Hey Ray, I got the info on the Dakota Tach. I was wondering about the display. Mine jumps all around when displaying the rpm, ie 2250 then 2180 then 2380. Is the dakota steady and smooth when you are cruising? Thanks for your time.

Kev,

The Daytona jumps around alittle but mine isn't as extreme as yours. Seems to give me the input that I need. Also gives you a clock which is helpful when riding in a leather jacket. I feel that with any digital that you will have some jumping, but the refresh rate on the Daytona is fast enough to keep it reasonably accurate.

I was driving my Blast around the other day, went to downshift and just about kicked the ground! The little shifter peg up and fell off on me. To buy a new one you got to buy the whole shifter shaft for 20 dollars so I bought a peg for a Harley XL1200 for 5 bucks but its got a different thread pattern so I got to tap it out.

Wierd, I bought the peg at the dealership for $3.00.

Of course, they did try to tell me yesterday that the (stock) footpeg is a discontinued item because the blast is discontinued....

I calmly picked up one of their 2003 brochures and showed them the blast (including the new color) They ordered the part...sigh (just have the rubber tearing up on the top, but have not completely designed the new rearsets yet)

Update on the Nallins 515 kit.

Things are going good. Just off the bottom end this thing moves when you are pulling away from a stop sign. The old motor would take some clutch working to get it going. Also this has a very strong upper RPM range with the stock cams. The down side is the mid is loading up. I put in a 45 pilot and a 170 main. Looks like I will have to come up with a carb kit with an adjustable needle to fix the mid.
I have a friend who is going to let me swap out the stock exhaust with a Vance and Hines. We want to know if this will help. So far it feels like the stock exhaust at high RPM is loading up the motor and not letting it breathe. I don't think buying the ignition module is going to make a difference on the upper RPMs without changing out the exhaust too. I think the stock Sport S cams come on around 2500 to 6000RPM. Can't seem to find anyone who knows what the RPM range is on these cams. So for now I am guess on this that they are only good to around 6800RPM before shuting off. I am going to see if the Vance ANd Hines will push it harder to the RPM shut off at 6500RPM. IF it does I will then try the ignition module to see if the stock cams will pull to 7500RPM.
But for know I will start with the exhaust and see how it goes..
Also I am at 4200 feet above sea level. I am thinking with this kit at or around sea level this thing should rip...

The stock cams/heads in my M2 started to nose over the torque curve at 4700 RPM. If you relish the low end, but want beefier mid range, a good porting job and a set of Carl's CM580 cams worked extremely well for me. I couldn't be happier.

Those S cams are incredibly narrow. They are definitely not a top end grind. Your mid-range problem is a reversion from the stock exhasut can. Most all Buells have that, but the Blast seems particularly bad. I'd be amazed if you can fix it by tinkering with the carb.

Just a quick question for ponderance- Where can you find the white blast as seen on the buell blast website under the accessories section. Was this color offered on earlier models or what? I have never seen one, just curious.

Just trying to find as much info as I can.

Does anyone know? How quick a Blast is in a 1/4 mile. 0-60mph time. Top speed and the like.

Help me out if you can.

thanks.

1/4 mile in about 15.2 according to Motorcyclist and a top speed of about 100. It's the bikes 0-60 that really hauls ass cause of its gearing but I dont know those times.

0-60 hauls ass??

My civic can keep up off the line (with my sister driving).

Don't get my wrong, I love my blast, but a speed demon it is not.

Need some help..

Ok, Just got the bike on the Dyno today and was very disapointed with the results. Here is what the bike is running.

Nallin's stage three head work
Nallin's big bore kit 515cc
Nallins Huricane piston
K and N filter/modified airbox
Vance and Hines exhaust.
170 main and a 45 pilot/air screw stock setting
Stock sport S cams..
It put out only 29.1 HP and 28 ft pds torque. (Note: the torque is a perfect bell curve and comes on at 2500 RPM and goes to 6500RPM falling off. THe HP is climbing straight all the way up.)

The good news is the bike was still pulling when it hit the stock 6500RPM limit so how much more power can it get going to 7500RPM?

With all this work I do not understand why this bike is not putting out more power.

I do not see how changing out the cams and the module/ignition will put 48 HP at the rear like they are claming in Battle Twin (Note: they are using different things such as Force exhaust, Andrews N70 cams, new module/ignition.)

I am thinking that the Vance and Hines is not a high end pipe and is taking some power away from top end.
Maybe with the new screaming eagle module/ignition it has different advance curves to put the bikes power curve up more.
Or maybe with puting the 6500RPM limit to 7500RPM it will push out more power but I am not thinking more than 10 HP.

Maybe the rings did not set in right.. But it feels strong and there is no smoking coming out of the exhaust.

