Well finally got to race Daytona this year, my first multi-regional event. I have never been on a track with such high banking. Raced Ultra Light Superbike and came in the back of the pack and it was an experience that I will never forget. This is the first track that I have been on and been able to have the Blast in 5th gear and bouncing off the rev limiter (7K) for a good distance. The infield was very nice but the best part of the whole track was the banking. I was riding mid way up the banking and had bigger bikes going around me up toward the top of the banking. Really a fast track with a great infield and a great way to start out the season.

EZ: Did great on the infield but on the banking the other bikes doing 130+ I was a distant last. LaFayette: Just yell, more than happy to have some help. Would not trade the experience for anything. I will be posting some pictures laster of more Buells and Mr Eric Buell himself. He was watching several of the races. |

Those are great pics, and I see Erik was dressed in jeans in case he had to do some pit-crewing - lol - yeah - just racing in Daytona would be a kick, I remember when they had just finished the new MC track there in the 80's and they where letting a lot of folks have a free go around on it - just sign the waver and bring your bike - lol - hell of a party in the infield. Ok, I have in my cross-hairs a 2003 Blast with 4k miles on it for 1500 bones. I am seriously eying it for racing. puting on some clipons, moving to rear sets, sliming the plastic down and getting some damn grippy rubber. Who is racing this lil beast? What pipes, air cleaner, setups are you using? PM me if this is not the right spot for race recipes. (it will be in orange if I have my way with the paints) |

You're definitely in the right spot! Read through the previous posts and pictures in this section, there is a lot there. What class you want to run in will dictate what you do to your Blast (which may be a non issue if you dont have any other competition). Pirelli is the current tire of choice. Air cleaner is stock, modified stock, Buell Pro Series, Buell Pro Series modified or ? The popular pipe seems to be the V & H, but anything with good ground clearance works. Rearsets are usually home made (custom fit)! Tuber race belly pans (required for oil retention in case of a 'breakage') can be modified for the Blast as well as making your own (cheaper). Fork brace is a must. As for the street, I think its better to get out on the track before spending a lot of money on mods that may be unnecessary, pointless, uncomfortable, over expensive, etc. More specific questions can be answered better after some Blast riding or track time. We are more than happy to help! Disclaimer: I'm not a racing expert but though observations of Blast racing through the efforts of others (and myself included) I'm willing to share what I've learned. I think you'll find most Blast (& Buell) racers are very helpful. |

Cityxslicker: Buellistic, Gearheaderiko , Ezblast are the ones to start with on how to modify your bike setup. Before you go there what series will be raced in and what mods are allowed ? Should get answers on those items before the wrenching starts. I keep forgetting but Swampy is a valued resource (Message edited by mmelvis on March 27, 2007) |

Longevity and drag racing rarely mix, however, you do have 2 things going for you - 1) your tranny is a twin tranny so it can take the abuse the motor gives it, the abuse you give it though will still be a question. 2) The Blast is HD's most durable product. first the bike should be striped of all non-essentials to reduce weight - rear sets and an after-market exhaust help tremendously in this. An intake such as I run, and an exhaust such as I run on my red would also help - the PMF, also the plug I run - since it is made for upper rpm riding as well would be a good suggestion. After that my question becomes - how much power money wise are you looking for? GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Well, I was thinking about powerwise and the best thing to do would buy the most power for the least amount of cash, then work in towards the smaller gains from there. I mean I can afford to replace blown gaskets or bent rods (if that were to ever happen lol) but I couldnt really afford a bottom end rebuild or something of that nature. And I'm not going out of my way to drag somewhere... yet. This year I have 2 events I want to do. But its only the beginning and besides I need to get a feel for the whole thing too. |

OK - Hi-comp piston and Total Seal rings, have a head shop do up your head with a 3 angle job and porting, Ti valves and add springs capable of 650 lift, heavy duty stepped valve guides, and heavy duty seals, then add the Red Shift dual profile 580/620 cam - a serious torque cam - that should make you pretty quick with a good exhaust, plug, intake and jetting - a Dial-a-Jet such as I have would also be useful. Revolution sells the piston, and could probably sell you the rest as well. Find or adapt an SE/Crane ignition as well to bring your rpms up to 8000rpms - lol GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Well, I did some math on that, if I fab my own rearsets or come across a REALLY good deal on them it'll be in my budget. Oh my, the months to come. Edit: no way am I pushing the motor to 8000rpm. Thats scary for a thumper. (Message edited by drfeelgood on March 27, 2007) |

A steering damper idea: Saw a bunch of Hyabusa steering dampers on That Auction Site for $15- > 25 plus shipping so I got one to fool around with. Managed to put it > on the blast with very little problems. The ball joint on the end of > the shaft attaches to the bottom triple clamp and the swivel on the > side of the body attaches to the front engine brace. Spacing is > critical as the ball joint head is a little big but centering it > between the fork and steering head stop works perfectly. You need to > add 3 flat washers to shim it down to clear the lips on the bottom of > the triple clamp. On the other end I used two of those 1/4" brass > ferrels that you get for copper tubing when you put in a new kitchen > faucet. Photos are in the albums under BlastBusaDamper. Bolts are > metric but a bit works on the triple clamp if you drill it from a > couple of different directions. Actual size would be 13/32". The > bolts for body swivel can be a Grade8 1/4" with LOCK NUTS ON BOTH > ATTACHMENT POINTS! > > Works like a charm with only about 1/2" loss of lock-to-lock steering > radius on each side. You might be able to eliminate this by > adjusting the shaft to it's longest length which I didn't think to do > until it was all mounted. > > The bike now has a 'big bike' feel, all of the twitchyness is gone > with a more fluid feel, kinda like the difference between water and > liquid soap. Smooth. Also, all of the head shake at 80mph+ is > totally gone. I couldn't even get it to shake on purpose by yanking > the bars back and forth at 90. > > Ps. the wind screen is the one JCWhitney sells... ORRECTION ON BOLT SIZE: The bolt holding the body of the damper to the engine brace was an 8mm grade 8 bolt 2" long with a locknut. Actually, it is about 5/16" in diameter... Drill the 5/16" hole in the front motor brace centered on where the horizontal t's into the vertical, through the front face. then screw out the damper shaft from the ball joint about 1/2". Oh, one other thing, railroad tracks become mirages...it's like they are just painted on the road. Thanks, I have been trying to find a damper since I got the bike a year and a half ago. ProFlo didn't even answer my calls. Can't beat the price: Damper $27 on ebay, nuts and washers $2 total time: 2 hours, including running down to Ace Hardware. By: WW - William Wiegman @BBYG

Doesnt look like its adjustable, but for $25, I'd take it! Fitment in the usual place, but looks like a honking big damper. A very nice find though. EZ any chance you can credit the original poster? (bc129?) Done. (Message edited by ezblast on April 22, 2007) |
