Drat... (about the RR1000) was hoping to build a custom frame out of ChroMoly like the RR1K, hopefully to make a lighter/stiffer frame that would take 17" rims and a Penski shock mounted vertical (have a Penski on the jap bike, great rebound!) I'll have to kick the ideas around a bit harder on the puter first I guess.. I've read some info about people using a custom dirt-tracker frame (can't remember the make), but what I really want to do is lighten the frame and make it stiff enough to throw around on a short track ( a couple of buddies and I have hopes of setting up a 125/250cc course in the area.. the Blast isn't fast enough to compete with the big bikes in an all out sprint, but it's really fun to race against the Aprilias, you just smoke 'em senseless in the corners with all the torque) Oh well, dreams dreams dreams... Oh yes, just a warning for those in the ELP/LCruz area: DO NOT SEND/PURCHASE/ETC ANYTHING to do with you Buell to BARNETTE HD/Buell. Unfortunately I purchased mine from them, and they've given me nothing but grief. Can't qoute you on the Las Cruzes store, but the one in El Paso royally passes wind. I've had my bike in 3 times for shedualed maintanences, and the bills were outrageous, on the third time ( can't prove it, so don't take my word..)the bike's rear tire was "sabotaged" and was given the only option of purchasing a new one at over 250$USD. It was the last time I've ever set foot on the grounds. (wandered over to my local Kawa dealer, and he mounted a new 130/90-16 from an older N250 for 75 bucks, guess where I'm buying tires from now on..) That said... If you need anything, ANYTHING from Buell in TX, Call up Sporttwin ( Buell of Dallas ), They Fr*ggen Kick *ss! I've never met a bunch of nicer people that actually know what's going onwith the bike instead of purely guessing. All my parts come from them, no exceptions. (Well, maybe tires.. ) Enough, off my soap box.. 42RWHP? Because it's obtainable with little effort.... and I'm lazy ... We'll save the 65RWHP for when I'm done with the '69 Cougar. -=[ DStorm ]=- |

EZBlast - to lighten the weight on the bike try smaller portions and more exercise. Sorry, couldn't resist... Good question: how does one cut weight w/o losing structural integrity? Rear-sets, air box are easy ones but the rest, I don't know. |

Rearsets and airbox are the obvious places to start, and the cheapest. Muffler is another place you can save some weight, the stocker is a load. Anything else, like aluminum swing arm, or custom rear subframe, you're starting to get into real money and fabricating parts. IIRC I saw an interview with Erik Buell where he stated the entire chassis was barely 200 lbs. So the motor is nearly half the weight on a stock Blast. I guess if you lopped off a cylinder that would bring the weight down. . . oh, right, never mind |

My thoughts - An alum. handle bars, pared down lighting all around, changing front light and wind screen to ultra-lights of a differing less expensive type, paring the back end and rear frame arms, inner fender/guard goes, and front fender pared down to a third of size, air-box, this nets about thirty lbs, then your into money with the next steps. Missing something? Ideas? |

I just seem to have received a Christmas present from my blast today on my way to work, I thought I was catching some rocks on my ankle/calf but it turns out that the stinging I was feeling was oil on my leg. It looks like it took me about 6500 miles to kill the rocker box gasket. Is this something I should take to the dealer (I have changed the oil and the crankcase oil myself) or should I do this myself. I am sure I will have to remove the tank but what else is involved in the fix. I have to be able to do this in one day as this is my daily driver (I can't leave it with my dealer for days). Anyone who has done this please e-mail me the details of the fix and parts # for the METAL gasket. THX DOC |

Silly questions but I can't remember them. I also checked te Buell site and my service manual to no avail... 1) What is the diameter of the headlamp? I'm almost sure it's 8", but better to be safe than sorry. 2) What diameter are the handle bar ends? I believe they use the standard Harley 1", but my Crossroads Lowered look smaller (about 7/8"). Rational - Found some 36mm / 38mm steel clip on's in both 1" and 7/8" variety for aprox 70$USD. I love the Crossroads, but they feel overly bulky and aren't quite to my taste (plus their pricey, almost too much to warrent purchasing again for a spare set). I figure spread the 36mm a bit and they'll clamp right on Merry Christmas everyone! Spend some quality time with those you love. I got me a fist full 'o dollars and a bunch of bad ideas... (Come're P-3, we's gonna spend some quality time take'n you apart - again!) :D -=]DStorm[=- |

