She is not .....but I've had a couple dandy by-products of the new entitled "you can't flunk me because I'm disadvantaged" folks. I accept the difficulties people through, though out time and civilized history, have faced based on ethnicity, religion and the myriad of things, now cited as "causes" I do .... However .... Refuse to count among their number stupidity and gross laziness. I flunked a fellow with 4 degrees, one in law, who tried his " you have to..." Line on me. Timing is interesting as I am dispatching 2 students tomorrow when my letter will hit the Dean of Academic Affairs. I've attached some supporting documents including the only 87 word " term paper" I've ever seen. I've a great reputation on campus. I send students out armed with REALLY practical and useful knowledge in law and construction science. But, I tolerate no bullshit under the cloak of academia. But hey ..... That's what Columbia gets for hiring a motorcycle riding ... Ex-Marine Construction worker as a Professor, right? | ||

Probably a case of the student being used to a high school that has 80% black population. Then going to a college where they are no longer the majority and can no longer go around bullying everyone into doing what they want. Try being white in that situation and see what kind of trauma you're exposed to... | ||

This has been going on of at while. I was a student at Columbia in the 80s and had to wade through the protests in front of Low library to get to SEAS (the engineering school). One day as I was passing through I had several black kids yelling 'racist' at me (and any other white kids on their way to class). I asked one of them why they were calling me that when they didn't know anything about me. They responded that I was a racist because I had benefited from institutional racism all my life. So here we were at the same school, my parents were draining their bank account to keep me there for 2 years so I could get my engineering degree and I was working my butt off. They were hanging out in the quad harassing people and majoring in African American studies (a degree that as far as I could tell was created only to give folks an academic façade to support their version of racism). So who was the racist, and whose presence at that academic institution was evidence of institutional racism? It is probably me for questioning any of this. The culture at the ivy league colleges (and now unfortunately at most US universities) represents a dung hole of PC propaganda. I think most folks would be better off going to a good technical school and getting some skills for real employment. (Message edited by pjd2ss on December 11, 2015) | ||

Having worked with recent graduate engineers in engineering for the past 15 years or so in NASCAR, you statement about a good technical background is well based. Several of the graduates, while excellent in theory, had no clue how to apply the theory into practical utilization. YRMV | ||

When I hire new mechanical engineers, I like to discuss their hobbies and interests during interviews. I will consider a person with hobbies and interests based on mechanical activities like hot rods, motorcycle performance, aviation, machining etc above others. They tend to make the best hands on type. We have recently hired a number of ex-military completing their degrees through GI benefits. We have found them to be to excellent engineers with an abundance of mechanical and life skills that allows them to get up to speed quickly. | ||

Hahahaha . . . . very little traumatizes me. But, I confess, of all the brushes I've had with academia . . . . my two most excruciating experiences were both the Ivy League schools I graduated from. Seems like the further up the academic food chain one goes . . . the further detached one becomes from reality. The better half . . the Rhodes Scholar product of Harvard . . . doesn't even know there **IS** reality. :-) P.S. - I **may** be traumatized re-reading a final exam today after a student wrote suggesting that their "burning desire" for an "A" and the amount of time they put in essentially made "anything less than an A the equivalent of total failure". You see it all. |
