Gearhead is right, but it only applies to '00 model cams. '01 and later use high contact ratio one-size-fits-all. An '00 is high contact ratio between the pinion and the intake drive gear, but not between the intake and exhaust gears. A Blast only has 3 sizes of each, though, a sporty has 7.

Most any XL cam is adaptable to the Blast. In fact, they come from the factory with XL1200S cams and there are two sets of alignment marks on the drive gear, one set for installation in an XL and another set for installation in an XB or Blast. When putting in bigger XL cams, you run into problems with the lobe hitting the pinion race if the base circle is stock and the lobe has more than about .530 of lift. But it's fairly easy to radius off the edge of the lobe 1/8" or so. The XB has the same issue. XB cams are .550 lift but they have a smaller base circle than XL cams so they clear nicely.

I've got XB cams in my Blast at the moment. They need a custom timing rotor, for some reason HD decided to put the XB's timing rotor keyway in a whole different place from the XL cams. Good lobe, gentle on the valvetrain. Not enough overlap for the big power, though. Most power I've made so far has come with N9's, 66 degrees of overlap in them babies. They also have a small base circle so they slap right in.

So - if I where to give up a bit on the overlap though there would be an increase in torque? - though I loose a few ponies? What xl cam would fit that profile? Just full of questions today - thinking about the new Blast - you stated that the 550 could be run well with better springs -anything else in a Blast need changing out also?I think thats it on the 's

Well, overlap connects the intake and exhaust together, and as such, it makes the motor much more sensitive to it's exhaust system. If the exhaust system pulls down low, more overlap can actually give you more bottom end power, but usually exhausts don't get much inertia scavenging effect at low rpm so high overlap cams are generally ground with a fairly late intake close point. Remember, intake close is the most influential event by far.

For all around street use I'd say B70's or XB cams are both probably good choices. Both need new springs and would benefit greatly from good port work and more compression as well. Them B50's (SE bolt-ins) are awfully mild, I can't imagine they do much for a motor.

So the XB would be the cam of choice! you said what kind of modification would you have to make to the cam - and valve piston clearence would be ok in a blast - would longer pushrods be needed? Could the Blast timing rotor be modified to be used with the XB cam?

The XB cams have about a .050 smaller base circle than the Blast cams, and that's enough that they'll go in the Blast motor without having to radius the intake lobe, not a problem. .050 smaller base circle means technically you should get a pushrod that's .025 longer, but remember, your stock lifters have about .200 of travel and the stock pushrods are sized to put the lifter in about the middle of it's travel within some tolerance. So assuming the head otherwise stays at the same height, you're .075 from topping out the lifter (roughly) if you just slap in the XB cams and use your stock pushrods, which is fine. None times out of 10 though people shorten the stack at least some to improve the squish and that of course sends it the other way. If you shorten things exactly .025, you're back at centered.

There's a bit of a problem with shortening a Blast to improve squish, though. The Blast uses a 15 degree Thunderstorm piston and a 10 degree Lightning chamber. So there's a mismatch. Not a big deal at the factory's typical .055 or so squish, but run it down and you create a problem. Worse, the mismatch is in the wrong direction, creating a fuel trap at the o.d. You can get a 10 degree piston (we sell one) or you can cut the chamber 15 degrees (we can do that, too).

On the timing cup, what I did was just cut a second window into my stock Blast timing cup, in the appropriate place for the XB cams. I now get one pulse per crank revolution, instead of one pulse every other revolution, but that works for me since I have a tach made for a twin. I do have to run the ignition in twin mode though, which means I have no tps or electric choke. A person could fill in the other slot, wouldn't be hard to do.

Thanks Aaron for the cam lowdown, Now know whats instore for my second Blast! That information is priceless! I'd be filling in the other slot! - lol - That helps a lot in the planning for the second Blast - I'm sure everyone else is paying attention to what you just said also! One last question - how many ponies you get out of that street 600cc Blast you were working on? - just looking for a round about # nothing tight is nescessary that way protecting owner confidentiality - Again thank you!

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This was the 63rd year of having a rally there. I hung out with some of the guys from Zippers. Try keeping up with a not so stock looking S2 that tach out at 8000 rpms. We talked about what all they have done with the Blast. So far the biggest they have done is a 600cc Blast that is making full power at 8 grand . I then told them there where a few 720cc Blast running around and their jaws hit the ground. I have been invited up to their shop to get the full tour and I might get a few goodies while I'm there. I've will have some pic's as soon as I get the film developt.

Hey all,

Just got back from a visit with Aaron. The new shop for Nallin Racing Heads is totally cool. The hospitality of the Wilson's and the Nallin's is unparelleled. It is just too cool to see these kind of sites out the back door.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Or to be this high in the nose bleed seats.

