You will need the original bolts, nuts, washers, clamp, grommet & spacers. Most are hardware store available except the clamp, grommet & spacers. I can fax you a copy of the installation instructions. I could also list the part #s that are unavailable at the hardware store.

I'll see if I can't pick up some other dudes hardware. I was going to buy his stock exhaust, but I didn't even think about needing the stock parts. Hopefully I can convince him to part with just the mounting stuff and not have to buy the whole exhaust off him.

i was thinking of getting a blast just to ride to work, how is the power on it? im used to riding a sportster (but that was destroyed) so would i be bored on a blast? how about power to avoid getting squashed by a cager? the bike is very light, so it seems like it would also be easy/fun to play on a windy road.

Decker - go for it.

The Blast is very fun. It has a lot of low-end torque, and would be a great about-town bike. It is VERY nimble. I've ridden mine in rush-hour traffic with no problems. (I did get a very bright LED taillight to lessen my changes of getting rear-ended.) It well out-turns the Sportster.

It doesn't compare to a Sportster at highway speeds. I've had the Blast up over 80MHP, but it feels every bump in the road and is a tad shakey.

65 MPH and under it was quite nice (for me - others use a Blast for highway riding - I just prefer the Sportster for that).

Get a Corbin gunfighter seat $215 from Corbin, or a sponsor here: americansportbike.com

The Blast is my first choice (& I have choices)for riding to work (everyday). Its nimble, will brake at least as good as your Sportster(havent tested the brakes on a new Sportster lately) and handle better. It has enough power to get out of the way (drop it down a gear or 2).
Its also very low maintenance, takes a crash well (cheaply). The colour impregnated plastic bodywork means it will take abuse like strapping a cooler or luggage on the back and you wont have to worry about scratching the paint.
It can cruise 75-80mph on the highway all day (it wont however feel as stable as your XLr or V-strom).
I would suggest the Pro Series exhaust to go along with the Corbin seat. Pirelli tires are also more stable on the freeway than the stock Dunlops.

Decker, The Blast is just that - A Blast. Go take one for a test ride, let the dealer know that you are serious about buying one and go put 30+ miles on it. That should make up your mind. Personally, I'd take a Blast over a Sporster any day!

Gearheaderiko - braking on an 05 Sporty are nowhere near as good as the Blast. I don't know if it is the brakes themselves (probably) and/or the weight difference.

The Sporty's brakes are OK, but I was spoiled by the Blast's brakes.

Jprovo - for commuting, yes, the Blast is excellent. I love the leaning ability in the twisties.

For 2-ups, or long distance, or highway driving I take the Sportster.

You can do all that with the Blast. I've done it. I put over 1,500 miles on the Blast in 2 months - not bad for a beginner, I guess. It is a great bike for all the reasons people posted above.

My wife is taking over the Blast, so I got a Sportster last weekend for my intended trips and 2-ups. It takes a bit more effort to turn and stop. But, is has much more acceleration (great for entering the highway in rush hour) and the weight smooths out the bumps.

I like having both bikes in the garage. I've found that many Buell owners also have a Sportster.

I have two Blasts and a Sportster. The Blast is by far more comfortable than the Sportster for long trips. Last year the Big Kid and my friend rode the Blasts up to Copper Harbor and back in three days with side trips over 1400 miles. I switched over to one of the Blasts at the bridge and rode it home 200 miles at 85mph. I just rode over 300 miles 2up with the Little Kid who weighs in at over 200 lbs.

Decker,

That site is ancient, and not very well written. Most of the problems with the Blast you wil find well documented here, and none of them are major and repetitive. Just poke around, but a STOCK Blast is darn near Bulletproof.

The party line is that the Blast and the XB platforms are some of the most reliable out there. Judgeing from the people that I ride with, and what little problems they have with their bikes, it is an accurate statement.

Any bike is going to have a few problems, and the guys with problems are usually making the most noise. Just take it all with a grain of salt, and realise that it is real tough to buy a unreliable motorcycle in this day and age. Most modern Buells are very reliable.

Well tomorrow is my first "long" trip on my two week old Blast. I've got 420 miles on it, and tomorrow I'll head from the suburbs of Washington, D.C. to Virginia Beach, VA and return. 7-8 hours total on the Blast. Just to have lunch with the grandkids. I'll let you know how I and my butt hold up. : )

