But Aaron, it only happens at half throttle and when cold and after the bike is already shifted into 2nd gear. Worn dogs would seems to affect things when initially shifting, not when rolling on the throttle afterwards. It seems like worn dogs trying to engage would make a bit of a racket too.

Tony, have you done any maintenance or work on the primary or tranny lately?

Nothing has been done to the MOTOR. 4000 miles ago I changed the primay fluid. 700 miles ago I changed the oil other than that it's been left alone to funtion as is. I adjusted the Clutch cable about 1000 miles ago but even the Mechanic says that it's good and that I did a good job. This isn't a continous problem after about 10-20 minutes of riding it's non-exsistant.

I would change the primary fluid.

This is just a W.A.S.G.

Chances are you have water from condensation over the winter in there and that might be causing the slipping.

Jose, I live in Hawaii...granted I was on and off for times up to a month but the weather here during my last trip was in the 90's not the 20's. I don't have a winter just a summer and more summer

yea Tony - but HI is very humid/tropical - I would still at least check the t-fluid for impurities.(always easiest to hardest) Brightside - maybe a Baker 6-sp. in your future - just gaging - Blasting on the dark side!

people are under the impression that O'ahu is tropical Jungle when in fact only 1/4 of the island is jungle and the rest is desert. Dry except for the sprinklers. I will check the tranny fluid but I'm not expecting that to be the problem, it's only rained where I live 4 days in the last 7 months and I have to water cactus. A Baker 6 would be nice but if mine's bad HD is not likely to buy me a Baker (as much as I would like them to).

Night and day. The Blast has no trap door, for starters. It's a split the cases deal.

the question really becomes - will it fit - and wo'nt they probably be making one for the firebolt and wouldn't that one transfer down to the blast. More to the point could it be made to fit without massive re-engineering? Bolting on is nice but with a nip here, tuck there machining could it be made to work? Thats the question I ask. All hd bragged about was that this was a sporster trans. and should be bullet proof for a single - they lied? Just how dif. and what mod.s could be done to adapt? EZ blasting on the darkside!

Do you guys even USE 5th gear? It seem that a 6th gear would be wasted on a Blast, Unless:

A. You could rev it to 7500 rpm like a Firebolt
B. The engine had enough power to actually accelerate with that 6th gear.

Hey Everyone,
I am currently riding a 2001 yellow buell blast. I have had a honda 50cc dirtbike, honda 90cc fourtrax fourwheeler, and a honda 250 rebel. What can I say, my dad loves motorcycles as do I. He has a Harley Road King, and my mom has a 1200 Custom Sportster. A family that rides together stays happy together. Im 15 years old,(only 4 more days) and have customized my bike from paycheck to paycheck. I have been reading the forums for several weeks, and have found out that they actually made accessories for the blast. I have put a V&H Jetkit,V&H Exhaust, Clear taillight, Removed Blast stickers, and have the saddlebags. Payed for everything with a 5.15$ an hour working at Subway. Cost is a major concern. I was wondering, Are they clip-on bars worth the extra money. Or do the clubmans fit just as well? And is there anywhere online that i could get a color coded fareing? I would realy appreciate it. Yall have awesome bikes. Thanks for posting everyone.

Personally, I think that the cost difference from the clubmans to the clip-ons makes them as good or better. Granted, I've never ridden with the clip-ons so I can't really say, but I'm very happy that I still have $150 in my pocket to spend on other things.

Wild Hare Accessories has some generic clip-ons that might work with the blast, for $100 or so.

Jose - I might be completely off on this, but isn't the change from 5 to 6 speeds more involved than adding an extra gear at the top end? That is, 5th becomes 6th, and an extra gear gets thrown in between 3rd and 4th. (or something like that). In that case, 6 speeds would be awesome. Either way, I do use 5th on the freeway. Not in traffic, I usually need the pickup of 4th for those tight lane changes.