GPS

After watching (and helping a little with my meager abilities) Aaron, Brian, and the whole gang at Nallin Racing work for a couple of days, I found a new respect for customer service. These folks put their heart and soul into what they do. I want to tell you that getting a bike dyno tuned is not the simple process of putting it on the dyno and taking a couple of pulls. It requires most times, several pulls, lots of knowledge, a pinch of art, and a damn big pile of hard work. These guys truly try to get everything out of the engines they build.

Aaron was able to get 44-45 RWHP out of my Blast, and is currently working on improving that. I hope to post a dyno sheet soon after he and Brian gets done. Sorry, I won't post the details of what's in there yet and probably not for awhile. I will say that if someone is interested and wants to spend the money the folks at NRHS can fix you right up, but the set-up I'm getting may not be the best for street usage.

Geez Ray,

Why the big secret? We've already seen 50RWHP out of the Nallin Racing 515cc kit, have we not? Sorry, but when people overtly volunteer that they have secrets that they refuse to share, I get a little irked. Why announce it in the first place then? If someone asks, just say "I'd rather not say at this point".

How about this...

Hurricane piston 11:1 CR, N9 cams, Stage III XB Head, Roller Rockers, Hydrosolids, Mik HRS45, Racing Exhaust, SE Ignition.

Blake,

You might wan't to also check the class I will be running. Big Bore kit? I think not. Also I'm trying to share as much information as I feel I can. In fact, if someone wants to go through the archives I've shared more than I probably should have. Aaron and I had a fairly long conversation about this very subject. I have invested alot of time and money in this project and nasty surprises like Aaron had last year do not set well with me.

I apologise for the secrecy, but the end product (a couple of records)is very important not only to me but to my sponsors. Your guesses are somewhat correct. Yes I have roller rockers, and hydrosolid lifters. Otherwise there are several one off parts. Is it fair to my sponsors and me to be completely open? No we have lots of time invested. If you feel this is not fair to you please let me know and I'll quit posting any information and find another avenue to get what information I feel I can divulge to those that do want that what I can give out.

Hope you can understand my position, if not, all I can say is I'm sorry.

Ray

I give not two figs about any of your twin competition - last I checked this was the Blast Forum and Ray is just being cautious - can't blame him - there are some ideas that remain secret just for the edge or because it wouldn't be a wise general practice - alot of track stuff is like that - and you know that - go buy a Blast then come on back and talk - lol - in a way just kidding - on the other half quiet serious;0)

Ray,

Whoa man. The secrecy is your call 100%. I was admittedly being very pissy/bitchy. You are right to tell me to bugger off. I've learned that I shouldn't read Dyna's postings and then come here in a foul mood and bitch at you. You might consider in the future though that if you truly have secrets that you want to keep, announcing that you have them might not be the best thing to do, no?

Good luck. I'm sure you will do well and achieve great success. I for one am VERY interested in the Blast and any efforts to race or augment the performance of one. Go Team Elves! I guess you will be the chief Thumper Elf?

Blake,

Thank You,your apology is well taken and accepted. I agree that the safe bet would be to say nothing, but the support I get especially from this part of the BadWeb makes me feel somewhat obligated. This creates a very precarious position for me. I'm not by nature a secretive person, in fact, what do you want to know about me I'll probably post it. It terms of the LSR / Team Elves project I feel that some secrets are appropriate to achieve our goals. It's a tough tight rope that we must walk sometimes though.

As for Dyna, have him take two Midol and call his doctor in the morning. He takes the small shit way too serious.

It looks like you had a great time.

Well, my Blast just pulled a Norm Hardy and had its mirror fatigue off at 10300 miles. I’ll just have the dealer cover it as warrantee work. I’ll post some pics for all to see tomorrow.
If I could stop riding it for a while, I might actually sit down and design some rearsets for it, I love this little bike.

hey ed found a 500cc big bore kit for the aermacchi but figured i wouldn't go there wouldn't wanna compete with my fellow blasters lol. the 250cc once done should hit around the same speed as a stock blast 95-100mph not bad for a 250cc single. god i wish my parts would get here faster lol.

I don't know - a 500cc Aermacchi would really be cool! - and kick butt! James - you've probably got one of those good dealers - my rebuild was done by one, however my dailly experience with the local DP is still very tepid - just when you think these guys are getting their shit together they seem to strive to prove otherwise. I bought my second bike from them - told them to shine it up and make it look like new - as good as you can - wheels were still dirty and muffler unpainted - took it back said try again - this time wheels still dirty - took a rag with some brake cleaner and whiped a wheel and the stuff came right off - they didn't even try! - I don't know what to do with this bunch of clowns anymore - sometimes they come thru and sometimes you can hear the wind from their striking out! - ahhh well - if you got a dealer willing to do that then you've got a good one! Hell - I had to let mine know about the Buell sponsered BattleTrax! they were clueless! - Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ
