Dirt/Flattrack racing is a dying sport. Harley has ONLY kept in it because of the history behind the XR750 and it's long dominance. The 883 series also promotes Those bikes and the Blast was thrown in for fun. Most of it's(Blast) heritage comes from experience with the other two bike classes. One side note of importance. Although the Blast motor can be built-up to produce some serious H.P., it has one MAJOR disadvantage...is it's Weight !!!!! In head to head competition, the Blast will always LOSE! Only THIS year did Rich King make a podium finish with the Blast Flattracker. They usually have a choice to run either the H-D Rotax or the Blast and the Rotax is faster. BTW-even the Rotax motor is also very heavy compared to the NEW Jap- CRf450,DRz400 and YZ426 ! And those bikes are making so much MORE power this year...that anything else is just slow ! The Blast with Jen Snyder aboard was just a marketing tool...and I love them Both ! But lets get serious..... The Blast engine is just too heavy to ever be a serious Racer ! P.S.- it also looks like the Rotax racer won't be able to compete in F-USA in 2003 unless they run it bolted to the H-D MT500/350 Military Frame ! The same holds true for all other Rotax racers.....Anybody know where you can find some old Can-Am "Sonic" frames !? Flattrack was an old love of mine, but the sport of late is going thru it's death throws without much spectator support or prize money, especially for the risk involved. More Flattrack racers died or where mamed last year(and this yr) than in all American & International Road Racing combined ! I'm looking into Road Racing lately...it's far safer these days. And they have classes for the Blast that make it equal with the others..... |

Chaser, I have the kerker pipe on my wife's 2002 blast. The dealer installed it before we took the bike home. We did not change the air filter or re-jet the carb. The bike runs great. It is pretty loud. When I ride close behind her on my firebolt, I can hardly hear the firebolt exhaust. The kerker pipe, while not the best looking one, is very well built. |

I don't think installing an aftermarket pipe, filter or jet kit will void your warranty - I did it, and they still honored my warranty. All I know is that those are some of the easiest modifications you can do to the Blast, and it isn't necessary to pay some tech $50/hour to install all that stuff. It took me about 2 hours to do it all on my own. And there's nothing wrong with the V&H SSR-2, it's a decent pipe and I've been running it for about 5 months now - every pipe is different, so it comes down to personal preference (sound, performance, etc...) |

Littleone, I'm also a newbie with the Blast. I grew up riding Honda XL's, and have yet to get used to the transmission on the little Buell. It makes me cringe every time I shift, but from what I've read on this board and elsewhere, that's just part of the charm(?) of the bike. One thing I've found that helps when shifting from neutral to first is to rev it up and then let off on the throttle; shift into first as the rpms are coming down. That seems to work sometimes; other times it doesn't. |

Might want to try pulling the clutch, then counting to 5 before you drop it down into first. Always worked for me, but I don't always have the patience to count to 5. David |

Count to 3, blip the throttle, and slowly press the shifter into 1st. Your timing will soon be such that you will rarely crunch a shift. Don't be in a hurry to shift when underway; remember that the Blast is more about relaxed riding than fast riding (although a bunch of us Blastards often forget that ). For fast, try the new Lightning. I'm still thinking about my test ride last weekend... |

Switching to Mobil 1 synth gear oil really helps, my only stress used to be the first down shift into first in the morn - but I've got it to an art now one solid klunk and the rest of the day is just klik klick klick. Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

That clunking noise means it's working. That's just the Blast for you - if it isn't thumping, grinding, squealing, clunking or anything else, then there must be something wrong. God, I love this bike!!! |

Prof, Still getting the bike back into running condition, but the assessment thus far is that for my "Gravity Challenged" behind the Corbin is going to be the cat's meow. I used that little 'L' bracket that you sent with the seat. Also thank you "that little extra" that you sent along. Shawn, The fabrication isn't all that hard as I only use pretty much common handtools. What it takes is time which is of a premium most of the time around my house. So at least right now I'm not ready to go into production. If you want to know details feel free to ping me. EZ, I'm looking at the XRTT Fairing from Air-Tech. According to Aaron this was the predecessor to the RR fairing and had considerable air tunnel testing when developed. It will take quite abit of modification and fabrication of mounts, but geeez I'm getting used to that with the sidecar and all. Littleone, A portion of that transmission noise is just the charm of the Blast. The suggestions posted above are good try them all until you find the one that works for you. The hardest shift of the day in my experience is the first one. The transmission smooths out the more miles that you put on it, and the the use of Mobil 1 gear lube. Ray |

