped 138 Blasts!

http://www.harley-davidson.com/CO/NEW/en/PressRelease_Date.asp?locale=en_US&bmLo cale=en_US&id_in=502&dspmm=7&dspyy=2003

I wonder if the market has reached the Blast saturation point! Or maybe they are going to slow production down because the 2005 Blast will be very different, and they don't want there to be old models lying around taking up space.

Hmmm... The 2004's were just announced, and I'm going to start 2005 rumors :)

James, if your reply to me was also asking about *MY 600 motor (Not Spooky's?), it's coming along just fine. I just got the crank back this week, and the machinist tried out an experiment with milling it without Crank/Rod dis-assembled. (In a nut shell, the crank had the rod secured in place and was then machined/turned on a turret lathe at slow speed) This process was the first time it was tried and although it didn't remove as much weight as possible. It was cheaper and turn around was quick. And *No, the crank couldn't be rebalanced in this fashion, but the ONLY material removed was from a whole 360 degrees around the flywheels. (Did I say this procedure was CHEAP ;)
And as for gearing, this may sound odd, but we are using the internals from yr 2000 model.
The shortblock and internals are together, and all should be buttoned up by this weekend.
I'm quite pleased with the progress and ease of assembly.

Fairwether,

I didn't realize that you were building a 600 motor too, but it sounds like you have a great project coming along.

Damn, all these 600cc Blasts cruising around is going to be great!

Will building the 600 motor decrease the life of these engines (at all/significantly)?

Just got a 2000 model that I'd kind of like to hop up a bit so my wife (who happens to be VERY short) will have a better handling/stronger bike that her current Suzuki Savage.

Gotta say, pretty fun bike so far!

Hi guys,

I'm usually banging around the XB boards, but my XB9r went into the shop last week. A friend let me borrow her Blast for a day. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

What a hoot! I had a great time riding the bike. It actually felt more relaxing to ride fast than the XB (where I tend to have a ride-to-the-edge mindset). Also, I expected power issues on the interstate, but the bike was just as happy at 80 as it was at 70. The bike was mostly comfortable (I think I was meant to lie across the tops of bikes). I wasn't used to having a bend at the elbows. Anyway, you guys know all of this about your bikes already, but I thought you'd like to know that I gained a real appreciation for what the Blast has to offer.

Thanks Charles - yup - even the stockers are a lot of fun to ride! My red is still basically stock and going to and from work on it always leaves me smiling when I get off her - lol.

Hugh - if the install is done properly the life of your Blast may even be longer! I've only got the 515cc kit on my black, however, I kept all the other parts fairly mild (cam is Pro series, rev. limmiter set at 7100rpm, etc.) and upgraded where I could (Nallins springs, valves, guides, & p&p for the head, better exhaust & intake, etc.) I figured I wanted bullet proof more than top end and I think I have a good combo. of both - IMHO - The dealer considered all the Nallin parts upgrades and had no problem telling me what I'm telling you - the bike may last a lifetime (he was quite proud of his work - his test ride was over 3 hrs. long;0) - and rightly so) - the bike is a great ride now! Even though I enjoy the red, I love riding the Black! Especially in cali's wine country! Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Charles,

Glad you enjoyed the Blast, thanks for sharing. I wish more people would go out and ride them, there would be more people owning them.

Personally, I think that every dealership should have a Blast or three for people to use as loaners while their bikes are in for service. They'd probably sell more Buells to Big Twin riders who cauldn't wipe the grin off their faces.

james,
thats what my dealer up here had been doing for awhile. ended up selling ALOT of blasts to big twin riders for their "around town" bike. its kinda funny, when i bought my blast it stayed on the showroom floor for a couple days (it was the only black one they had), i was there the day before delivery drooling all over my new bike again when this big ol' time biker came up to me and asked if it was mine, I said yes and started telling him about the bikes. before i left he had taken one out for a ride and bought it the second he got back from his test ride lol. it was kinda funny to see big biker guy (6'6"+ and probobly 300lbs) riding around on a bone stock blast. oh and when i had bought mine they hadn't even had it on the floor yet. they were taking it outa the crate when i went in hehe....man that was a long time ago lol....

So,according to my analysis the 2000 Blast has a better 1st to 2nd gear shift?(sorry, I had to ask,it just drives me crazy!).
and...Yeah, when you get off a 'big twin' & get on a Blast, you just cant stop smiling, It's just too much fun,it is a blast to ride!! GearheadErikO

Erik,

My bike (2000) has the same clunk and grind going in to 2nd gear as the 2001 and up. I do get a miss shift sometimes going from 1st to 2nd.

I'm still a little puzzled about my 2nd gear being 1.97, 2001 up are 1.85. In 2000 all Vtwin Buells went to the 1.85, 1999 earlier were 1.97.

My owners manual states that my bike has a 1.97, but there was an article in Battle2win that states all Blast have the 1.85. I posted a link to the site. Click on the link;1. click the top pull down menu and pick (articoli) 2. click Inizia Ricerce 3. click Modifica rapporti trasmissione. The site is in Italian but the article is in english. My owners manual could be wrong. I hope this will help explain what the difference between the two gears are. http://www.netboxtech.com/bcube/trasform/index.php#

I'll find out after I get the 600 together and running good. That means I'll be splitting the case to inspect a few gears.

Well, it looks like the new primary ratio for the 2004 bikes are the same as the previous. I guess the Buell website is a typo. Per Spidey, the part numbers are the same for the 2000-2003 sprockets and the 2004 sprocket.