Does anybody know if Buell has changed the dreaded "paper gasket" for the 2002 line-up. |

Buellmeister, If you're talking about the paper rocker cover gasket then I would assume so. But not knowing when the one-piece metalized gaskets hit the assembly floor and not knowing how far in advance they build the engines up for production, I'd venture to guess that maybe perhaps in most likelyhood up to a reasonable degree of certainty that it is feasible that at least some if not all currently assembled 2002 model year Blasts could have the newer gasket already in them. Note, I said "could". Ask your local dealership, they won't know either. |

Here's what I say about Blasts and metal gaskets... When my THIRD engine was being put in the new metal gaskets had just been announced. I asked the dealer to install one while the engine was out. I volunteered to pay for the part and labor. They refused to do it. The moral of that story: Don't ask your dealer sh1t. I don't believe they have any respect for Blastards. -Saro |

Cousin of my recently sold '69 Mach 1, I say! http://members.rennlist.com/pinkpank/Mach1.JPG Joey, what happened when you put synth tranny fluid in your cars trans?!? Or did you put synth OIL in it?!? Do tell - I've been using synth tranny fluid for years and years (RedLine racing) with no ill effects. Oliver '00 Blast (and a bundle of 944 Turbos) |

Blake: Thanks, that made my life one step simpler... PinkPank: That was probably the nicest way I could say that, I have no idea what filters the board is using and I decided not to test them . Like the Mustange, did it have the 429Boss in it? Mine's got a ways to go... Saro: Dead on, Dealers are near useless (hey, they sold the bike, so they can't be all bad...) Continuing to dismantle P-3... need dynamite to get those darn upside down "v" footrests off though... -=]D_Storm[=- |

The largest I tried were 150/70-16 from AVON, and they were wayyyyy to big. The only way you could get a 140 in there is to have less than a 40mm sidewall ( or chop and reweld the cross bar). I love my 130/90, it's V rated and sticks great. It's all I can afford though until they drop price on a custom swingarm (I've seen +1000$ for one!) Wish they did make some slicks for it though.... On the front I thought the largest possible was a 110/90 ( I've heard a 120/70 might go, but who makes that size on a front? Your front is a large as your rear tire? That's just silly..) Wish the P-3 would take 17" rims, it would give you so many more options... -=]D_Storm[=- (and while I'm wishing, I wanna pony, new matchbox car, and a Red Rider BB rifle) |

Huh you put a 130/90 in the rear??? I rubbed, on my 1st swingarm, at 120/90. I haven't tried to fit anything else in there since. Mind you I likethe Pireli's so unless there is a major difference I'm not likely to change for a bit. I'll be buying 2-3 rear tires in Feb to ship with my bike to Japan unless something realy interesting comes along |

Dust- You'll shoot yer eye out! On the conversion front, I just initiated divorce proceedings, so everything is on hold right now for the Blast. On the other hand, since I'll be single and won't have anyone to either support or explain to, the mods on the bike will be easier. Hell, I can even buy another one if I want to. Just need to find a place with a garage, since she's getting the house. Anyone got a bike-friendly rental in Philly available? |

That's definitely getting there...I think the best mod to the things is the conversion to use the 17" Buell wheels/brakes. It just doesn't seem like a real sportbike without real rubber/wheels. I want to buy another Buell in a couple years (too broke at the moment) to race...it'll either be a heavily modified blast or a lightly modified Lightning. |

The stick shift on my Horizon likes 5w30, or something like that. I forget. It's been a while. Synthetic oil made the synchronizers so slippery that I couldn't shift into any gear untill the gears were running the same speed. Previously, someone told me to use gear oil, which made it impossible to shift on a cold Alaska winter morning until the whole thing warmed up... What does this have to do with the Blast!? Since we're talking tires, I'm on a Pirelli, stock Blast! size. Without modification, what are my choices for a rear tire that'll last a long while? Final question: How do I set the timing on my Blast!? I don't have a manual, and probably won't get one for a month or two, but I need to do some maintenance. I found everything else I need to know for that here. Thanks! |

