Rear Tire size question? Do any of you guys have any experience fitting a 130/80x16 rear tire to the stock Blast swingarm-without clearance problems ? I know that at least 2 manufacturers make this size and it's the OEM rear tire size for the Kawa 250 Ninja. Dunlop makes this size and so does my Fave tire Co. "Cheng Shen"- don't laugh. The Cheng Shin tire is their Barracuda "V" and is a V rated tire and not too pricey(cheaper than the Dunlop).Also- do any of you guys have first hand experience fitting a 120/90x16 tire on the back without clearance trouble ? Can you tell me what other tires/brands besides the "3" (Dun,Pir,Avo) also can fit the rear ??? Thanks in advance !

Hey Ralph you can fit the 130/80 but not the 120/90 - a height problem there. Jeramy and I are basically trading muflers his to abuse and mine to use - lol - however - from all of the tire discussion I've read - I do'nt think going to a larger size is going to significantly increase your contact patch because of rim width - however there are professionals who will add up to 1/2" to your rim width f&r, but then comes the swing arm - you can pay a welder to move the shock a little - (reinforcing with steel) and voilla - you can now run bigger tires(however - a 120/70 will barely fit the front rim with no mod.s - but again you don't really gain much on the contact patch because of rim width and you do have to worry about wheel deflection due to the wide tire on a narrow rim. here's a funny thing, the Ninja EX250 was designed to run on a 120/80 rear and only switched to a 130 because tire manufactureers ceased to make the tire. Along comes the Blast and they chose the 120/80 amd the guys who race/ride EX250's are estatic because now their bike can run the tire the bke was designed for and all us Blast people want to run the "Make do" tire the Nija has been using

Greetings! I've been reading posts for a couple weeks and decided it was time to say hi. So, hi. I'm preparing to purchase a Blast and would appreciate any advice on the subject. I'm currently leaning towards purchasing a used one, ('01 or '02), but may opt for a new '02 if the deals right. A dealer in town has an '01 with 1K miles for $3K. Another dealer nearby has some new '02's for $3750. Any advice on purchasing one would be greatly appreciated.

An '01 with 1K for $3K - that's a really good deal. Check to see if it's already had the 1K service done to it. There's really no difference between the '01 and '02 models - I know I opted for a used '01 with about the same number of miles and haven't had any problems with it yet.

So, about the only advice I have is to check whether or not it's had the 1K service on the used bike.

Welcome to the board....

If you are looking used, and from a dealer, see if they will put in the new metal style Rocker Box gasket (I think they were standard in '02 but don't quote me) They are not difficult to change, but kind of a pain if you are nor mechanically inclined. If they make a deal to sell a used bike, they may do this for you.

Other than that, pretty much just mahe sure maintenance has been done, and check it over as you would most any other bike....

J.P. and I have basicly agreed on exchanging Blast exhausts - mine for his usage and his dented for my ticket sign off - kind of a karmic wheel thing - lol - Welcome Pleer - You'll love the Blast! Its just too much fun - any way you go with it - just have fun!
I park my bike right in front of the giant picture window on the shops side where I can see it most the time just by turning my head and looking past my boss's white S-1. A couple of 'old schoolers' (the one guy rides a pan head ht) were looking the bike over and we started talking about the various things we've done to our bikes - they thought the Blast was a great idea for corner carving - light and nimble and modifiable - lol - and they gave me a few ideas on deco - lol again - she always gets the looks(even with a Ducati dealer down the block and an Aprilla/Muz/etc. dealer - they race singles - across the street).Blasting on the dark side! Hey Ed, thanks for that info on rear tires. I wasn't sure- but I hope YOU are as I wanna pick up a 130/80 rear tire. Yes I know the contact patch wouldn't increase, I just wanna have the visual effect of a slightly chubbier rear tire. I didn't think that a 120/90 would clear the front shock tab in the swingarm, but I also thought that my old group co-founders bought an IRC rear tire in 120/90 and put it on... but I never heard much from them after that and later we had a falling out, so no more contact.
But I'm going to buy a Cheng Shin 130/80x16 Barracuda "V" for the rear and maybe a 100/90x16 for the front. ~LOL~ But I just installed (last week) the Pirelli on the back and love the way it feels/handles.
BTW- the Cheng Shin "Barracuda-V(rated)" is a different tire altogether from their other Barracuda which doesn't offer the 130/80 size. And that one is "H" rated I believe.

