AMA Pro Road Racing Round 2 The Triumph Big Kahuna Atlanta Road Atlanta Braselton, Georgia April 20-22, 2012 By Eric Barrows Topping a Sixth place from Daytona should be tough.OK, maybe not tough, maybe pretty near impossible considering the level of competition in the AMA SuperBike class. But that’s exactly what the EBR team accomplished at this “Proper race track”.That’s what one of the riders said. This is a “right proper” race track he told me.This is a “Man’s” track.And so it was and Geoff May was the Man that day!He showed what an EBR can do at a right proper race track.And that would be a Fifth Place on Saturday. Following that display of speed, Sunday was looking even better.  Geoff got off a pretty good start and it was looking like a fourth was possible if not likely, when his shifter came loose in the first few corners of an early lap.He told me that he had to ride it all the way back in third gear! I’m certain the anguish he was feeling at the time was fully deserved but not easily forgotten. Nonetheless he got a quick fix in the pit and proceeded to charge around that track like a steaming Bull, Er...Buell, I mean an EBR. Infineon to be exact, but as a track dear to my heart I refuse to call it that. I spent many a weekend in the midst of my youth roaming these hills and awaiting my Dads turn to race his Alfa Spyder. Many good memories survived the death of brain cells brought on by the semi-reckless toilings of this body.A good number of cool, wet mornings followed by salty aired afternoons passed before the eyes of that young kid, happily studying the ways of a gearhead/race mechanic. And now, as in many years since, I return to Sonoma, the scene of those all too distant memories. But rather than wrenching I return to chronicle the advances of our Two-wheeled race teams.Who would of thought? Well, I should have seen it coming! It was at this very track that in the early days of my youth my Dad handed me an old Bronica and said try to get as close as you can.And don’t waste film.Remember film?For you youngsters it was the only way to capture those memories. I exposed many a roll of Tri-X at this rolling hills of a race course. Laguna too. But thats a story for another day! So I’ll stall my reminiscing at this juncture and get on with the Photo show.
