I have a 2005 XB12Scg with a dip stick which looks like Tim's picture. The design of the dip stick changed when the swing arm design was changed. I think this was in 2006. The later dip sticks have a different top.

I always measure the oil in a measurite cup with gradations in ounces. On my 2005 XB12 it takes exactly 4 oz from the lower registration to the top mark. This is just like the manual states above.

I thought this was a small amount of oil but the manual proved correct.

Repeating:

Have they not run a leakdown test?

A "compression" test will help characterize the relative integrity of each cylinder to the other, but is less helpful in identifying the actual cause of or presence of any cylinder/head oiling issues. Your 165psi compression test result, if applicable to each cylinder is within the acceptable range.

You need leakdown tests performed on each cylinder, on a hot engine.

Blake, I wasn't ignoring that. I just don't know the answer and I will have to ask them when I call and tell them not to deliver the bike on Tuesday. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. I also appreciate everybody else who is chiming in!

I love my Buell, but as I said this issue angers me and disappoints me! I just want to get it fixed, whatever it takes, so that my bike is good come spring time!

OK I just got off the phone with Buell customer service. The guy's name was Matt. He took all my information and said that he will contact the dealership tomorrow and see what he can come up with. My fingers are crossed!

My 07 Bolt was using some with most of it going into the airbox and over the IAT.

Did the reroute to can thing and the consumption seems to have reduced and no smoke on startup with a crisper feel to the throttle.

Just out of curiousity . . . I see we have been discussing this for over a month.

When did you FIRST call Buell Customer Service?

That's the first step toward:

  • 1) Determining if there IS a problem.
  • 2) Bringing about a solution.

Let us know what you hear. They have some very knowledgeable tech folks.

I figured the dealership could handle it. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and that is why I didn't call Buell right away. I didn't think that I needed to contact them and I hoped it wouldn't come to this. The dealership has been great to me except in regards to this oil consumption issue. I know with cars and bikes and any other vehicle, diagnosis is not always easy so I gave them a couple of chances. But after three times of not finding anything, I was just too aggravated to not call Buell.

As far as this thread being a month old, I started this thread after I received the bike after the second visit for oil consumption. It's now at the dealership for the third time. They have not had the bike for a month...yet.

I was told that I will get a phone call tomorrow and I am holding Matt to that. I hope this gets resolved as fast and as painless as possible.

"this issue angers me"

Preach mode on: : ]

Some relative perspective may help. If you were a non-Arab living near Darfur, Sudan, you'd be concerned about whether or not you are soon to be murdered and/or your wife, sisters, mother, and daughters, as they venture forth miles from your pitiful refuge camp shack to find firewood to keep your family from freezing to death, are brutally gang raped by roving bands of genocidal militant Arabs.

It's just a motorcycle, a luxury, something for fun and enjoyment. If it ever causes you anger, get rid of it immediately and take drastic measures to simplify your life and gain proper perspective.

"Frustrate" maybe. "Anger" no way.

Am I crazy?

Easy for you to say!

I admit to having a bad temper. It's partially genetic. After all, I am a red-headed mix of Irish and German. Funny thing is that even with that heritage I'm not a drinker. The other part of my temper is driven by legal, prescribed steroids. Unfortunately for me there's no going "off" of them unless medicinal technology progresses. I sure hope it does!

For me it's the "little" things in life that anger me more than anything else and I'm not sure why. You should see me when I lose a game of Madden 08 on my XBox 360... Now I'm sure you're thinking "spoiled brat," but on the contrary I grew up in the lower middle class.

Yes, I know motorcycles are luxury items. I'm glad that I can afford one. I've worked very hard to get to this point. I am also glad I live in the best country in the world where I do not have to worry about being murder by my own government. Conspiracy theorists would beg to differ, but that's another thread that I chose to not visit.

Anyway, when I purchase a new item I expect it to work without hassle, especially when it's as expensive as a new automobile or motorcycle.
/end of my lecture :P

Good thing you didn't get ahold of me in customer service. I used to hang up on folks and tell them to call back when they could act like a grown up.

I admit to having diminished tolerance.

I think you misunderstood me. I have a bad temper in general. I'm usually nice to people if they are respectful towards me. The Buell customer service rep was respectful towards me and I did not get angry. I told him my story and he said he'd find out what was going on.

