Dan: I believe there are 3 distinct models as far as S2 VIN's go: '95 S2's, '96 S2's, and '96 S2T's. These should all be serialized separately. So Jim's bike, being a '95 S2, should be a separate sequence of serial numbers than our '96 S2T's, as well as having other differences in the VIN's for year and model.

I'm amazed Jim's could have that low of a serial number and yet be made in March of '95, that's getting fairly late in the '95 model year. Were they that late in getting the bike out?

Jim: the S2 is a plain vanilla 9:1 Sportster motor with a different air cleaner and exhaust. The M2 has always had a Buell motor, i.e. 10:1 compression, light flywheels, higher rev limit, etc. They do both use the same cams, though.

Oops,
I didn't catch that his was a 95!! My mistake.

Aaron,
You will be doing the Colorado fest in June won't you? I am planning on taking 2 weeks vacation during that time and was wondering if I might be able to follow you home afterwards and do some dyno runs/tuning at your place?

Dan: hell yes!

If Kim had a place where I could set it up and make a racket, I might even be inclined to drag it up there and we could have a dyno shootout.

I gotta tell you...I LOVE talking and hearing about S-2s. This is the bike that happened due to a host of intentional and unintentional events.

Fact of the matter is. . . it's a bike that could never be planned, budgeted and pass corporate muster. It's existence, from simply a business case perspective, is amazing.

Once you have ridden one, you'll be unable to explain precisely why, but you'll know it's a very special motorcycle.

I've ridden all the Buells (except the XB) for many miles and the S2 still gives me goose bumps.

Court,
More S2 questions for you. You already established that the 96 S2 has a carbon fiber rear fender thst is painted. My question is if I strip off the paint what will I find? Is the CF in good enough shape that I could clear coat it and make it look pretty? Is it still the green CF? Can I have your S2 CF bodywork? :) hehe

Back in town and sort-of on-line after an office move. Following up on the mid-seat bracket.

P/N 52044-96Y superceded to M0098.8A, "Bracket Center Seat Mounting". Also references two screws, p/n 2510Y.

gotta run, mis/it here to unplug me again.

Jes fer fun, anyone thinkin' 'bout an S2 registry...kinda like track all of 'em down and see what's cookin' where and with whom?...

I wrangled #321 in Parkway Blue outta Union Grove, WI. Sweet. Thanks Joe, it has a great home next to the 98S1W. Maybe someday we can track down the motor internals and figure out who did what with what. Sure runs fine! Something tells me those Ulicki fellas had a hand in something here.

Kevyn:

If you see Keith or Harry Wirth, please convery my best wishes.

Don't try taking the paint off the CF fender. It was intended (ala EFB) to be functional, not cosmetic.

Hi Court,

I am working on an article about the Schwinn Paramount bicycle that Erik Buell designed in the mid 80's. I'm asking for ANY info you may want to share. (Direct email to me would be best, but a post here would be fine.) Production numbers, color options, team usage, patents earned, design changes, theories proven, etc. Also, if you own one and would like to submit a digital photo, I may want to use it. This is for a local BRAG newsletter. I'm just hoping to tap your well of knowledge.

Big thanks,
Don Sieg

Don,
If possible it would be great if you could either post or provide a link to the article when it's completed/published.
Rumor has it that there are still several of the bicycles in their original crates just waiting for the right buyer to come along.

Urgan legend, I suspect. But....I shall find out.

Buell Bicycle

I have the FIRST one hanging from the ceiling of my office. To this date it amazes me. At one time, it amazed the world when Glen Adams used it to snag a Bronze Medal in Europe after being seeded 50th of 50. He missed a Silver by 0.002 seconds. I have the old Buell newsletter (then called the "Tailpipe", that had the photos and the story. It also appeared in two bicycle magazines.

I bought mine though a wierd sort of circumstnaces and, I assume as a result of a house cleaning on Jefferson Street, one day I opened to the mail to find a brown envelope stuffed with leftover correspondence, drawings and component information.

By today's rapidly advancing standards it likely pales. But the Buell bicycle, not unlike the motorcycle, broke new ground in terms of actually APPLYING technology and putting it to practical use. Lots of folks had talked, Paramount paid and Erik did.

By the way...I rode the thing once...honest I didn't mean to, but I HAD to...and it is a BLAST!

Court,
I sent you an email about the VIN on my S2. Just a heads up since I'm certain you get many emails a day.

Getting Court to take your money is harder than taking a bone from a junkyard dog!! The world would be a better place if we had many more folks like him. :)

Yeah right Dan....now put down the glue and back away from the bottle :)

Don: Let me see what I can find. If you need photos of THE bike you are welcome to mine. Frankly, I know of a handful of "careful recreated" (like the ones Scott Miller bought for the Harley museum) bikes but darn few "not one piece has been added or taken off" units. Mine is avaialable to any "Elf" for any prupose that advances the Buell cause.

The old Tailpipe is buried, but I think I know where. If you want to mail me an address, I'll get you a copy. Be sure to let me know what time constraints you are under. In addition, I'll try to arrange a phone-erview with Chris Fiorini who can tell you more about "The Buell Bike" than anybody.

Drop me a note.....This is REAL ELF stuff.
