I have no overhead from which to suspend my Blast nor anyway to borrow an engine hoist. I have plenty of webbing and rope just nothing to attach it to. My thoughts are to put the rear up on jackstands and then use a car jack on the front via the engine. I still have some time to work it out. I've had my front wheel off enough times that my brake comes off quite easily (safety wire now) |

Well, I've had my new 2002 Blast for about one month now, and it's time to perform the 1000 mile service. Any logical (don't give me that bearing skating crap) reason why I shouldn't switch to synthetic oil in the trans and engine? James |

the only reason that I have heard is that you actually wear off imperfections in metal surfaces better with fossil oil. I know that my motor didn't really start to feel good until around 5K miles...I switched to synthetic at about 2500 miles |

Lightweight Primary Chain: All the twin cylinder Sportster/Buell engines run a triple row primary chain, including some 88 cu" monsters with well over 100 hp. On the Blast, you could run a double row chain, only 2/3 the strength, but with 45-60 wishfull hp, i don't think it would matter. The double row chain would seem to have a few advantages: lighter weight, and you could machine the teeth off the clutch outer and the primary sprocket to lighten them also. Just a thought. James |

Jprovo, I used Dino juice up to and including the 5K, but when I topped it off, I used synthetic. It's time for my 7.5K oil change, and I'll be going full synthetic then. Mobil 1 is the oil that I know has been tested against others that beat them out for sustaining viscosity. I don't think Amsoil was in that test, though. Amsoil, by my understanding, now supplies a Blast! oil filter. It's somewhere in the history of this board... |

A word about Synthetic oil. Mobil 1 is the only oil that to my knowledge has be approved (grudgingly) by HD as a viable substitute for their own house oil |

Tony, Do you change your synth oil every 2500 or 5000 miles? I know that with synth you can supposedly increase service intervals for the oil (still change the filter). Has anyone tried this? I'm deep in SoCal will 85-100+ degree heat on a regular basis in the summer, so I would change my dino oil at 2500 mile intervals. I'm wondering about 5-10K oil changes with 5K filter changes for synth. BTW, can you change the oil filter on the blast without draining the oil? James |

I change my oil every 2500 miles or so (more like every 3 months and/or 2500 miles). I have intervals of time off my bike that are long enough that I feel more comfortable changing it more often. If you try to change the filter without changing the oil you will end up with all the oil on the ground below the oil filter. |

Joey...big no, no. Don't mix oil types, one or the other only. Mixing synth and dino will alter the properties of the oil and render it less effective. Oil change intervals: remember, oil doesn't break down, it becomes contaminated. Additives in it, however can become less effective. Synths will get you about 1000 miles more before a change. It just depends on how much you love your bike. I got 5000 miles on my straight 60 dino oil 2 months ago on a trip to Wyoming and beyond and made it home ok. I was getting some valvetrain noise, but nothing that sounded harmful. This was not by choice mind you, the dealer in Jackson had no filters or time to do a change for me, so I just rode it out and kept an eye on the level. Anywhere else on the way home was closed for the weekend or non existent. |

According to Buell, the torque pulse on the Blast is higher than it is on the twins. So much so that they added some bolts to the clutch basket. Reducing the size of the primary chain would be bad. Most of the abuse the chain gets is from the torque pulses. I believe (and I've been wrong before..no..really!) that I read this in Battle2Win when the Blast was introduced. |

X1, I read an article that talked about mixing oils. I don't remember where I read it, but I do know that one of the problems with mixing oils is that one may have additives that react with the other. HD oil has no additives that are known to react with other oils, and Mobil 1 synthetic has no additives that are known to react with other oils. Several companies have gone so far as to mix Dino juice with synthetic, giving people a lower cost alternative. I noticed that as I added the synthetic that the engine seemed to move slightly more freely, but I suppose that could be the placebo effect or just more breaking in. I'll be changing the oil in a couple weeks, when I'll be switching to Mobil 1 completely. Can a person use 75W90 synthetic oil in the transmission? Exhaust question: What's to prevent a person from having a pipe made and attaching one of those cherry-bomb style mufflers? If it is cost effective, what would be the negatives? Details, please. I'm learning! |

Ask Aaron about the Cherry Bomb I think he actually tried in on the LSR Blast. Yes 75W90 Synthetic will work fine in fact that is what I'm planning on using tommorrow. I've never heard of any problems mixing oils but then I've never done it either. |

Just a Bub? Then 45/170 jetting,(I heavily modified the air box and filter,Bub pipe, Direct hits, and 45/175 jetting) other things call for more or less jetting. If you modify the air-box(free-er breathing) the off throttle burble sound- seems a little more even. Sweeeet sound though(engine braking;0))I love the Bub pipe! Everythings smooth now - and apointment for mr, dyno is now 8-14@9:30 . Just changed all the fluids- everything is fresh - doing brakes tomorrow. What type of cam should I be looking at if I was more concerned with increasing torque than horsepower? Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

All this talk about oil reminds me that it's time for a tranny change. I hope my rearsets are ready soon, that squeeze to the bolts on the Y-bracket looks ugly. -- dan |

X1G, You certainly have some unique opinions on synthetic versus conventional oils. Every responsible/knowledgeable source I've found says that mixing name brand synth and conventional automotive type engine oils poses absolutely no risk. And oil certainly does break down. It can lose viscosity and shear strength; heat and stress will take their toll, even on synthetics. I do agree that contaminants pose a significant threat to the ongoing integrity of engine oil. |

I know a guy in Seattle that has a cherry bomb on his M2. Sounds great, looks like shit (better than stock). Did the job though, and it certainly was cheap enough. |

All . . . I've a question on my wife's stone stock P3 (she won't let me near it with a wrench in my hand . . . .sezx the gleam in my eye makes her leery of my turning it into a mean-tempered, hard to start scooter . . . . .ironic given the question!) if you attempt to give the poor dear any gas at all within a couple of minutes of starting it, it stalls . . . . . .do it twice, and it's flooded, taking about 30 minutes to clear it's throat and be ready to try again . . . .. can this be normal? thanks |

ok, sao I figured I'd check the plug on the Blast . . . . . took out the manual, read all that has top be done to reach the darned thing (I fugured fuel tank removal can't be difficult ) . . .. I've got all the =covers and hardware off, got the big rubber sleeves off, but can't sneak the front-right lip of the tank past the stud . . . . . bottom of the tank is hard against the head . . . .any ideas from a blast-experienced wrench aas to how to ease the tank paast the right-hand stud? thanks |

Some times the manual is S^%#. If you need to check the plug you don't need to pull the tank just make sure you have a cheap spark plug socket that has Flats on the drive side put it on the plug and use a cressent to loosen then pull the plug socket off after 2 rotations and unscrew the plug by hand...there isn't enough room for the socket and the plug in that little space. Another thing to check is the carb/manifold coupler make sure it doesn't have a crack. |

Oh Btw, all you Blast racer fans of Flat track. You guys do know that team harley (Rick King & Jen Snyder) came in 1st and 4th (respectively) at the Red Mile in Lexington, Ky. last week on their H-D Blast 500R racers ! Very Cool and good news for Jen who is only back for her 3rd race since her horrendous crash last sept, in Seattle ! Just in case ya'll didn't know- I'm an ex-flat tracker and currently now just a fan, and have been following Jen's career the last year or so. I have pics if I can just figure out how to load them on this thingie.... |

Hey Ralph - it's good to see you, and that things are getting back to "normal" around here - never. Doing a little shakedown ride this week-end to feel out how things are working - probably north on 101 - coastal rides are always nice. Blasting on the dark side! EZ |
