Aaron: You give any thought to turbocharging your P3? It seems like it would be so darn simple that you could pretty much just buy the proper sized turbocharger and cobble together the plumbing yourself.

geez - w/an Aerocharger - I thought - possible - but the cost - again in the pricy section - I'm keeping my one over the top item for this years goal to be the Whitek FI - saving furiously for it. then if I got a serious bonus suspension mod.s. With the variable vane tech to protect against over build-up of preasure - I thought it should be a go where a regular turbo wouldn't. just two worthless pennies worth - lol - 60hp would be fine;0) weeeeeeeeeee!

Blake, would there be enough back pressure for a turbo to even work on the blast? Just imagine what that thing would sound like, it'd be stutter weezing everywhere... (and if you are only going to use 5-10lbs of boost, it's just silly.... needs at least 25 to be outragous...) where on the curve? The Blast is fine down low, but bump it around 4000 and it's quiet, things just start getting fun again around 5500. If your boost range is only 2000rpm, you aren't gonna see a huge difference (until that rocker box flies off with a heart breaking POW! tink tinktink..) Fun none the less...

On a side note, I remember reading some literature about Buell originally buying the tooling for a v-4 configuration that he use early on to make that 750 superbike back in the mid 80's. If he still has the tooling, I wonder if we'll ever see a v4 Buell.... 750cc, 168bhp, god that'd just be the cat's ass... maybe bump it to 1000cc's to compete in GP.

Only the future will tell.. ( and if it happens, I'm sooooooooooooooo there..)

Regarding a Turboed Blast...

I've been thinking about it for a while. I think the bike looks like it has stuff missing when people yank the airbox. Kinda seems like a nice place to try to stuff a turbo - at least aesthetically.

Are the existing turbos blow through or draw through types? What kinds of carbs are run? Anycomments on the oiling system as far as the turbo goes? Never gave it much though, but it would seem that with a draw through design, the intake pulses the carb sees would be significantly less... Anyone who really knows car to comment?

I'd also be concerned about the belt. How wide is the XB belt? 11mm? How about the Blast? The XB only makes a few percent more torque per power stroke. A 10 PSI turbo system would add maybe something in the neighborhood of 50 percent more torque after some detuning losses to hopefully keep the thing alive.

I don't really know. To further add to the sillyness, does anyone know the stock cam specs for the Blast? Is there too much overlap for a trubo? Sounds lame coming from a 2 stroke guy, but I hate blowing unburned crap out the exhaust.

Sorry about the silly bantering. Just nice to see others stumbling on the same stuff that had been haunting me for a bit...

D_Storm,
I believe the 4-cyl engine you're referring to was a two-stroke based engine. Screamed, but wound'nt even come close to EPA noise/emissions regs these days. (Unless they're working on some super secret stuff like some of the other 2-stroke engine developers are working on that I've heard indirectly about.)

Looks like a few of you have had to buy new tires for your Blast. I'm coming up on the same deal. Could some of you provide the specifics on the brand, size, etc that you purchased and how you like them? Would appreciate any help as I would at least like to look at something other than the Buell tires. Thanks!

Tires that are made in the stock Buell Blast sizes

Dunlop K330 Fr:100/80/16 R:120/80/16 OEM
Pirelli MT75 Fr:100/80/16 R:120/80/16
Avon AV51/52 Fr:100/80/16 R:120/80/16

I've used the Pirelli's and was most pleased with them I'm trying the Avons for variety and because they look cool

Rebel: That's one heck of a college race car.

The Beull RW750 uses a square four two stroke engine. Nothing from that insanely fast motorcycle will ever likely see the street.

Emissions and noize be damned.. I still want one (even if there's only 2. grrr, wonder if Eric will let me rummage around the garage a few times, mayhaps I can come up with at least a couple parts. It's my dream darn it..)

