This Houston thing keeps getting rehashed about the home-20 today.

You got dumpsters or would I need to bring a lunch?

Court; no, not the usual rush hour crowd you captured there... But even the usual rush hour crowd seems unusual these days.

Even though I do my best to ignore the whole "siege" thing, it still manages to get to me once in awhile: standing in the subway car with about 150 other strap-hangers (one car should hold no more than 100); packed like sardines in a can - and it hits you: cyanide in this situation, and we're all dead in minutes.

But I'm having steak with friends tonight and building a loft this (long :) ) weekend. So I'm gonna be happy for what I can, while I can.

Well, you are not going to choose the fly through construction ?? It is a mismatching monstrum. We have already the elegant Eifeltower in Paris and the horrible Atomium in Brussels and that is enough. Second picture is fine. Wonderful even. Just that smart touch of elegance within tall but straight buildings.
Hans.

Hans:

It's going to get better than that, because the LMDC (www.renewnyc..com) lacks the authority to decide what goes there. Little problem is that developer Larry Silverstein has the balance of his 99 year lease on the ground. If YOU owned it and depended on it for your income wouldn't you want some say in what goes there?

Couple schools of thought. . . some folks are committed to the idea that building something TALLER there somehow proves to 19 dead people that we can "come back".

There are, as a realistic matter however, finite constraints on height related to evacuation (normal...I mean just like the fire drill stuff, not "disaster) and how high people will work.

MANY people left NYC following 9-11-01, including a lot fo Downtown and Wall Street firms. Friends with 2 of the larger ones confess they've been looking for a reason for the last 8 years.

The start of the trend was when it became as easy to cross the Hudson (wide river) as the East River (with it's 8 bridges and tunnels).

Now with tons of ferry service, PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) subway routes, etc. it's a different game. You can get from New Jersey (much lower taxes and commercial rents about 1/7th those here in the WORLD's most expensive city).

Another group of fruit loops cries out for 16 acres of peaceful placid memorial. You do the math at $1,000 per SF over 16 acres. If you owned it would you leave it a park? In addition, there's a group with years remaining on a committment to provide service, and receive income from, the 400,000 SF of retail space.

It's going to require "balance" and lots of open minds.

I, several weeks ago, in a fit of benevolence responded to an ad for employment with the LMDC. It was about what I was making in 1983 but I saw it a a great chance to get involved.

The phone rings....
LMDC: Courtney please.
Courtney: Yes?
LMDC: I'm calling for Courtney.
Courtney: This is Courtney
LMDC: No, I am calling for the Courtney who sent the resume' to the LMDC.
Courtney: Yes, ma'am. . this is THAT Courtney.

DEAD SILENCE

LMDC: Well, okay, I guess. Can you come in for an interview on Monday.
Courtney: Yes, I'd be please to.

Arrive on Monday

I'm here for the interview.
LMDC gal: There must be a mistake, we've a Courtney scheduled for 10:00AM.
Courtney: Yes, I am Courtney.

3o minutes late I am escorted to an office.

LMDC Gal: Take a couple minutes an tel me about you.
Courtney: 3 minute sanned soliloquey
LMDC Gal: Any questions for me?
Courtney: stutter a few, trying to find a "topic".
LMDC Gal: Thanks

It was funny and the perfect compliment to the 3 offers I've had from male recruiters for dates. They could NOT get me in and out of the place fast enough.

Never the courtesy of a reply, a get lost, or an acknowledgement.

The following day ,I read that their President quit in disgust. $20B of OPM (other people's money) creates interesting situations.

I've decided to seek "peaceful fulfillmet" in other ways and to whore myself out at what I do best.......whatever that is.

I am imbued with a much elevated appreciation for the futility that women and minorites feel. Having lost my last job the day I refused to falsify a minority usage report (anybody here remember Ray Donovan and what happened to his cabinet appointment) it amazes me.

Didn't Johnny Cash sing about "boy named Sue"?. . there may be a tune in this deal.

I am writing the tale of my months of unemployment, it has, to say the least, been interesting.

Let's see, today's forecast hi for Chicago is around 32 and partly cloudy. Brooklyn is snowed in with hi forecast to be 23. Houston is sunny and headed for 58.

Bomber and Court, I think you BOTH need to bring yourselves (and that jug of Oban) down here and we'll all go for a nice ride...