Littleone, I too have a 2002 Blast and have the same loud clunking going from neutral to first. So much so, that a guy riding a Harley told me I needed to take the bike in to have them adjust the clutch. It's been doing it since I started riding (first time ever) this past spring and I've now got over 4000 miles on it, and I have gotten used to it and it doesn't appear to be a bad thing other than the sound. So I'm really glad to see these posts, and to know it's not a problem with my bike !!! Thanks all for the tips. And I am interested in looking at the new Lightning, because now that I'm used to riding I want more power !! But I'm afraid that it may be too much bike for me to handle !? CJM |

CJM: No, the Lightning would not be too much bike for you to handle. The power delivery is predictable. The weight is not much more than the Blast's. But the Blast is a whole lot of fun just as it is. Don't sell that 28hp short. Last summer I did 1400 mi in 5 days on it and loved it. It has to be Harley's most reliable bike to date. |

Really - with the right choice of aftermarket(to personalize her to fit)the Blast becomes a hard bike to beat. I get day in and day out(knock on wood;0))reliable fun transportation from my Blast and she has only grown smoother in operation. Gearing up for that trip to Redding to visit sis - should be fun - mapping out some back roads - just survived wife's birthday - lol - Bike weighs in at 323lbs(using an old pallet scale) - up a few from switching back over to the stock lighting and alum. clip-on bars. Will probably have her back to her old evil self after Christmas, now time is tight and I want to enjoy what free time I get - riding(not wrenching-lol). Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

I had a FANTASTIC ride on my Blast this weekend. Went through the trouble of fitting the Crossroads bars back on 'cause I'd set the bike up for Loli. Rode the 33 from Ojai to the 166 and headed west over towards SLO on Saturday. Not a single LEO! The 33 is a GREAT road. It's a fantastic bunch of twisties in Ventura county. Once you enter Santa Barbara county it turns into a bunch of straights with an occasional kink. The twisties were great on the Blast. It's been SOOOO long since I've had a good ride on that thing. Turn west on the 166, stop at Mobil station in New Cuyama, top off with $2 / gal low test (We're out of premium, sir.) and enjoy what was quite possibly the finest peanut butter on whole wheat sandwich I could have packed for myself. The rest of the way to the 101 was fun. It did make me want for more power. The Blast couldn't go fast enough on some of those sweepers. Glorious things. Some very consistent turn radii and WFO - and I REALLY wanted more go. Oh, well. Funny thing is that I met up with a guy who rides - Loli's business partner. He can't STAND the fact that I'd rather ride the little Blast instead of the FXD. I think he wanted to go for a ride but decided against it when he realized I was on the wimp cycle. That was Saturday. On Sunday I was retruning home. I decided on the same route. I also needed a rear tire. It was frustrating trying to find one AND a place to put it on. What was MORE frustrating was the fact the my mirrors (really the right one) refused to stay screwed in! I had to make numerous stops until I finally broke down and bought a $.99 freakin' adjustable wrench that cost me upwards of $5. Interesting note... BOTH mirrors have LEFT hand threads. That makes sense for the left mirror since the wind will always try to tighten it. The right one? HA! I wound up stuffing the thing in my jacket at one point! Hey, look, my backback's about to tear itself a new one. Stop at Wall Mart (near Five Cities Drive) and buy one $15 backpack. That was almost the end of the frustration. Stopped by at Santa Maria HD / Buell (west of the 101 on Main Street) and asked about a Blast rear tire. Wouldn't have meant much even if they DID stock one 'cause their service department was closed. I knew that Santa Barbara's service department was closed - and it would be out of my way if I wanted to take the 33 again. Screw it. Took the 166 east. Had to row past some annoying traffic. 1st CHP going the other way as I'm leaned, uh, NOTICEABLY into a medium speed sweeper. He sees an overgrown guy on a diminutive bike that sounds like some giant space hornet or something. He stared at me as we crossed. Didn't bother coming for me. Cool. Kept right on going. Passed a second CHP going the other way. I don't think he noticed me at all! Long left hand sweep soming up and I see a parked CHP just waiting. Eased up. Passed him. Kept going. Stopped at the same Mobil station that still had no Super. Filled up. Bought a Whatchamacallit. Then I tried to get home as quick as I could. Got home, rigged up some stupid contraption utilizing an engine stand and a 1000lb ratcheting cargo strap and jacked up the Blast. Yanked off the wheel and ran it down to Glendale. Too busy to help me that day, but I figured on that. It was 3:30 and their minimal Sunday service crew got off at 4. Never mind. The riding was all good! The thing that bugged me most about all this is looking at my mis-used rear tire. I realized about all I'd done on my poor little Blast was commute. The center was worn all the way down. Although the tire had clearly spent SOME time turning, it really is a shame. Gotta do something about that... -Saro |

