RD, Nallin Racing designs their own pistons, but they are manufactured elsewhere by a shop that specializes in making pistons for some of the NASCAR teams and other endurance racing applications. |

Oil query: Mobil 1 is now advertising a new formula for their oil: "Super-synthetic" instead of the former "Tri-Synthetic" or something like that. Who among the knowing can help explain the differences and what it means for Blast owners? I have a 6-pack of the former in my garage ready for the next 3 oil changes. |

It's official, my computer hates me. After all the nice things I've done for it too. Anyway, here's a link that should work.

Happy 2 year birthday to my Blast - w/ 6800 miles. The first change to Mobil 1 15W-50 seems to have a slightly smoother motor, but that could just be a placebo effect. But getting the clutch cover off to put new sport-tranny fluid really torx me off. So what kind of Mobil gear oil should I consider for the next change? Any testimonies of using it? |

Mobil 1 75/90 gear oil. Pilk BTW use the oil you have first, or put it in your cage. |

I installed the Kerker and the 45/170 jet combo and it makes a huge difference in how the bike responds and pulls. Keeping up with traffic and getting arround on the highway is MUCH easier now. Also, as far as the airbox goes. I have read references here to "opening it up" but no actual specifics. So I may or may not be talking about the same thing here but let me tell you what I found and did. The left hand side of the airbox has a venturi shaped inlet that actually restricts the inlet size by about 20~25%. The ring that actually seals against the filter has a second ring and then the venturi inside it. I cut the venturi off and used an Xacto knife to trim back to the ring that seals on the airfilter. Then I used a fine sandpaper to get the inlet smooth with rounded edges. It has made a noticeable difference in concert with the pipe, the engine just breathes allot better. I will probably do a cam next. |

S-brat, The mods that you have made are simular to those that I made and improved the performance a great deal. You might want to read through the P-3 archives as I also constructed an inexpensive intake/aircleaner for my bike that worked very well. In terms of changing cams on the bike, I would strongly recommend that you think over and research all of your options. One of the weak areas in this motor is the head. Which limits you in terms of air flow and RPMS. Nallin does good work in remedying this. And if cams are being considered this should also be strongly considered. Brian Nallin is currently working on mine, although I am not going with the big bore kit as I want to stay in the 500cc class at Bonneville this year. Have fun, Ray |

Understood, as far as total gain the head/bigbore is the best way to go. However in my case I am trading the bike in for a bigger Buel next year and I am just looking for a low cost warm over. So far I have right at $200 for the pipe and jets. For a years use, I could see another $200 but not another grand. I may pull the head and look at porting it, I have experience with this on car engines. So far, research is pointing me at the B50 cam. |

Subaru, Are you using a K and N filter on the Blast with your air box or are you using stock air filter? |

I am using the stock filter which I am willing to bet flows as well as a K&N. I have a K&N in my Impreza Turbo and I love it and the Blast one seems similar. I will take pics of the airbox and post them on my website, www.subarubrat.com sometime Monday afternoon. |

Subaru, Well I took a look at the stock airbox and you were right. The inlet looks very restrictive. The size is 1 3/4 inches round. When you get done opening it up it goes to 2 5/8 inches round. It took me about 2 hours for the work. I am running the K and N filter. I took it for a spin and it seemed to have more power at higher speeds. It was giving me about 5 mph faster going up the same canyon running in 5th gear... |

Anybody know where I can buy jets? I don't need the whole kit, just a 45 and 170. I had found one shop online, but they had a minimum order of $20 (the jets were $12). -- dan |

Dash, I went through all that last week. I ordered from rage performance who sent me the right slow jet but the wrong fast jet. Then I called the dealership that said they didn't sell jets when I called the week before and I got a different person who said they did. A friend stopped by to pick it up for me and it was the wrong part. I finally got to the dealership later that day and got the right one. Actual cost was 3.50 for the slow, 4.00 for the main, and about 12.00 in wasted shipping, gas and a wrong part. Still cheaper than the kit and the lesson is, pull the jets and take them to the dealership for reference. The combo I used with the Kerker pipe and airbox mod was 45 slow and 170 main. Both should be under $10. at a dealership. |