XGecko - yep, A Dunlop K550 130/90R16, I did some checking around and found out that the K330 is only made for Buell, they aren't available for purchase from the company, thought the K550 is damn near nuts on (the tread pattern is different, but the tire is wayyyyy more sticky). To get it in, I had to grind off the metal shock protector, and even then, it's snug. With the tire up to speed, you've got maybe an 1/8" between tire and swingarm, close to a 100MPH that gaps is about as wide as a folded piece of paper. No rubbing though Maybe to sticky, I'm still running the stock front, and I can feel the give in a hard turn. Front gets squirly, rear is locked on. Wish I could put a gash in the front, a K550 110/90R16 would probably lock everything in super. I wanted to try the Metzler/Pirelli, but the shops down here don't carry them (and I haven't ridden on them sooooo.... *insert nervous feeling here*) I'm used to the slide of the Dunlops, and love Michalins until about 1600-2000 miles, then everything goes to hell in a handbasket(tires won't grip anything!). Avons are nice but pricy, oh well. "I fear change, and will keep my bushes", works for me. Philly - Sorry to hear about the troubles, it'll all workout for the best though. And darnit, I don't care if I shoot my eye out... Joey - You reallllllllly need the manual to do the timing, if you have a lightgun it's easy, but most home garages (mine included) don't have one, so you'll have to do it manually. Spend the 40$ on the manual, it's the first thing I should have bought for the P-3. Things to think about.... talked with Airtech the otherday, the YRZ-300 fairing mod could PoSsIbLy fit, though lots of effort to make it work. Wonder why no one makes a full/half fairing for the P-3... and why are BMW Boxer 1/4 fairings so darned expensive! -=] D_Storm [=- ....still want 17" rims... |

Well all things considered I'm rather happy with the Pireli's, though I have thought of cutting that damn shock mount guard just so I can use 120/90's (a much more common tire size) I may do that once I'm off the warrenty. I've done a search on 4 diff engines and i can't find anything on a YRZ or YZR 300. The Idea of a full fairing is intriguing but at the moment I'm still waiting to cut off my rear subframe. As for the 17incher (damn, that sounds dirty) Crossroads is supposed to be working on a kit. |

Doh - sorry about that, it's the RZ350-YZR conversion, keep in mind I was only looking at the front fairing, the tail is weak... I hear ya about that rear subframe, but if the 17" mod kit is going to cost what I think it will, I can't imagine the cost on the subframe. ((NOTE to VENDORS: Come on!! Only a few private companies making mods for this great inexpensive bike? Whatz wrong wit cho?)) We NEED a definative racing class for this bike, ala ProThunder etc... mayhaps a new Supermono set? -=]D_Storm[=- |

Actually the Subframe shouldn't be that bad. I'll do the design work myself (actually I've done about half of it on paper already and the other half is in my head) I figure I can find a welder on the KittyHawk (my next command) who'd be willing to trade service for beer/money/whatever. BTW there is a racing class though the bike must look stock (airbox/fairings etc) except for controls. we'll see how that shakes out |

There are a couple of race classes the Blast is legal for. The AHRMA production singles class looks interesting, but i don't think a blast would be competitive due to the rules which require a production muffler, stock motor, and the 16" rims. The 28hp Blast would be competeing against 40hp 5 valve yamaha singles and 55 hp KTM Dukes. CCS/Formula USA just created a race class called ultra-lightweight sportsman the Blast! is legal for and probably very competitive....just has to have the production frame and part numbers on the cases, heads and cylinders: single cylinder push rod 4 stroke production frame up to 550cc. also legal to swap to 17" wheels for that class....could be a lot of fun. |

hi everyone... happy new year! Anyone have any tips on front rotor replacement? It looks real straight-forward from the manual, but I've learned that some of these jobs are not as easy as they could be. Also, should I go ahead and replace the brake shoes at the same time no matter what their condition? (They look alright at 3300 miles) Thanks, and enjoy the road (if it's warm enough for you). |