Two Questions 1. What is the best way to add a Tachometer to the P3? 2. Who sells a headlight conversion (looks the same but can use a PIAA style bulb) for the P3? Thanks |

Josh, I don't know about the headlight, but currently I'm using a Daytona Digital tach from Lockhart Phillips. It is programmable and inductive. Program number of cylinders = 1, Wrap wire around plug wire. Hook up a ground and hot wire and you are ready to go. It even has a clock, nice when working on the bike around dinner time. Ray |

I finnaly got a chance to ride my little Blastard yesterday. For those that aren't aware I was attempting to set the 500cc sidecar record when the rains came down on Bonneville and have spent the last month trying to get it streetable again. Just got in my Mikuni carb which worked very well much more responsive than the CV. The Corbin seat was very comfortable especially for my gravity challenged behind. The comfort level should improve even more when I get my Banke rearsets. With the clip ons the stock pegs just don't quite make it. Ray |

Fssnoc2501 - your gonna love the rear-sets(besides the serious diet of lost weight)- makes carving corners much more stress free(not dragging pegs), and with that aereo skin your planning - I gather your really going for top speed;0) - sounds like fun to come. Hey blasters, I'm back! I sold my blast last fall and a couple of bikes later I figured it was the only bike that would do it for me, so I just got a great deal on a '02 with the Vance and Hines exhaust and jet kit. I'm really enjoying riding it and am not going to go mental about noises or weird occurances like I did with my '00. One thing though, has anyone tried to quiet down the V&H exhaust? I'm an older guy now and it's a bit over the top as far as loudness goes for me. I got the origional exhaust with the bike and am probably going to put it back on. If I could just quiet the V&H by 20% or so.... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Jim. |

Jim, Welcome back - you still in Philly? Something about the lil' ol' Blast just gets to you. I'm having a real hard time parting with mine since I bought the S2. Turned down one offer, was in the process of selling it to a riding buddy so I could still take it for a spin occasionally when he broke his hand and the deal fell through, and just gave a vague "maybe" to someone else when they asked if it was for sale. The V&H can be repacked, can't it? might be a way to quiet it down some going that route. Anyone have any suggestions? David |

On tires: I have the Avon, getting up to 2500 miles on it, and it looks like the Dunlop and Pirelli did at 1500 miles. Unless it suddenly starts wearing really fast, I'll make it WAY past the 3000~ mile mark. On miles: I'm past the 10,000 mile mark! It seems the transmission shifts more smoothly now. That's only partly because of the Mobil 1 Synth. The engine has also smoothed out. It seems to have done it about 1000 miles after changing the dinosaur juice out completely with Mobil 1 Synth. I'm hitting 80 all the time now. I've hit 90 a few times, but it seems I'm too much of a wind block to get much faster than that. Before, it seemed I was hurting the poor thing! Question of the Day: How does the Buell windshield compare to other fairings? I don't scrape my pegs very much, so rearsets aren't in my immediate future. I'll be sitting up straight for now. Can I get lots of opinions on this? |

Joey, My wife's blast has the buell windshield on it. I rode her bike this summer and found that the windsheild really blocked too much air for my taste in the hot weather. In the winter time though, it rocks. It keeps a lot of wind off of you. In comparison to my bikes, I would say the blast windsheild blocks way more than the windscreen of my XB9R. Again it also blocks way more than the fairing and windscreen on my Kawa Ex as well. I never rode her bike with the stock windscreen so, I can't give you a before and after comparison. |