Well I made it on my first long trip. 400.9 miles according to the trip meter. The longest I've ever driven a motorcycle. The Blast did great. My butt didn't. Now I know what someone meant when they said it burned. It does. Had a great ride though. Left the house at 0530 and drove Route US 1 to Fredricksburg VA then picked up US 17 to Newport News. I-64 to Virginia Beach. Got there around 1000. Rode in heavy fog in Tappahnock. Had to stop and dry the outside and inside of my face shield as it fogged up too. Varied the speeds, didn't go over 55 until I hit 500 miles, then I varied the speeds again, only faster. Took it up to 80 once, just to see how it would do. It did great. I really like this motorcycle. Had lunch with my wife and the grandkids. She was already down there. Around 1400 (2pm) started back. Figured I'd take I-64 to Richmond then I-95 North. Bad choice. Bumper to bumper to Richmond, same way North on I-95 until I reached Quantico. The only thing out of the ordinary was the guy in the BMW ahead of me decides to wash his windshield. Don't know if his washer jets are mis-aligned, but the spray came over the top and hit me. Oh well. The trip was fun, the Blast performed flawlessly. It now has 800 + miles on it. Tomorrow, the HOV lanes. Good night all.

CWO4,

Glad to hear that you had fun. It sounds like you had a nice little trip.

If you keep up with the long distance riding, you will want a better seat. Other thatn that, as you have allready found out, the Blast is a very well rounded bike.

Sounds like you had a good time! How far did you go before you hit reserve, and did you push it or just fill up then?

Those ads claiming a 200 mile cruising range on the Blast really bug me, because I hit reserve and fill it up at around 100 miles every tank.

I'm thinking of selling my Blast. It's been a great bike with almost no problems, but after almost three years of ownership, it's only got about 1600 miles on it. I'm really not riding it enough. Call it a mid-life crisis (I just turned 50), but I find myself lusting after Lightnings. So, I think I'll list it on eBay and see what happens. But, just in case anyone here is interested, I thought I'd mention it (I know, run an ad, don't post it here!)

I'm going to mention it here anyway. It's a 2003 in screaming yellow. I bought it new. I had Sargents put gel in the (tall) seat, but other than that it is box stock, or will be once I pull off the Flanders TT handlebars and the Ventura pack. It's located in the Chicago western suburbs.

Anyone interested can contact me off the BBS so as not to clog the cyberwaves.

Naustin, To answer your question, I was at 120 miles when I hit reserve. Since I was out in the country I stopped at the next gas station, about 5 miles from when I hit reserve. It took 1.92 gallons to fill it up. That's filling it up to where there is still room between the tank and the neck. BTW, I'm still learning how to put gas in. A couple of times I had too much force on the gas pump handle and sloshed some back up on the top of the tank. Another tid bit of info. I now have 935 miles on it, so I called my dealer and they told me the 1000 mile service would be around $250 and the turn around time would be up to 10 days. I called another dealership and they said the turnaround time was also around 10 days. Is this standard, and is it like this at other places? Both places were very polite and professional, but 10 days?

No, thats just crappy customer service! Tell them a) you want an appointment. b) ask them if they need a deposit to order the parts for the service (oil filter!).c) you need the bike for work-its your daily driver (they may or may not believe you).

A few places around here have a first come first serve policy & you can wait for your bike.
It might be 10 days before they can get to it, but to keep your bike for 10 days to do 2 hours worth of work is not acceptable and tell them so.
Ask them if they would keep a 'patch holders' (aka Hells Angel) bike or a professional messengers bike for 10 days to do a 1000 mile service. I dont think so. Dont let them put you perpetually last in line because its a Blast and not a Road King.

PS I dont know what a 'Beltway Bandit' is. It sometimes doesnt hurt to throw around the Navy title or being a Vietnam vet (they also have their own MC club).

Gearheaderiko,

A Beltway Bandit is a slang term for someone who works for a company that has a contract with the Federal Government and is located inside the Beltway, I-495, which circles DC. And to mention Vet status, well I served in Vietnam in 1968, Beirut 82, Desert Shield/Storm 89 and had four Pentagon tours. CWO4 is a Chief Warrant Officer Four. I think that's enough to "throw around." Thanks for the info. I'll call and gripe tomorrow.

I made an appointment for my 1000 mile service. I dropped it off after work, they had it all the next day, and I picked it up the following afternoon. I think it was only like $100, too...

Judging by other's people's experiences, I'd have to say, however, that I have the best dealer ever.

Bergdale HD in Albert Lea, MN. ; ) Good luck.

Im parting out a 2001 Buell Blast. The engine and transmission have 1,149 miles on them. The bike was in very good condition when the head gasket blew. I had originally planned to sup it up but now I am just going to part it out. I really don't have the time, money or space. Anyone who is interested can call me at 702 290 2413 or e-mail me at sdunn702@msn.com. My name is Sean.

Well guys, got the pro-series exhaust last week and....where the head pipe splits in two was welded really janky or something, and it won't fit into the muffler. So now I have to send it back and wait for a(nother) new pipe. I figured the buell pipe I wouldn't have to deal with it being cruddy, but I guess I had to get that one pipe that was a pain in the arse. I haven't ridden in a month! : (
