I may have an issue. I had my bike up on blocks while I finished my rearsets over the last few weeks (yes I said weeks- too cold to ride anyway)My bike is now a Blasuki ( I used gsxr parts). When I got home from the office, I noticed that my left fork had oil all over it. Should I be concerned. Is this something I need to have warranteed by the evil HD dealer, or is this a wait and see type thing?  | ||

That's definitely a warranty issue. Just check their work after you get your bike back. | ||

Thanks Joey-Since this seems to be a warranty issue, is it safe to ride, or am I playing with fire? It doesn't bottom out, could this have been a piece of dirt that got between the seal and the tube allowing oil to ooze? What does that mean check their work? What do I look for? | ||

EZ might be a better person to answer the safety issue, but I'd guess that uneven dampening would make the ride awkward at best. I don't think dirt can normally get up in there to cause trouble with the seal. Check their work. Make sure they tightened everything down properly. Check torque on all bolts that would be involved in the repair work. I've left the dealer with a loose exhaust and a gas tank cover that looked like a drunk monkey put it on. I would get it examined and fixed by the dealer. Sounds like a leaky fork seal. | ||

Thanks guys- I just hate to take it to the dealer, the drunk monkey analogy is right on the money. Does this problem just spontaneously occur? Is there anything I should do to prevent this again? Can I tighten something to stop the leak on my own? My local HD shop is evil corporate beurocratic America at its finest.  | ||

A good thing to do to keep your fork seals healthy is, when you stop for gas, wipe the bug guts off the fork tubes. | ||

There is a trick involving 35mm film - slip it in past the lower fork seal and slowly bring it back up in a circular manner going around the full fork leg slowly - wipe off excess and repeat about 3 times or no more dirt appears - and see if the seal will reseal - read about it in the quickboard - do a search there or the regular KV for suporting reading - my black bike did that for a little bit and stopped when the dirt worked itself out - lol GT - JBOTDS! If that helps me to avoid the gates of hell then I will try the film thing, even I can handle that with relative ease. Since I wiped off the fork, nothing seems to be oozing out. Will the leak only appear during riding, or will it continue to seep out while sitting? | ||

It will only come out when you are riding. I had it so bad on the Sportster one time that my pant leg got all oily, I first thought it was an engine leak. | ||

Thanks Swampy. Just peachy, that annoys me. Oh Well. Fix it move on. Hey Ez, I was on the flyncycle site and looked at their fairings. Was it a major PITA to make them work. Second question, are these sturdy enough to mount firebolt style mirrors on? 3rd- must I be an electrician to wire these beasts into my current wiring harness? | ||

Well, it can leak when standing still, but not near as much when riding. When the fork oil level gets low enough the leaking will eventually stop! EZ's cleaning idea is excellent, Motoboss makes a similar device for cleaning dirt out of the fork seals. A shop rag zip tied around the fork leg/slider area will keep fork oil from getting everywhere. The electrical wiring should be easy and you could just bolt a Firebolt fairing up! | ||

Slick idea with the rag, I will look into the motoboss thing today. It annoys me that something seemingly miniscule could be such a pain. As far as the fairing, I have bid on some on ebay, and the prices have gotten out of hand while bidding so I backed off. If your superstitious, aren't parts from a down bike covered in the evil road gremlins? | ||