Shoot, it's supposed to be 55 and sunny in Tyler--maybe we can Blake to ride down, too!

Bomber, yeah, but I was thinking of a longer ride. You know the rule on old Brit bikes: "Don't ride 'em further than you're willing to walk back from!" On the other hand, a coupla snorts of Oban would be nice while relaxing in the hot tub after a little "motor-hiking!"

They just had their stories confused is all. They knew there was something to do with plastic sheeting, but had forgotten about storm windows.

ps, did you know a sheet of plastic can be used as a dandy cheap sled. Well, cheap at non-NY prices that is.

San Joaquin Inn?? Wrong coast, dude, you're no doubt thinking of the San Jacinto Inn over on the east side, and no, unfortunately, it's not. They had some ongoing difficulties with the Health Dept and shut down years ago. However we do have the Ragin Cajun about 2 miles from my spare bedroom, and there's always Roadrunr's backyard for Chicago-style boiled crawfish.

The good news is, food is not a problem in this town! Everything from Continental shi-shi to Tex-Mex dives and BBQ joints where they serve your brisket on butcher paper. We even have the occasional dumpster! If you make it down here, I can pretty much ga-ron-tee you won't go hungry. In fact, I'll make it my personal mission to send you back to NYC with a reason to keep jogging around Central Park!

>>>San Jacinto Inn

That's it!

In the Redstone Rocket and Freindship 7 days, it was a favorite shrimp gobbliing and watering hole of the Astronauts and my Uncle took me there once.

If I were to do an extrapolative surmisement of Houston, I'd say it's Steak to the North (Salt Grass) and Seafood to the South. Both viable alternatives.
Tentative biggie, biggie meeting scheduled for today. 26.4" of snow between the car and the street and I am in the "wait to hear if we're on" mode. I am going to, instead of exercising today, go perform a pre-emptive shoveling in the event the "yeah, we're on" call comes.

I keep reflecting on your words and thinking how much work would screw my schedule up.

By the way, could you skip a day of work and photograph that Norton for us? You've aroused my interest in project bikes. Current candidates are the CL77 Honda 305 Scrambler, CB1 and I think in this lifetime I am going to have to own a Triumph Bonneville. Have any suggestions as to year?

All the best...send warm weather!

Court: Photos will be forthcoming, count on it!

Thought about you this morning while listening to the TV news announcer saying that in NYC "non-essential workers are encouraged to stay at home today." I thought, "well, Court can stay in his basement with a clear conscience today!"

I can't advise you on Honda restorations, I don't really have any expertise in that direction.

Triumphs are a different story. Any of the 650's from 1963 to 1970 (the unit construction, dry frame years) are pretty good. The '69 and '70 model 650's are generally considered to be the best years, they have the good TLS front brake and the classic curvy oil tank and matching left-side cover. '71 and later models, with oil-in-frame, are probably "better" motorcycles than the early ones, but they just don't have the classic Triumph look, to my eyes at least.

The single carb models (TR6) are easier to maintain--synch-ing twin Amal leakerators can be a frustrating experience. The Bonnies aren't noticeably faster except at the top end, and who really cares how fast an antique 650 goes, anyway? Mikuni carb conversions and Boyer electronic ignitions are worthwhile mods. The Amals will wear out their slides from vibration, and while the Lucas points actually work OK, once the mechanical advance gets old & cranky, you're better off without them.

My "perfect" Triumph would be a '70 TR6 with a 2.5 gallon gas tank off a Bonneville and a disc brake front end off a late-model OIF bike. Pretty candy blue over white, man I'd be stylin'...

I actually rode my '70 TR6 from Baton Rouge to Wyoming, twice, during the summers of '71 and '72. Now, when I get off the Road Pig and sit on the Bonneville, I feel like I'm on a 10-speed bicycle and I can't believe I made those trips!

Stay warm, pal...

I love it!

I woke up this morning, looked out the window and declared "I don't think I'm gonna go to the office today". I've become a worthless parasite upon the system AND maintained my witty sense of humorous!

Downside is, there are dark clouds on the horizon and it looks like my 6 months of being a kept man is about to end like an arrested landing on a carrier deck.

Thanks for the TR6 tip. Did I hear you say "while the Lucas points actually work OK"? I think you have Texheimers.