Maybe dyno to dyno they could be off? Or the factory claims on power are seriously way off. Running back to back with a stock Blast this thing just kills it, so does that mean a stock blast is really putting out 20 HP or less at the rear wheel?

I am going to try the module in the next couple of days to see if that make a difference to the top end HP.

The bike is very strong off idle and through the mid.. It is running rich on bottom a little lean in the mid and right on on top with the jets. It does need a adjustable needle to fix the mid and adjust the air screw but that doesn't effect top end.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has used the new scream eagle igition/module. Did it feel like it was making more power all the way to 7500RPM.

Philip,

You need to think about what you said above. When making modifications to any motor wether single cylinder or multi you have to optimize that motor for what you want from it. This means that yes cams, module, intake length, exhaust length, etc. can all be factors. You have the head work and a bigger bore, but from what I see from your post you haven't tuned it to get the power you want.

I'm currently doing many mods to my Blast and the research in getting the power that I want has required about 3 months so far and is still going on.

I would reccomend purchasing a copy of the "V-Twin Tuners Handbook" by D. William Denish. It has been very informative. Getting those power gains that you want requires more than bolting those parts on.

RD, this is a classic case of the theory of constraints at work.

Is your motor's capability the sum total of the go-fast parts in it? I think most people tend to look at it this way. The common perception is that each go-fast part you hang on it adds some power, and the more go-fast parts you put on, the more power you have.

There's another perspective, though, that basically says no, the motor's capability is the level of it's weakest part. If part "X" is holding it back, it doesn't matter at all if you change part "Y", it won't help. Work on the thing constraining the engine. When you fix that, something else becomes the constraint, figure out what it is and go work on it.

I really think that's what's happening here.

I don't know for sure what the constraint is here, but I have some hunches. Can you post the dyno sheet?

BTW, lots and lots of people have dyno'ed bone stock Blasts and got about 27hp, myself included. Peak power is not influenced by the advance curve, only by the total advance at the rpm of interest, which is easily adjustable even with the stock module. There's a fixed mathematical relationship between torque, rpm, and hp ... the shape of the hp curve is defined by the shape of the torque curve.

RD,

I think Aaron is hinting towards this... you are running the stock cams right? :) Aaron certainly knows his way around a Nallinized Blast engine. I'll be anxious to find out what he does recommend. Pretty sure he'll say something like... Stage three heads are wasted on stock cams, that the cams are constraining the engine.

You might also try to optimize the timing and jetting while on the dyno. It can be an iterative process. And yes, what Phillyblast said, your dyno results are factored SAE or STD numbers right?

In addition to Aaron's fine advice, you should also give Nallin Racing a call; they will be glad to help you. I'm betting they will recommend some cams and possibly an ignition module to help you wake that thumper up.

Let us know what you learn.

Aaron-

I've been thinking about articles you should write for the mag. You certainly understand the importance on synergy in an engine...

Perhaps you could work to break the bolt on horsie paradigm...

Been out riding the Blast today with the Vance and Hines and you guys are not kidding. This thing is loud. It is way louder than the Buell pro race pipe I had on the S-1.

I feel that when I am out riding everyone is looking at me. This pipe makes everyone think the Blast is some big race bike....

RD,

Just for reference, my Blast pulled 29RWHP and 28FT/LBS with only a carb modification (new needle and main, I think) and at the time it was running like crap. Something's definitely up if you posted those numbers with all the mods you've put into the thing, although I'll definitely leave the postulations to more qualified people on the board.

Just returned from 1,405 miles in 5 days on the Blast. My wife's cousin rode along on my Electra-Glide. We made a loop around Washington state, one of my goals since buying the Blast two years ago.

I'll update my small website with trip info and digital pix later but here is the lowdown:

0) My Blast is stock 'cept for the Buell windshield (wouldn't have left home without it) and Pirelli MT75's (new one on the back).
1) The Blast performed flawlessly. It used about 10 ounces of oil (Mobil-1 15W-50). Now, with 8500 miles the motor seems to have loosened up some more.
2) Averaged 66 MPG - much of the riding in E Wash was in 85 to 102 degree heat, some was against fierce winds, especially along the Columbia river.
3) 380 miles - most miles in a day. The stock seat is not that terrible, but a gel pack would help. Average was 280 miles per day.
4) Most exciting(?) moment: while passing a semi, with another semi behind me ready to pass me, the fuel cut out! Good thing I made sure earlier to know how to reach for it on the fly. Five seconds later I was Blasting again.
(5) Best place: Bridges Cafe in Raymond, WA with fresh oysters (they harvest them there) and Red Hook on tap. :)

Great trip. My 50+ year young body is sore. Would do it again, but maybe Oregon state next time.
