I bought a Blast for my fiancée as a starter bike... with it eventually being passed down to my son. I just can't think of having ANY bike without a tach... but with rev limiters I guess the manufacturers think they are no longer needed. She is afraid she will over rev it... and mess up the motor even though I keep telling her the rev limiter will prevent that from happening... so at that she tends to lug the engine and short shift... and generally keep the revs way too low. TO THE POINT... can anyone recommend a tachometer for the Blast that does not require any modifications to work on a single cylinder? |

Thunder Product makes a small self contained inexpensive electronic tach - I have velcro holding mine on the bike - grounded to handle bars bolt, and the lead wire I have following the fuel vent hose down and around and then wraped to the spark plug wire. There is about a 2 sec. second lag says the mfgr - I really don;t notice it but I guess if you were depending upon it for serious racing - drag or track -that could be a problem, but sine I use it for the very reasons you mention - as a reference - it works for me. http://www.thunderproducts.com/index.htm They don't advertise it on line it was mentioned in their brochure of products when I ordered the Dial A Jet - but you can find their number there and talk to them yourself about it - about the same price as a Timex and will probably last as long - though mines still ok after 4mo - lol - broke the wire installing the second - will fix and reinstall - one of those Simpson moments -Doh! - lol - got Thump?! http://www.second-look.com/html/shiftlight.html First time to post. I found this neat light that just might fix your problem. I don't know if it will work on a single but it should. Paticus Maximus |

There is a tach made by Autometer for Jr. Dragsters. It is for a single cylinder Briggs, 12 volt DC system. They come in 2 5/8" and 3 3/4" models. www.jegs.com has them for 99.99 in their Jr. Dragster section. I am going to order one and see or maybe I could look at one closer on Autometers web site. When I get my new shop manual maybe it will have a wiring diagram of the ignition system in it. I hope that helps. |

"There is a tach made by Autometer for Jr. Dragsters...." I bought one of the AutoMeter Tachs (Model 6652), and so far, I can't get to work. I've hooked it up per instructions, exactly like I had the Drag Specialties tach I'm replacing (which worked fine, except the DS tach is for 2-cylinder engines and indicates RPM/2.) FWIW, the instructions for the AutoMeter tach say "Made to operate with Briggs & Stratton ignition coils only." If anbody's got an idea for a solution, let's hear it. |

Maybe another solution: http://www.sendec.com/meters/ The cheapies (around $40) go up to 7,000 rpm, which should work with stock and slightly modified Blasts. If you need a higher limit, they sell some that go to 16,000 rpm. I haven't tried any of these, but they look like they *should* work. Anyone wanna be a guinea pig?

Looks like those SenDec tachs won't work, either. Their specs say "Display update time: 1.5 seconds", which means display will lag actual RPM by 1.5 seconds. |

Here are 2 tachs from Dakota Digital The Motorcycle version 249.95 http://www.dakotadigital.com/Detail.cfm/-/Category=66/PartNumber=HLY-3027/produc t.htm The Car version 169.95 http://www.dakotadigital.com/Detail.cfm/-/Category=156/PartNumber=SLX-02-7/produ ct.htm These both work with 1 to 15 cylinders. The motorcycle version is supposed to be more rugged than the car version, other than that they are supposed to be the same unit. Documents are online for the motorcycle version. I have not tried either of these items, but they look like they may work with a blast.

Finally a Tach for a Blast that works! http://www.westach.com/ - The credit all goes to my buddy Sean - aka - kaveman for getting it done! White face - chrome bezel - 2ctau8-2z-cw Black face - chrome bezel - 2ctau8-2z-c Black face - black bezel - 2ctua8-2z Auotmeter part number 2203 mount kit for his installation. you could paint it powder black to match the dash I'd suggest a little soft foam between flyscreen and gauge, but Sean says its fine. The important part is it works! I'm sure we will all find different ways to mount it! Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ edited by ezblast on March 23, 2004 |

Direct quote from Sean - "As for mods... Well it's a direct hookup, +12, GND, Signal from the negative side of the coil, and the light curcuit. Westach (call for any other questions - very helpfull - EZ) doesn't have any mounting hardware, so I ended up getting an Autometer mount kit #2203, bending the bracket a bit, and making a few holes in the speedo dash." (he sealed them in expoxy to protect and keep dash water proof) . Thats about it! Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

Is someone offering those? If not, let me know ... I could whip those up in no time ... but I don't want to step on anyone's toes. |

Sean is working with the guy now, I don't want to step on sponsor toes so I have'nt mentioned the creator yet, but when they get it all straightened out, getting a point of contact, etc. - then they will be available. It seams Sean and a guy he knows already makes dashes like that for X1, M2, etc. and sells them on Ebay, but they want to make it official first - and for a hobby business stuff like that takes time - but like I said - as soon as he get some more made, and is ready to do business (he's also making a billit version of just the Dash alone), I'll leave a point of contact in the links to stuff you can't find here and probably with the posted pics - lol - but I thought you'd like a peak of the prototype mounted and working! So the Mystery of the Tach for the Blast is almost solved! Gt - JBOTDS! EZ |

This company sells a digital tach www.northerntool.com. Just put in keyword tachometer. I bought one for a quad but have not hooked it up yet so I cannot attest to its function. If i test it on the Blast I'll report the results. |

Its red - lol - the funny thing is these tachs are hand manufactured - you'd think they would notice that the needle matches the backround and therefore would be invisible. Its not like a machine put it together - jeez! (time for that magic marker! - lol) GT - JBOTDS! EZ |
