http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/video-victory- motorcycles-presents-project-156-part-one/ They should have just bought a 1190SX. But then the media buzz would have been different. |

"Roland Sands" creating roadracer to climb Pikes Peak. I like it. I'm sure he is getting support from the factory though. (Message edited by finedaddy1 on May 09, 2015) |

There's a thread at ADVrider about it and Cycle World has run a couple of articles. http://www.cycleworld.com/2015/05/07/team-cycle-wo rld-returns-to-pike-peaks-hill-climb-project-156/ They go to a lot of trouble in the article above to not clearly show the engine; some of the photos are even deliberately blurred. After comparing it to photos of the Indian Scout engine, I think it's the same engine with different cosmetics- smaller cam covers, different accessory covers, fins on the heads (which appear to be part of the cylinders), etc. Perhaps a new Victory model using this engine is in the works? |

They went through great lengths to sensor the Motor, but they missed a few angles. I was watching the short teaser they have out and spotted this so I snapped some pics.

Borrowed from the thread at ADVrider: screen cap from video on the left, showing someone working on the engine design on CAD; Indian Scout engine on the right. Looks like the bolt pattern/arrangement for the clutch cover, water pump and starter (?) match between the two engines, while the head castings are clearly different: Comparing the top end of the engines- Mockup engine in Sand's bike: Scout engine: The cam covers are clearly different, but the cams are in the same place and the mating surfaces seem to match between the two engines. I'm thinking this is a new Victory engine based on a re-styled Scout engine, which could result in some cool new models from Victory. |

Ok, I know Roland Sands has put out a lot of really cool looking bikes. Some of them I really love, but has he done roadracing? Seems like the ideal place for the ZTL braking system. |

Yes, he was a AMA roadracer at one point |

Not only did Roland Sands race professionally in the AMA, he was a 250 cc champion. |

(Cross-posting most of this from a thread on the Quickboard.) Canet crashed the Victory bike a couple of weeks ago during practice on the mountain, damaging it pretty badly. They took it back to Sands' shop and rebuilt it. He had a good run in qualifying yesterday, coming in first in class and forth overall among motorcycles: http://www.cycleworld.com/2015/06/26/2015-pikes-pe ak-hill-climb-race-qualifying-victory-motorcycles- project-156-update-video-photos/?src=SOC&dom=fb I read a little further:
quote:Honda’s Jeff Tigert topped timesheets with a 4:17.259 despite a crash in his second run today. He was bruised and battered, but not seriously injured. “Normally, you take it pretty easy your first run, but I noticed that the clouds were starting to get pretty thick,” Tigert said. “I decided to put in a hard one so I’d have a decent time just in case the weather got bad.” He had done a 4:15 in the same section earlier this week. The team intends to repair the bike in time for race day. Travis Newbold, at 4:19.954, was second following a strong showing on the Buell-1125R-based Ronin, which was running an EBR 1190RX engine. Bruno Langlois was third with a 4:22.997 on a Kawasaki ZX-10R, followed by Canet with a 4:23.859 and Ducati Multistrada 1200-mounted Jamie Robinson with a 4:25.463. Canet is competing in the exhibition class because Project 156 is using a prototype V-twin engine; he is about 20 seconds ahead of the second-fastest qualifier in his class. The other four top qualifiers riding production-based motorcycles are in the Heavyweight class.
So the EBR-powered Ronin was almost 4 seconds quicker than the Victory. |

Well Done Travis!! I saw a Roland Sands "chest pounding event" (not a fan at all) and he said he built a bike for a race and made it to the podium all the while everyone was congratulating him on the bike he built and failed to acknowledge his podium feat. I've never been impressed with anything he has built. He obviously has skill and talent I just don't care for his application of it. Victory could have gone a much better route. I do wish them luck as we need more American success in the motorcycle industry. (Message edited by figorvonbuellingham on June 29, 2015) |

Dave, That is neat that an electric vehicle won overall, but please note that electric motors don't lose power due to thinner air at altitude, so on a "one lap" time trial at such high elevation, they actually have a pretty good advantage, at least over normally aspirated internal combustion powered vehicles. A well-tuned turbocharger or blower could probably wipe out much of that advantage though. I wonder if electric vehicles will be come relatively more popular in the mountainous regions. Burn power going up, generate it coming down. |

Agreed Blake. Also because of the very short time of the race the electrics don't have capacity issues but it still a significant milestone. |

A well-tuned turbocharger or blower could probably wipe out much of that advantage though Very true. Sebastien Loeb's time in the Peugeot 208 was about 55 seconds faster 2 years ago than the fastest time this year. I can't remember the exact details about it, but I think it was a twin turbo V6 making around 900hp.} |
