I have been admiring Buells from a distance for some time now and have really been enjoying this site. I am thisclose to buying a new 2000 bike. Now I read that an S2 is the best of the Buells and I am saying " Maybe new is not the best idea" Help!

Antonio L - Not to stand in for Court but I can hear it now.

"All Buell's are great. The M2 is one of the best buys in motorcycling. The S2 is one of the best Buell's ever. The S1 is one of the best handling motorcycle's produced. The S3 is one of the best touring cycles that will scratch as well."

not to put words in Court's mouth..but...THEY'RE ALL GOOD!

Jason:

Hey . . . you want my job? Hehehehe..... Thanks, I could have done no better.

I've yet to meet a Buell I don't like. Each, like my kids, has their individual beauty and grace. I confess that my personal opinions are heavily influenced by emotion and the "zeit geist" at the time particular bikes arrived and made their mark on Buell history.

Antonio, I can answer your question. But, to do so credibly I need to know a bit more about how, where and (most importantly) WHY you ride.

I owe someone a compro twinxt the S-2 and the RS/RSS-1200. Tell me just a bit about your expectations and I'll use it as a reason to do a brief comparison of some various models.

No way Court. I'm not diplomatic enough to keep people around. You do a great job of being informative, interesting, and a good read.

I live on the South Shore of Long Island and would do most of my riding around here. That means flat roads with traffic locally and twisty two lane roads when I go to the North Shore. I would also do some riding through upstate New York and New England. WHY I ride is to emotionally remove myself from reality for a while and meld with the machine, the road and the surroundings. I LOVE the pull of acceleration off the line, the distinctive "clunk" of an upshift followed by more pull. I LOVE braking hard into a corner and after downshifting matching revs perfectly as I release the clutch and accelerate, allowing me to feel that pull again. I love leaning in. I love going for what I call a "genius ride" at night, most often on Ocean Parkway which, as the name describes, is a straight stretch of about 20 miles along the Atlantic. The lightly traveled road allows me to do some serious thinking without upshifting, downshifting or leaning. Mostly I ride because I love to smile.

Man....you hit the nail on the head. What a poetic and concise way to put the riding experience. You have got to get a Buell. Court we Italians can turn a phrase. Not to shabby. Looking forward to you joining our Buell family.
Goodluck on what ever ride you pick.

Court,

I'm interested in the differences that the Harley involvement had on Buell (other than the influx of capitol)...I haven't the funds to purchase an S2, nevermind an RS/RSS, but I am very curious.

Antonio:

Ocean Parkway is the one that the Nassau County cops (members of the local VFR Club whom Erik and I haunted in a prior life) were going to close for me on a visit to New York in 1996.

I know the roads you are talking about and have one word for you. . . .

S-2

End of discussion.

Have you ridden one ? If not, I can provide you with a "demo ride" you'll not forget.

The "newer" Buells are more "flickable" I'll explain why in another chapter more "hooligan" in nature. The S-2 is the kinesthetic embodiment of PRECISELY the riding you described. You ride for your head not your body, ergo the S-2. The converse would dictate the 2000 M-2.

There . . . that was easy.

Court,

If you have a chance to shoot a photo of the "buckets" and cable setup at the carb, I would appreciate it. It would help to see it before I take on the task myself.

Thanks! Scott, '00 S3T with the now discontinued color of Amazon Green

Antonio:

Check your e-mail. I sent you a shot of the poster from when I took an S-2 for a little ride round the USA. Great detail of the bike.

I also sent you a snap of Dave Lorman's S-3 to help you see the differences.

Enjoy,
Court

Can we seriously have a Dealership recalled? Three weeks for a gas cap is a bit extreme, especially since I paid in advance. Anyone have any suggestions? I love the bike, hate the parts department here in a very large metropolitan area in the southwestern US. (They also claim not to have brake pads in stock as well. Got them next day from another shop, via UPS.)

TIA

Ken Hageman.

Ken:

I have a spare gas cap I can send you to use until yours comes, if you need.

Please summarize your parts experiece (dates, location, part and how long you waited) and e-mail to me.

Brake pads is a no brainer. Particularly since the rears are the same as many other bikes.

Thanks for the pictures. You say that the M2 is the "converse" of the S2. Please expound on that. I was originally looking toward a new S3 or S3T but swayed over toward a new M2. A sales guy informed me that the M2 is the same frame as the S3. He also said although the M2 has a carb and is 10 HP less, the power comes on at a lower RPM which would be better for the Long Island type riding. This seemed to make sense. The real kicker is the price difference. I can get a new (2000) M2 for $7100 and the best price I have found for a 2000 S3T is about $10,500. The info you sent regarding the S2 is real food for thought. The S2 does look sweet.

Guys:

Please be patient.

2 MAJOR projects to complete at work in order to leave and about 300# of gear to pack, dogs to warehouse and a 78 year old boarder to get siutated prior to departure.

I'll TRY to get pics of "buckets" late tonight. The S-2 / M-2 compro will likely be done on the plane enroute to Utah.

Thanks !

Antonio L - What the salesman told you about the M2 and S3 is true. The M2 has stock sportster cams which have MONSTER torque from practically idle to 5000-5500 rpm. My S3 (98) has the same cams as the S1 of that year and the torque is there but not in prodigious amts like in the M2. The S3/S1's were more of a "keep on the boil" kind of bike as opposed to a "point and shoot" type. I like the S3 but I miss the M2 torque so much I'm thinking of going with the smaller cams.

My son and I enjoy our Buells. I have a 2000 S3T and he has the 2000 M2. When we do roll-ons from
3000 RPM, 2nd gear, the S3 will slowly pull away. About 5 or 6 bike lengths up to 125 MPH. I shift at 6000, he shifts at 6500. If we start from any
where less than 3000 RPM, he will jump ahead for
a bike length or so until the S3 catches and passes the M2. They are both stock for now, but
we plan on souping in the future.
Enjoy, enjoy.
