Comments Please: Local dealer is offering to trade me even on my 94 Sporty 1200(< 9800mi) for a 99 M2 with 1000mi. Asking price on the M2 is 8k with 1000 rebate(ha ha) Read that 7k(after fun and games of a silly rebate) Should I do the deal? I am concerned about the M2 being a good long term scoot. I've read several postings and am starting to get cold feet |

carl, Also sort of depends on your local market. How fast and how much will your Sporty sell for locally? Otherwise, if it were me, the dealer would already own the XL. |

You'll love the Buell. Most owners are too busy riding to complain. The few that can complain do and loudly. Great rock solid bikes. It'll leave your sportster like it was tied to a stake. 97 Buell M2 - 9500 miles - no probs |

Thanks for the comments! I believe that everyone knows why the Sporty is got to go. I rode the M2 and it was really the best of both worlds. The smoothness of my BMW's and with the parts availablity of my HD. I've considered selling it outright, but overall, I'd only net an additional 500.00 or so. The Sporty was a dissapointment to say the least. Bought from a local dealer, no test rides allowed. First mistake. Came with drag pipes(second mistake) that I've since replaced with Pythons, and a 2.2 gal tank(real big mistake). I've owned BMW R65, R90 and a K100 and the Sportster just did not have anywhere near acceptable handling or low end. M2 has the handling. One problem that I did notice with the M2 is that Neutral is really hard to find. Not real happy with the controls(turn switches are bad--Sporty has better), but the rest of M2 is right up there. |

Buy the '99 M2 ... I have one and it's a terrific bike. Yeah, it had a few issues to work through, but it wasn't a big deal, and now that they're taken care of, it's a solid bike. AW |

Carl: Two comments....... FIRST: Average retail on your Sporty is $6,860. Ergo, the "deal" is sound. SECOND: The 1999 M-2 is a fabulous bike and you can expect a plesant ownership experience. Downside to all this is that as you accumulate miles the act of continuous smiling can induce hormonal changes to the skeletal/muscular system and there is a risk, determined to be 7 times greater than in folks who ate sugar pills while riding Ducatis, that you may start to look like Andy Speigal......anyway, I'd still do the deal. You can always cover your head with a bag, you can never recover the time lost riding a Sportster when a Buell stands in the wings..... Of course...that's just MY opinion ..... Court |

Carl, From someone with both: What's your riding environment? Crusing the city streets at 35-40? Or hitting twisties at 65+ w/ occasional highway trips? Yeah I put 22,000 miles on my Sporty in 4 years, but I put 14,000 on my Buell in 1 year,1month. The Buell is better >60, the Sporty is better <60. Where are you located? I've got a buddy looking for a Sporty, who (like me) wants to try cruisers first. If I had only money for 1 bike, I'd have an 98S1WL. If I had money for 4 I'd add a 00 CBR929RR... So then why do I recommend M2s to everyone I meet? Josh 99 S3T - his 96 Hugger 883/1200 - ours 00 Blast - hers |

"So then why do I recommend M2s to everyone I meet?" Because in reality it's all they will ever really need. It's a basic road bike, a great all around bike, does lots of stuff really well, no hassle maintenance. I won't go so far as to call it the Beetle of the Buell world, but hey, do what works for you. The Buell M2, everything the Sportster could have been, were it not for the cruiser mentality holding it back. mikej - '00 M2 (donning my nomex and hiding in the ditch) |

So many of the comments are echoing the exact thoughts that I've had regarding the M2. Especially the one from Mikej. "The sportster COULD have been...." My riding ranges from sedate highway to as many twisties as one can find here in St Louis.(Indirect answer to Josh.) One problem that the Sporty had is that I also have a beemer R65('79 - 650cc) that handles like a dream. Just wants to be pushed. Idles and runs great even in the middle of winter. I just got tired of throwing bucks at the sporty just to have average performance(but it still hesitates coming off the line or under 3000 rpms and don't drive until warm) I did the tale of the retail vs wholesale for both bikes and the bottom line is that it is a wash dollar wise. Maybe favors Sporty because of the Kuracan(can't spell) ISO grips/pegs and the Pythons. But I'm looking at the long term picture and M2 stands way out in front. Saturday is the big day. carl |

Carl! dude! you're in St Louis? And you're not on the SLAB section? Incidentally, my Sporty pulls idle-3000RPM much better than my Buell. I got a friend here in St Louis looking for a Sporty, just tell me you're not buying at Widman's. (just ping me or DAve for horror stories & we bought 4 bikes combined from 'em) Josh |

Feel free to e-mail me off-line Carl. Of course ... your mileage may vary when it comes to dealership relations. :) Get a Buell. I doubt you'll regret it. You may wonder why you rode a H-D so long though. DAve thunder1200@hotmail.com 99 Thunderbolt, 84 XR1000 (need a Sporty?) |

I'm too lazy to back up too far in this thread, but Carl from St. Louis is looking to buy a M2? Right so far? He's talking BMW, so he must be respectable, heck Carl, send me an email and I'll let you come ride mine around. I'm in St. Louis too. |

So why are all the St Louis folks showing up on Court's site? Shall we move this to the SLAB page before Court kicks us out? Who's gonna clean up this mess? ;) Josh "Damn, does Rt 40 have _any_ curves?" (who now rides 50 miles straight through St Louis to/from work everyday) |

Well I Got IT! Finalized the deal Saturday and after waiting for almost 3 hours for 1) the head guy to say yep we will take the Sporty 2)Redo the credit 'cause they got the wrong payoff from HD credit(all for $200.00)3) paperwork Then finally we got to leave. Jim W says yep we have enuf go juice to make the trip to St Pete. I let my son(My own wrench- mechanic with Coast Guard) drive the M2 home as I was still deaf from the Sporty ride. 2/3 of way home the M2 starts to cut out and stops running. Pull over and check the gas, looks like plenty, Switch over to reserve and fires right up. 1 mile later, same thing happens. Shake the tank and switch the petcock again and make it to Gas station. Filled up with 3+ gals of Premium and no more problems. This Morning I read in some archives about identical problems (all to the pickup being too tall) Didn't get to ride the M2 all weekend due to the rain and having family committments. But Still all smiles and looking forward to many hours on the ride. carl |

I always enjoy having St. Louisians hang around and those of you who have been around for several years will recall that one of my "Stories from the Road" was . . in fact. . .written about my travels/travails in St. Louis. The Botantical Gardens in St. Louis are w/o equal in the USA and among the 44 states I've stopped the Buell in STL is high on my list. Except, the one 2:15am fuel stop in East St. Louis, which technically is IL..... Washington County, to your South offers some of the best riding in the US and Highway 19 outta Hermann has served as my "de facto test site" for more than one Buell long before it met the eyes of John Q. Public. Another GREAT Buell tale was a cross county "gun shot" that was interrupted by a level 5 thunderstorm, my signature "steak and shake" escape stop only to get caught by the storm.....remind me to tell you the story about the cop 20 miles outta STL. Heck.....stay, I love the stories and STL is a dandy place for an M-2 ! Court |

To anonymous, There have been several recalls on 99 X1s. The latest has been for the fuel filter. 1. Do you have a black or a silver fuel filter(you should have a silver one now) There are other recalls but if this has been done then we can assume the others have been done Dan 99S3 |
