Hmmmm... seems to be a bug in that utility. I was unable to delete the message, but I tried to edit it leaving only a single "." period as teh message. It uploaded, or seemed to, but did not change on this page. Bummer. I'll try editing again, since maybe my failed deletion attempt and subsequent striking of the "Back" button caused once again edited post not to be recognized. Post edit try #4. If this works then apparently trying to post a blank message caused the problem. Posting with just a "." should work okay. |

Sheesh, now it works. I guess the answer is that we cannot delete a post, but we can edit it within 30 minutes. |

Blake: Howsabout a Buell Motor Company (not Motorcycle Company) History page? I'd like to post some of the neat old material I have, press releases, documentation, advertisements, stuff like that, that gives insight into the Buell Motor Company of yesteryear. I'd need a little bigger picture size limit than the 30K I get on the GDB. Dave says I can do it so long as I put a copyright notice in. I doubt HD would bitch, hell, it promotes interest in their products, but if they did, we could just remove the offending material. Also, we could put some of Dave and Court's old stories on the page. Oh, by the way, the link from the GDB to here is broke. Thanks, AW |

Blake: How about a "Skip Preview" option for posting messages? Like the "Post as Anonymous" one. Even though you can set it to do that by default in your profile. Once in a while i post up a few lines that i really dont need to preview. Maybe others too. Tha's that. Thanks for everything Blake Travis |

Blake, What version of Discuss are you using at the present time for the Bad Weather Bikers' BBS? The reason I'm asking is I've frequented another private Discuss Board since the day the Discuss BBS software was released. Their site is using a different version than the Bad Weather Bikers' BBS and their messagebase search engine works fine. I "realize" he is using a beta version, but they are up to beta 19 so far with no noticable problems. Here's a posting that the SysOp sent to me when I asked the question. ----- Then the best bet is to suggest an upgrade to the current 3.10 Beta. From Beta 16 or later, Discus seems pretty stable in my opinion. Those last three words are significant, because DiscusWare specifically recommends against using Beta versions for production boards. We are running B18 and will soon go to B19. If his board is running an earlier beta of 3.10, then it is somewhat urgent that he upgrade to at least 16 or 17. ----- When I ran my BBS, I always updated to the latest and greatest beta(s). I "completely understand" that problems could arise, but I never ran into any problems in 10+ years of being a SysOp (perhaps I was just lucky too). Of course, I wasn't running Discuss either, so I'm not aware of how well they test their beta(s). The reason I'm bringing this all up is simply because of the non-functional search feature on the BBS. This is a key feature of the BBS and a lot of important information is difficult (if not totally time consuming) to access. BTW, on another note, do the moderators have access to create a new message conference area (if you're not available)? It sure would be nice to have a couple of more areas for postings (like the Blast for one). Thanks for offering us this great forum, -JW:>) |

Jim & Blake, I agree, using a version of Discuss with a working search would really improve this board. I use Discuss for the systems support that I do for imaging products, and it works just fine. Take a look at http://developer.livepicture.com I did notice that this site is running on a Cobalt linux server. I have a friend that works at Cobalt, and I'm trying to get him to see the value of bundling Discuss with their servers. I like this product. I used to do big support sites in Lotus Notes, but this scales pretty well, in the under 1,000 users category. And it is free! It is much better than the WWWBoard cgi that ATC uses. Another piece of software that I like is Manilla from Userland software. http://www.userland.com Dave Winer is an old friend of mine that went to school at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. We go way back to the Apple II days in the late 70's. Jim |
