The Avon is supposed to come in first part of next week. I will take some pictures of me and the Little Kid breaking the bead on the rear tire so everyone will know how to do it if they get in a pinch!

Well the brown christmas van showed up and left an Avon MT52 for the rear. The Big Kid(Whos now has a summer job at a tire store) helped me with this install, he kept asking where the machine was! Instead of pinching the tire between two 2X4s and running a car up on it I used a C clamp

C-clamp

It was actually easier than trying to guide the Jeep up on a 2X4 !
This was actually the Little Kids idea.

Swamp: Hats off to you for changing the tire yourself. I have not tried that in years. Have a great day

The dealer quoted me $65 (1hr labor) to change the rear tire, not including the cost of the tire of course. Does that sound about right?

Naustin, try and find a place that services dirt bikes, they will usually be able to take care of you. The place I go charges $20 per tire, balanced.

Naustin: I'm confused by the fact that you would heat & bend a set of handlebars, but you wont pull off the rear wheel? It is super easy and much less difficult than pulling off handlebars.$65 will easily cover the cost of the needed socket & torque wrench.
I paid $70 (total w/tax) for the rear Pirrelli including mount and balance at the local bike store.(I brought in the wheel).
$65 does sound right for dealer price however.

Gearhead - your guess was correct - I don't own a torque wrench. I may buy one if I can find a local shop to mount and balance my tire.

The only other shop in my area is a Kawasaki shop. I'm going to call them today and find out what they charge for just the mounting and balancing.

That handlebar project was just for fun, really. I always planned on buying a set of bars if it didn't work out - which I was about 90% sure it wouldn't. I was inspired by the old cafe racers that made their own stuff, and once I get on a roll, I don't stop till I hit the bottom of the hill.

Anyway. Like I said, I might still pull it off myself. More than anything, I was just wondering if my dealer was being straight or trying to screw me.

I guess I'm a little spoiled. There are at least a dozen Harley dealers within a 2 hour drive,2 within 10 minutes (on a good traffic day). That means there are lots more of the other brands dealers, plus lots of independent shops.(There are motorcycle shops that just specialize in wheels & tires!

Anybody got any ideas what to do with the old tires that are starting to pile up in the garage?

I already roasted them see the above pics, it keeps the Big Kid from driving on them when they are too low on tread.

Just on a side note, several times on the board the Avon tire has been referred to as the MT52 (rear) and MT51 (front). This is not correct.

The correct tire codes are AM52 and AM51.

(i thought for a second that I'd ordered the wrong tire, but I realized that it was just being referred to with the wrong prefix in the code.)

Swampy- I hope you just keep posting every time you do something to one of your bikes. I seems that my bike is right behind yours...Rocker box gasket, adjust primary, isolator mounts, tires, etc. So- now I need to go check my bike for Bearing Problems: What am I looking for? I can lift the rear end on jackstands with a rod going through the axle. Thanks again to all who post help for the mechanically disinclined like me!

When you have the bike up on the stands pry the rear brake pads apart a little and then see if you can rock the wheel back and forth sideways, pull on the back of the tire and push on the front of the tire from one side of the bike. There should be no rocking or noise like a clunk from the wheel. The wheels run with no freeplay.

Now all you folks running Avons.......How much wheel weights were used to balance the tire?

I am still getting a vibration over 70 I can't tell if it is on the front or the rear. I guess it is from the rear because I can see the front running steady.
Has anyone had a problem with a rear motor mount? I haven't had the time to look under the little bugger yet to figure things out.

On todays ride I got to watch the Big Kid ride, the rear Avon was JUMPING! I pulled it off tonight after doing all the other repairs and checked the tire for balance, found it heavy at the valve stem, so tomorrow when I get time I will run into town and get some stick-on wheel weights and let the fun begin.

Swampy, I've seen a much as 2 oz of lead to balance rear Avons. I actually had them dismount one and remount it turned 180 degrees, because it wanted to balance at over 2 oz.

Well I made a makeshift balancer and found the tire to be heavy at the valve stem. I broke the bead(Using the C-Clamp method) and rotated the tire 180 degrees. I found the tire heavy 180 from the valve stem now, by almost 2 0z.

I got some self sticking wheel weights this morning and put 1 5/8 oz near the valve stem, meaning even with the heavy spot on the wheel the tire must be way out of balance by more than what I put on it. The Avons had no spot marked on them for the light spot. Anyways I had it up past 80mph and it was real nice so, be prepared to balance the Avons!

I think the Avons handle better. They roll smoothly into leans through corners. The Kendas it kind of breaks into the lean, kind of like push, push, push, then too far. But the Kendas are wider and look better.