Too bad about the never seeing the street part though. I think an American liter bike would be awesome, and definately a twist on the "V" series that America is so famous for. Personally, I just want lots of horsepower in a tiny package. My race bike has 121bhp @ 330lbs, which is close, but it just doesn't have anywhere NEAR the appeal that the Blast, or any other Buell does... to bad people just aren't taking them seriously, I'd love to see a Buell in SuperMono, GP, as well as the rest of the twin racing. Can't wait to see if Buell also adapts to the 60deg V that the new HD uses (also in use by Aprillia on their Mille I believe...)

I know my wish list is huge, but I can't help it! From such a young company, Buells have an unlimited potential!

JD, the Mille is a Rotax engine yes it's 60degrees but that's about the end of the similarities.

On a seperate note I was reading on a yahoo group that there is a new Screaming Eagle programable ignition for the Blast (or that will work on the Blast) anyone heard anything????

I've often thought(price aside) that a turbo designed like an Aero-charger with a waste-gate between it and the inlet of the FI system to relieve preasure between power strokes - at about 10lb boost max - as applied should net 20% gains with stock compression. I thought reliability would still be important so only looking at moderate settings. Still researching and now keeping an eye on that College project to see what
they do - since part of their requirement is reliability for their project car. - just two cents - well rubbed ;0)

Does anyone have any advice on what to look for when considering purchasing a 2000 or 2001 used Blast? What are your opinions on new vs. used? I am a novice and this is my first bike purchase. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Ignition module: Yahoo site has a posting with the part number 32942-02. For the Sportster and maybe the Blast. $250

Nine different curve adjustments. I wonder if any give an improvement on a bone-stock Blast.

Oh yeah, for "racing applications only". Usual liability disclaimer

I am fairly new to posting here, but have been reading for quite awhile. There seem to be lots of knowledgeble people here and I was wondering if I could ask an opinion.

I found a used 2000 Blast the other day being offered by a private individual. The price seemed almost too good to be true. It only had 3400 miles on it and had the sprocket recall work done. The owner had not heard of the rocker box gasket issues that I have read about here so obviously they haven't been replaced.

The bike had a few blemishes from a non-riding fall during a move. One turn signal was broken (I understand this is a common problem),the tank slightly scuffed, and the end of the shifter was broken. Both parts were already on order and would be fixed if I were to purchase it. The owner is ready to move to a bigger bike and is looking for a new home for this one.

This is my first bike and I am not sure how to evaluate a used bike. What sort of things should I look for? I was contemplating buying a new Blast, but buying used would make it a little easier on the wallet as well as lessen the trauma should I drop it while practicing in the parking lot. Thanks in advance for your opinions or suggestions.

Is there a way to search for topics within sections on this site?

As far as what to look for, it is pretty much the same as most bikes. You have already checked for major lay downs, and other problems. See if the previous owner has any records of what has been done in the past. Regular maintenance records usually mean it has been cared for pretty well.
Also and as many people posting mods here this will sound odd, but take a pass if it has been modified unless you know the PO well and he can tell you exactly what has been done.
If it is a really good price, as you say, and it looks good to you, then see if you are comfotable on it, if so then go for it. They are a great learner bike, a phenominal commuter bike, and taken care of, seem to be a fine bike for many miles.

Hope it helps.

Jim

Mapes: One great thing about the Blast, is that the paint isn't actually paint. The color is cast-in, solid through the Surlyn bodywork. A little polishing will have the scratched tank looking good as new. Keep it for a custom paint scheme or sell it on eBay. :) A set of bar ends for your handle bars will help ameliorate any parking lot droppages (save your grips, and levers).

Pull the spark plug; it should be clean; check the oil for proper level and cleanliness. Make sure it starts and runs smoothly.

Thanks everyone for all of the info. and advice.

Jim: Didn't think about the maintenance record.
That's a good idea. I'm not sure about the recommended maintenance on the Blast.

Xgecko: Thanks for the Search link. I figured there was one, but wasn't able to locate it. I will check out the Yahoo page as well.

Blake: What exactly are bar ends? Thanks for the info on polishing. The scuffs weren't too bad. I'm sure a little polishing will work. I'll let you know if it works out.

Had some bodywork for sale. Full retail for a complete set minus the rear hugger fender but including the license plate bracket will run you about $130 at the dealership. Might be a premium for some colors.
