As I'm looking toward the 2011 race season I may have lost an inexpensive dealership connection who mounted and balanced race rubber for me.

I'm considering purchasing the equipment to mount and balance at home, now. Does anyone have any suggestions, thoughts, warnings, etc? Should I just buck up and pay the price to have a shop mount and spin balance, instead?

Thanks in advance!

Cycle Hill Tire Changer and balancer is the way to go, they even have an accessory to mount it to a trailer hitch so you can bring it to the track.

Oh just an FYI, the Cycle Hill is made by Nomar. It is their consumer version thats a bit cheaper than the professional grade Nomar. : )

This is a slight step up from what I bought as a package two years ago. I get a LOT of use from mine, and for the Buell wheels they work great.

Thanks guys!
This is exactly the information I needed!

Nice videos on the No-Mar product line site, too. I'm really surprised that more companies don't do that as it answers a lot of questions.

The Cycle Hill stuff is about $200 cheaper for a similar package. Still, it pays for itself after a few uses, and you could make a few dollars off your buddies by changing their tires. It will also do car tires too.

It's less than the cost of two sets of race slicks!

I welded up a mount for my neighbors Harbor Freight mounter so we can put it in the trailer hitch of his F150... much easier than mounting it to the floor (which I also did), and it would work at the track as well.

Use lots of lube and lots of heat. A hot tire mounts SO much easier than a cold one...

Reep,
You don't like my bench vice bead breaker? I'd love to get a NoMar, but need to get a proper shop first. Don't think Heather would like her car getting booted outside in the cold so I could bolt a tire changer in it's place.

Jeez; why didn't I think of that? I've been doing tire changes for free and kicking in a free meal to boot!
It doesn't matter, my NoMar has paid for itself already; from here on, it's saving me money.

Hey I been researching on racing, not so much for this year but for next year with out a doubt. I've been looking at the cost of everything from fold up trailers, to generators, vehicles to tow with, and yes...the cost of tire changes. Even with $20 dollar tire changes + a recycling fee per wheel I figure doing it yourself over time will pay off. How good are these things and how fast does it take to change/balance a tire?

Erik

Diesel, I did a set of tires on my 1125R at Crusty's place using his Nomar machine, it is very easy, the harest part was getting the wheels off and on the bike. There are videos on the Nomar website that show you what to do, it is pretty straight forward.

Deflate tire, break bead, pull old tire off, push the fresh rubber on, re-inflate, then balance. I want to say it took a little over an hour from start to finish for both wheels on my 1125R, including having to remove the wheels from the bike. I'm sure with some practice it will be easier next time, I think we spent more time fighting the brake calipers than mounting the rubber.

Tommy at Blackhawk Raceway use to charge me $10 per tire to mount AND balance AND take the old tire.
Lot's of races this season at BH. Seems cheaper that way Ralph. I assume he's still there.

Rocco!! Long time no see!!
Yep, you're right and if you buy the tires at the track it's free to mount and balance as always.
The I.F.M. Racing team might switch to Continentals this year and right now I don't think there will be anyone supporting them at Blackhawk or Road America. I thought since there are four of us we might be ahead to purchase our own equipment and not have to scramble so much at the track.
Continental has a good contingency this year with no minimum number of riders plus one of their vendors is offering screaming deals to get folks to use them.
It's all about the dollars or lack thereof!

you could do what i did.... talk five riding buddies into going in on the nomar and ballancer : ) keep it at your place and when anyone needs tires its time for a hang out at your place. bonus, you get to use it any time! and the cost is a little over $100

I'm a 1/2 owner of a No-Mar that doesn't have the pedestal. It was like $600 and we just drilled three holes in the top of the bench and pop it up there with some wingnuts and it's on & off in a minute or two.