On the bright side, ITS FINALLY WARMING UP HERE!!!

Ok, being the inquisitive guy that I am, I went to the Baker (bakerdrivetrain.com) website, here's what I found.

GearStockBakerXL6
1st2.692.52
2nd1.971.96
3rd1.431.44
4th1.181.18
5th1.01.0
6th---.86

Guess Jose was right. With these gearing ratios, I don't think I would ever use 6th gear except for the longest stretches. However, if the ratios were more along the lines of this:

GearStockBakerXL6
1st2.692.5
2nd1.972.0
3rd1.431.75
4th1.181.50
5th1.01.25
6th---1.0

(Probably not those exact ratios, but you get the idea) That, I think, would make for a very fun ride. Then again, I really don't know that much about this sort of thing. Aaron?

Well, hey, if you're already modifying the Blast to accomodate a totally different gearbox, how much harder can it be to cut new gears and make the ratios you want?

Gee - the experts sure are silent on this - could be they do'nt know? Making custom gears is a hundred times more difficult than dealing with clearence/fitting adapting of simular type parts/systems. I know this from adapting Porshe and type 4 and type 2 VW parts to the type 1 Bug.
transmission and engine parts. So I am asking can it be done, and if so then refering to the other 6-speed forrum here - what mod.s should I look for to be done to accomplish this transformation? EZ blasing on the dark side!

Hmm, appears you missed the sarcasm.

You're looking for a description of what's involved in putting a $2300 aftermarket wide ratio 6-speed trap door gearbox into a 27hp $4400 motorcycle that isn't even designed for a trap door gearbox? Seriously?

Okay. My recommendation would be to study the shop manuals and parts books for both bikes. Then if it still looks feasible, split the cases and see if the gearbox area physically has room (some clearance grinding is needed in an XL motor to accomodate the 6-speed) and whether spacings between shafts and so forth are the same.

Forgive me if this research is not something I'm inclined to do myself. The whole thing just makes no sense to me, on multiple levels.

I did'nt ask for research(that I can and do already pursue in my spare time)I'm talking about knowledge(to know of) as for cost if money where my consideration - my first major purchase for this bike would not have been special Avon tires at over 400.00, (just bought second set - my size disc. will look at metz. next)Feasability of something being able to fit and work correctly is my question. I've split vw,s a fair number of times and will probably be into my Blast soon enough - so if I pull out my gear set and put it on a table next to an XL set what are the differences, also compaired to an XB9R? So your sugesting I buy a parts manual for all three - yet none of those books give specific sizes for comparrison - so I ask for knowledge not nescessarily another's research - still I'm not fussy and will take anything - including the material that would have those specific measurements - no shots here - I know such an investment would be pricy - still not insane if you really like the bike;0) EZ - Blasting on the dark side!

Well, I guess my point was that IMO this idea is so far out in left field, it's unlikely you'll find someone who has already researched it and therefore acquired the knowledge you seek. And therefore you should not be surprised at the lack of responses. But maybe, you never know. Good luck, in any event.

Dan: Just reduce the primary or secondary drive ratio by 14% and your 6th gear would be back down to a 5th type ratio.

Road Weazel, Squishy is not springs, squishy is damping. Bottoming out is springs.

'Weazel sez...
OK, so I have a bike that's both underdampened AND undersprung up front. What's the solution?

btw, underdampened is my '74 Sprint, with no oil in the forks 'cause it's all on my trailer rails and pant legs. I'm not sure that the Sprint dives as bad as the Buell under front braking, but then the squeezers aren't as good on the '74, either.

Xgecko, I had a similar problem with my M2. It was a bent shifter fork. It would seem to disengage from 4th under wot. It only occurred maybe 4 times & it was very intermittent. It would disengage momentarily then reengage once I backed off on the throttle. It never occurred when I let out the clutch, only after it was already in gear & at WOT. The dealer replaced a shifter fork & 4th & fith. Has been fine ever since.
