We filled two public parking lots waiting for the sac group to show and when they did we stood over 600 strong and headed to Golden Gate Park for BBQ, refreshments and a stunt show - almost all impromptu - yup even the stunt show - I was standing about 5 feet from the guy when he was calling his buddy to drag his gig to the park for a little free publicity and show suport for a popular cause - at the other end of the city. It all just snowballed with various clubs and rides changing their end destination to coinside.

Wish there had been more Buellers there - still my bike was considered the loudest of the non - Harley - cruisers - tear of pride - and Joe's Black xb9s also looked sharp - both drawing their fair share of bike questions. One of the blockers on the ride was a V-rod - lol - Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Sorry guys - the reason the s looks like an a is because of font sizing - if your a fast reader - I'm one - then you probably have it set for smallest acceptable print which distorts the s into looking like an a - perhaps if we went to one size bigger font - I'll hint about it - so what kind of riding got done this weekend? My event was pretty self evedent from past posts - But surely I wasn't the only one riding? ;0)

Great to see a thumper site.

-Blast. I think that the blast could have some possibilities. A flattrack version would be cool. New frame, etc.

-HD Sprint. I love these bikes...Let's see some photos of them.....Anyone have one for sale?

-Other singles. I have a Honda FT 500 Ascot, and love it....

Here are a few questions for some of you.

What kind of mileage are you getting in the city, stop and go traffic, what avg speed?

I went on one ride for 60 miles then rode around the base here in 15-30 mph stop and go and only got 92 miles on a full tank, before switching to reserve, am I being paranoid or does this sound normal?

If that doesn't sound normal, anyone got any ideas? Stock Blast, no mods to engine, carb, nothing that would affect performance.

Yup - sounds about right for stop and go in city traffic riding - 45 to 50 miles / gal. Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

How many miles do you have on that P3 there Southernmarine? The gas mileage improved for me after about 2000 miles were on it. Under normal driving (for me this includes around town and some highway speeds) I am getting 69mpg and usually go around 140miles before looking for fuel. When I first got the bike the gas mileage was a lot lower. Traveling at 85mph up to Americade last year I ran out of gas at 92miles (good thing it has reserve :-) I'm interested to see what kind of mileage I get this year heading up there. -chuck

It's new, I've got about 600 or so. I'd have to run outside to check it. Still breaking it in. :(
Had to ask though.

I've got about 1000 miles on mine and I'm getting around 65MPG. That's around town for the most part, with some rural cruising.

I've noticed that I get lower gas mileage when riding in cooler weather. In early spring/late fall I get around 90-100mi per tank before reserve. In the summer I tend to get around 120.

Aaron,
Thanks for the TACH tip. The tach works and the engine doesn't seem to run any different. I haven't had it on the dyno yet so I don't know if the power changed.

Thanks

Is the adjustable ignition system new? I don't recall seeing it before, but I could have just missed it.

Now what we need is for Buell to release a better air intake. I've heard a rumor that it's coming. Anyone here close to those that know have any light to shed on this?

The March 29, 2003 archives contains a post of a pic of Merriman's Blast with a Force Bolted on - the trick is Carb bracing - everyone has different - thats why I want to see the factory's new hi-po intake to see their mounting points for the braces and maybe adapt them for myself if they are feasable. The Force just bolts on though there is some preliminary mod.s that should be done to it for it to work well - the pics of this mod are in the kv - I'll post one tonite in our carb section. Aaron, I assume you are referring to the adjustable ignition? Surely the intake hasn't been out for a year. We couldn't have all missed it.

I was referring to the ignition.

There's a big need for a good air cleaner solution. The stock box is incredibly restrictive, at least on the dyno.

Aaron - funny though - if you do the K&N filter, rerout the breathers, & modify the air box - you must be getting close to real good breathing - because I had that set up and when I switched to the torque stack - I over jetted thinking there would be a big difference - but there wasn't (put old jet back in) - at least in that catagory - my torque curve is a different thing all together;0) yuppers - Got Thump?! Yuppers! I've always believed the old addage - Harley's and Buell's run on torque not horsepower! Thats why from the very beginning I was looking for max. consistent torque over the usual h.p. chase - though h.p. is always nice;0) - Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Gas Milage: over the last 8800 miles, I've used 154 gallons of gas for 57 mpg. I usuallg go 100 miles before I hit reserve. My bike is still bone stock except for a timing cover and bars.

EZ,

You don't get good torque without HP... HP=Torque*RPM/5252

It's just that torque is a direct indicator of the breathing efficiency of your engine, so it's an easy/simple diagnostic parameter to use to help optimize engine performance. Peak torque means peak efficiency. Keeping the torque from dropping off at high RPM yields higher peak HP. When the torque drops, something in the engine breathing system is constraining it. Could be intake, could be carburetor, could be head, could be cams and/or exhaust tract.

So true, however what I wanted to do was bring the top of my torque on a little further up the rpm area 3 to 3.5 g and then level a bit befor any dropage and keep that to as little as possible. So I've tried to keep myself aimed at promoting torque - free breathing and power in promotion of torque. I've seen alot of dynos where torque was actually sacrificed at the expense of more horsepower - I just didn't want to go there - so instead of asking which pipe produced more usable horsepower I substituted torque into the question and found that the Bub answered my needs( 1 3/4" header). I cheated using everyone elses dynos in my research. ;0) Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

I'm not quite following you. I think you mean that you saw " dynos where mid-range torque was sacrificed for more HP"? You raise torque, you raise HP.
