Long straights exaggerate the difference in horsepower between machines, hence the bikes tend to get spread out--which is boring (at least in my book.) It sure would be interesting to do an analysis on the MotoGP results and take say the average gap between the top 10 finishers. The look at the tracks with the longest straights and see if there is a correlation. I bet there is. (Message edited by fresnobuell on April 16, 2015) | ||

The year that Rossi switched to Yamaha from Honda there was an interview with him in Cycle World. He pointed out that there is only ONE straight, but LOTS of turns. He and Jeremy tuned the bike for the turns, figuring they could make up the one straight there. For the most part, it works. Look at the success he and Lorenzo have had over the years on the M1. | ||

I never disputed that fact. My point is certain tracks have tendencies for better/worse racing and the length of the straights have a large impact of the quality of said racing. You have tracks like Assen (the WSBK boys are at Assen this weekend) and this track has a reputation for producing close, exciting racing. It's longest straight is 560 meters. I'd lump Laguna in with the tracks that produce great racing time and time again. It has no true straight. | ||

That was classic Rossi, push the guy in front so hard he makes a mistake. Marc could have run a little wider and attacked again but toss it away. Great race. | ||

A really fantastic race for Rossi! It was amazing to see him come up from 8th place and then close the 4 second gap to pass Marquez. I almost felt as if Marquez backed off his pace just to allow some competition, but in retrospect I think it was a poor tire choice that closed the gap. Unfortunate incident there at the end, I'd have rather watched it with the two of them trading places back and forth. My wife and I were watching it live on my tablet at Road Atlanta, waiting for the second Superstock race to get underway between rain squalls... I nearly put a hole in the steering wheel airbag of my van when Marquez crashed. | ||

I don't think there was going to be any swapping of positions. The Doctor systematically reeled him in, passed him and was going to pull away quickly. There was no evidence Marquez had any answer for the GOAT today. Marquez made a huge mistake in not just settling for 2nd place. | ||

Champions don't settle. Rossi doesn't, didn't, and won't. Neither did Marquez. You have your opinion about how the race would have ended, and I have mine. That's fine. There was no evidence Marquez had any answer for the GOAT today. There's no evidence he didn't. Since he didn't finish the race, we'll never know about today's other possible outcomes. I've said before and I'll say again that I'd love to see Rossi secure a 10th world title. Nobody feels good about a rider crashing. | ||

There was plenty of evidence. If Marquez had any kind of answer he would not have let Rossi get close enough to pass him. His pit board was showing that gap close lap after lap. The ONLY answer Marquez had was contact and he ended up body slammed because of it.
Sure they do. Some days you are not the fastest and you collect whatever point you can on that day. I have seen Rossi do it plenty of times. Marquez no doubt learned a big lesson today--not only about championship management but that the paddock is ready to bite back. | ||

It was interesting, because our tyre choice was different from Valentino’s as I felt we were not as competitive the harder compound. Rossi was the only one consistently riding in the low 1:39s at the end of that race. MM was in the high 1:39s, except for Lap 21 (1:39.370.) UNfortunately for him, the GOAT went 1:39.302 on that lap.  Here are the gap changes by lap between MM (leader) and VR (running in second place.) To me this is the story no matter what MM says after the fact. Awful lots of minuses... Lorenzo's back on top in Jerez. Marquez, with a broken left pinky is third, with Aleix Espargaro separating the two. The Doctor is concentrating on race setup (not speed) and is farther down the standings. Pedrosa will not be racing this round. | ||