>>>I didn't get a call from Buell customer service today like promised.

That is disappointing.

One of the basic tenants of quality customer service is to keep commitments.

There were times I knew I was not going to be able to get a customer an answer quickly so I'd make promises I could deliver on like "I'll call you with an update at 3:40pm tomorrow". I'd call come hell or high water . . .

I knew damn well I wouldn't have an answer but I DID make the call. Sometimes I'd do this several times but I wanted to customer to be "trained" to be able to rely on what I told them and to believe what I said.

In addition . . .generally the conversations "softened" the nature of the interaction and broadened the available solutions I had at my disposal to solve the problem.

You news is particularly disconcerting in view of two recent cases I handled.

Keep us posted.

A bad temper is genetic? Doubtful. Learned from one's family? Absolutely. In the end, how we behave is absolutely almost always our own choice. We choose to be angry.

BTW, how's the angry temper working for you? It never did much of anything for me. That said, I don't much care for folks who don't express any passion at all.

If they don't call, pick up the phone and call them back. Sheesh.

Avoid consternation by not expecting perfection in others and in things/stuff.

Gads, am I channeling Court? I can fly?

From what I understand it hasn't yet been determined whether or not tempers are hereditary. I believe they are. My temper helps and it hurts. Anyway, this is not about my temper, it's about my Buell.

I will "pick up the phone and call them back" if I don't hear from Buell tomorrow. The thing is it's disappointing. Plus, I loose confidence and start to lose trust in people when they promise something to me, but don't come through. I, like Court, will return somebody's call on the day that I promise whether or not I actually have any updates.

>>>>>how's the angry temper working for you? It never did much of anything for me.

I've got two fun stories that came from my reaction to folks' tempers . . . like I said, I have little patience.

One of the funniest stories that still gets told around Buell is the time I took the call from an irate customer . . . told him to "shut up" and that "the bike's fine, you're up and let me tell you why"

As a stunned group of 3 engineers sat and watched I had a fascinating conversation with the guy as he came around to my way of thinking. . . started to listen and we got his problem solved.

He's a happy Buell owner to this day . . . 10 years later.

If you ever happen to talk to me on a problem . . . hold that temper in check or be ready for a BIG surprise.

: )

Eager to hear if they call you back.

This might help your anger.
Hold your breath and lie on the floor kicking.
THAT really gets your point across and the people that have children recognize immediately, you mean business!

Or maybe get that new DNA scan and see if the ANGER gene is dominant.

I've got two fun stories that came from my reaction to folks' tempers . . . like I said, I have little patience.

I'd say that little patience towards people and short tempers are directly related. They may not be one in the same, but I'd say that they're directly related.

With a response like that I'd say that you also have a temper. I usually hold my temper back when dealing with people. There is a certain point where lies aggravate me beyond control and I show a bit of my temper. I've learned to be less mean, though. Plus, I realize some guy on the phone has done nothing wrong to me. It's not his fault that my bike has issues. He didn't even know about the issues until I informed him. Now if he doesn't return my call like he promised...well that's a different story entirely and there is no excuse for that. Anyway, inanimate objects usually feel my wrath instead of people. It's not easy being me. : D

Oh and My DNA reads like this:
Good
Bad
Good
Bad
Good
Evil
Great

Something along those lines.

Oh BTW I didn't do it. It wasn't me. I swear! ;)

And when did this turn into The Dr. Phil Show or Intervention? :P

DNA scans are a bad topic in my house.

My wife. . . arguably much smarter than I. . read in some newspaper about this service where you send your dogs DNA sample in and they record it, presumably to locate lost dogs, and tell you the dogs precise pedigree.

I, of course, made some fun of her.

Well. . . she told me she needed a picture of Jack to send with the sample. Anyway . . I dressed him up in striped jail house looking garb, postioned him in a faux "doggie line up" and sent a fake reply to her that "we've run the background on your dog and he's wanted in 4 counties and 3 paternity suits".

I'm sleeping in the yard.

OK so I called Buell again and Matt went home sick today. The lady I talked to told me that the note says that he did put a call into the dealer, though. She's going to tell him to return my call on Monday. Fingers still crossed!

*We will now return the the regularly scheduled programming. Thanks for your patience.*