Fellow Blastards,

Sorry about not setting any new records for us, but forgot provisions to make it amphibious. Wondering if any of you have a set of stock wye peg mount that you want to get rid of. I'm working on a set of homebuilt rearsets for next years attempt (I have to retain at least part of the stack wye for the sidecar mounts). Would like to come up with another set for R&D.

Thanks,

Ray

It's like a lawnmower, just remove the plug on top and invert.

Doesn't really matter since you have to open both tubes the oil one and the Vent hose to remove the gooey white stuff. Get a bucket or oilbox to catch the old oil use a pair of pliers to remove the plug clamps, pull the plugs and drain. I like to pour a half quart of fresh into the system to clean out the old oil. Then remove the oil filter. Screw on a new filter, plug the drain lines and add 2 quarts (only) to the oil tank and presto you are done.

both a dunlop 130/80, and some other brand I can't remember fit - I figure they can't be that different or why bother with a sizing standard - eh? But then again a dunlop 140/80 fit and the 140/80 avon didn't - and so the 1/4"mod to the swing arm ensued, then I didn't like their squirliness (though they looked cool), went to the pirellis and have'nt looked back. This is the Fram part number for our filter PH4967
Don't buy a fram from what I've heard their filters leave something to be desired however you can use it as a crossreference. this is the Wal-Mart Brand "SuperTech" filter part number which is the same filter as the Buell Blast filter, same manufacturer and all # ST4967 Also the Blast used the same spec filter and a Chevy Prism. K&N make a filter that works as well # is- 1003. Or so I have been told

Do a search for AmsOil in the Blast! topics. Somebody has the part number for the Amsoil part. Supposedly, it is a superior filter.

Oil Filters: I ventured into Wal-Mart for the first time today. Egads it's huge! After inspecting the Fram 4967 (definitely looked as bad as people are saying) I bought the Super Tech ST4967.

Then I motored to my HD/Buell dealership and asked to look at the Blast filter. Same exact internals, same stamp (AA) on the plate. Xgecko is correct once again. Must be the Navy food. :)

YES, the Wal-Mart Super Tech ST4967 IS THE EXACT SAME FILTER as what your Buell dealer sells. Price? $1.97 Dealer: $8.63

So, shall we support our Harley/Buell network and buy from them or shall we scamper to Wal-Mart and save $$ ?

Corbin Chronicles Continued:

Last week after doing 110 miles my rear was just tingling with sting-ging pain. The ill-fitting Corbin seat (Xgecko, how can I bend down the metal tab without snapping it off the rivet?) became just too uncomfortable. It's too firm for my 165 pounds (stock pegs and handlebars). If someone asked me to continue for 100 more miles I would have *#$^&% them.

So today I put the stock seat back on and rode basically the same route (120 miles - only 68 mpg this time). Quick photo of my favorite type of rode:

W Snoqualmie Valley Road

Anyway, I was MUCH less sore and could have gone another 100 miles with very little prodding. The cushion of the stock seat is sufficient for my weight. Perhaps if I put on 35 more pounds I'd like the Corbin better.

Sooo, I might be trying to sell the Corbin seat. More riding and testing to come....

I picked up a Blast tank bag on ebay. I had never seen one before. It is truely the littlest tank bag in the world. Anyway, I'm trying to figure if I've got the thing mounted correctly. I've got the back strap thru the hole near the top shock mount and looped through itself. The front strap is running thru the hole in the frame at the front of the tank. The bag looks like it is too far forward. Am I doing something wrong here?

No thats just the whay it is.. I had someone sew in a 4" length to the front peice that loops thru the frame and it moved the bag back a couple of inches so it dont jam into the instrament cluster.

I am dismayed to read of your problems with the Corbin. Since I do not want to spend $350 on one, I have decided to have Sargent rework my seat this winter. I never expect any seat to be perfect, but out of the 19 motorcycles that I've owned since 1969, I've never felt the need to replace a seat. But since a lot of those were Italian bikes, the seats were always too hard. The seat on my Blast is just too soft. I guess it is all about personal preference (and how much ballast you carry).

Prof,

Ping me if you want to get rid of the Corbin. At 220 I think the extra firmness would be a good thing.

From the point of view of the bottom of the seat facing up (not the position that it would be if you are sitting on it) it needs to be bent up. 5cm is about all I did and it made a world of difference.
