Anybody get price quotes from the dealer only to have the price you pay be roughly half of what the quote was? I'm not complaining, mind you. Just wondering if my dealer is trying to make me happy or something.

The jets are in! $12.08, including shipping. Sure beats that $80+ kit. I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend out in the 30 degree weather! I'll be in the carburetor section, reading.

Good Morning Buellers,
A couple of questions for you all.
Took the anchor of my bike last night. To my surprise there was no exhaust gasket, as pictured in my 2002 manual. Instead I found a flange molded to the exhaust pipe, retaining ring and clamp. Is this normal, or did someone forget a gasket? Second question regarding the float bowl on the carb, any ideas on how to free the four bottom bolts without stripping them? Thirdly, the 2002 manual lists the large jet as a 166 and the small jet as a 42. Should I change the jets to a 170 and a 45 to go with my V&H exhaust? Thanks to all...

I removed my anchor, and there were remnants of a gasket...

When removing the screws, have a new screwdriver (or bit) that is the correct size. Hold it as straight as possible, and using your other hand to push down at the same time, push up with the screwdriver with as much force as you can, then turn. After you mess up the screws, if they are one of the more accessible, you can take a Dremel (or similar) tool with a very thin disk and cut a straight slot. When you're doing this, do one side of the slot at a time, tilting the tool in such a way that the screw will touch the screwdriver closer to the crown first. In this illustration, note that as you are cutting the notch, you work on one side of the screw, i.e., the side close to you, and cut it to the left as you go up. When you do the other sice, you'll cut to the right. That way, the screwdriver will not be tempted to scoot out, as it did in the first place. Be careful not to cut your carburetor up into too many pieces while you're doing this. Remarkably realistic image to follow.

Gansett,

If you have a small pair of vise grips you can usually get them clamped on around the head of the screw. The screw will generally come loose pretty easily that way. I haven't done my blast carb, but I have done this on many others. Then replace those phillips head screws with allen heads for next time.

Gansett, if the "moulded on flange" prys off the cylinder head and upon inspection looks like a circle of stranded wire, then that is the gasket and needs to be replaced when putting on the new exhaust header. Jim.

It's a photograph of what I was doing, developed from my imagination by my nimble fingers and Paint Shop Pro. I guess I could have put a more realistic taper on the screwdriver blade. I destroyed 2 screws, but didn't have to take the carburetor off! I'll be getting good screws, of course, before I put it all back together tomorrow. The dealer sent me the wrong main jet. It was more than twice the diameter of the correct jet.

The guy who made my new exhaust noticed the remnants of a gasket, and told me he things he can get it to seal without a new gasket. He was successful, but I'll get a new one anyway, and reconnect it. No HOG ever sounded like this!

Thanks for all the helpful hints.
I tried to pry the flange from the exhaust no luck. When looking at the header where the exhaust connects it appears to be metal to metal wear. Not very nice

Gansett, the gasket is probably still in the head. The metal to metal wear that you see is actually the gasket. The gasket is more like a doughnut of stranded wire. The head should have a counterbore with sharp edges. You can just pry the old gasket out.

Hey Gang,

Well my baby went in for surgery today to have the 515 kit and Nallin head installed. Funny, it did not want to start at all and the clutch was frozen. I know it's probably the 15 degree weather we're having but it was like she didn't want to go. Guess I'm a little nervous about the outcome. Any tips on what to check when it's all said and done to make sure there aren't any dealer goofs? What carbueration changes have any of you other guys/gals have to make after the 515 install?

Well, my head gasket started leaking this past sunday, and since it's still under warantee and I don't feel like spending the $50 for a top end gasket kit, my Blast is at my local dealer. I figure that they can screw it up fix it as good as I can. Hopefully I’ll have my bike back today.

I only have 6000 miles on the bike, and I let it warm up before hitting it hard, I wonder what the cause could be.

James,

If you are talking about the leak from the rocker box which cause the head and cylinder to be bathed in oil, then it's not a head gasket but a rocker box gasket. This is a common problem and easily fixed. They have come out with a much improved gasket that pretty well cures the problem. It's a wonder that you hadn't had the problem sooner than 6000 miles. It takes me about 2 hours to change one out so not a biggy.

Ray, It's a head gasket, front and center, right below the exhaust port. The rockerbox is still oil tight. I know, it's a miracle that the rockerbox hasn't started leaking, but the 2002 gaskets must be improved :). My bike won't be ready until tomorrow now :(. Damn warantee work, it always gets pushed to the bottom of the pile.

Saro, I'm also having the dealer look at (change out) my charcoal cannister and rollover valve. I'll let you know it that solves the tank breather problems I'm (we're) having. It must be a California thing related to moisture in the charcoal cannister.

James-

I put a VERY low mileage can on the Blast and it still had the problem. Again, disconnecting the tank vent hose AT THE CARCOAL CANNISTER cured the problem - which means it's not a kinked or obstructed hose.

I still gotta test the PCV to see if that's somehow contributing. That's why I spent the couple of bucks on the new one on Saturday.

I'll keep ya posted...

That's why the jets were so cheap! Turns out the $1.99 main was for a different carburetor! The correct one was $6.75. Now she's running like she ought to! Except, she is giving me a hard time about idling again. Intermittent--seems to clear up if I let her sit still for a few minutes, running or not. I'll be getting my WD-40 to check for leaks tonight.

Wondering if I should get ear plugs...

Check out the BWB* Lubrication section and then put synthetic into your Blasts, now.

Seems Harley has "endorsed" synthetic oil. Finally.

* preferred by Buell riders worldwide. :]

What is the secret on the transmission? How does one check the trans oil level? How does one refill? And... what is the recommended lubricant? I just bought 2 used Blasts and want to do a little house cleaning on them before the snow melts. Thanks.

Fssnoc2501, I'd like to do the same job that you did mounting the K&N filter. Where can I get the 3/4" spacer from Kurylyn? I can't find any reference to it. Or if anyone else knows how to mount the 2" pvc pipe onto the carb please let me know. Thanks, Jim.

Are the top end gaskets the same for the Sportster/Buell 1200, the XB9 and the Blast?

No secret. You have to open the cover on the clutch plate. With the bike level, the fluid should cover the teeth on the bottom of the clutch assembly, but not much more. I'd recommend you don't pull the foot-peg bar off. Just loosen the nuts most of the way. A few choice words might help. To change it, pull the plug underneath. If you're lucky, the muffler won't be in the way. I personall use Mobil 1 75W90 synthetic gear oil. You poor it in the opening where you looked to see the lubricant level. Somewhere, someone covered this in more detail, but I can't remember where or when. Probably right here, if you go back far enough.
