The XB sounds like a Jackhammer in the mist of a swarm of bee's, when a pack of bikes pass the camera. Awesome. I think the big four has paid speed not to mention the name Buell, if they mentioned them yet, I missed it. |

listen to the sound of the bike pack when they fly by, and to all the bikes in the background, when they are just focused on certain bikes. You can hear the buell Thundering around the track. The V-Twin sound is so, so different and Powerful, compared to the other machines ...I love It! |

WOW! That was awesome! Gonen, how right you are. You could hear the Thunder. I'm proud of the race teams. Not a bad showing at all. Look forward to future races. THEY DEFINITELY HEARD US! |

Daa-umn...! I set my VCR for 2am to record the race, but something got mucked up (probably operator error) and it didn't work. Sucks to be me I guess. Anyone know if they are going to show it again? Did they show any Buell's going down the track? Jody S. |

I was there, and you wouldn't have believed how loud the Buells were ((117dB rumored). You couldn't hear the swarm of bees whenever one of the jackhammers went by. In fact, the main grandstand just about lines up with the section of the track that is the dragstrip runoff, but it's a ways away. Once the Buells dropped down off the carousel and onto that straight, they were heading directly away from you a quarter mile away, and they were STILL thunderous. Henry Duga said at .B.N that the AMA officials hid the noise meters for that race, but that they won't for Barber and Laguna Seca. So they've got some work to do to get the noise down without losing any power in the process. At the end of the front straight, there was a chicane-like turn 1. The Buells just LAUNCHED off the alligators teeth on that chicane to go up the hill to turn 2. Was good seeing them out there. I have some pics of the race bikes up close, I'll post them when I get some time. Al |

It pissed me off. They announced they were showing FX, the first 3 mins of the airing talked about FX, then when it came down to the startline interview it gremlined and when it came back they were showing the 600 superstock race... |

The FX race was just after that. Yeah... The Buell's were LOUD! They would be showing footage of first and second (something like ten seconds ahead of third) and you could hear the Buell's in the background. At the start you could distinctly hear them going by while drowning out the IL4's . As far as footage... There was a good deal of it with the top Buell just coming into frame before they switched and they did a run-through of the field to tenth place once (JUST as Ciccotto dropped to eleventh) and showed footage of Barnes blasting around the carousel. I think Barnes made three passes total and I wish they would have showed that footage. All in all, glad I stayed up until 1AM last nigh t . |

Glad I stayed up too but was excited and disappointed a the same time. If any other manufacturer had run a race for the first time like that, I think they would've gotten a little more mention. They only mentioned the Buells once during the race, oh, there goes an XB9R. Poopey! |

Here's some, didn't have my camera with me when the fairings were off. The oil cooler duct was kinda cool. The airbox feeds are a bit industrial/mutant, but it was pretty amazing how much they had in common with the stock bikes. The grid, Buells circled Some shots of the Kosco bike just after the race Some shots of the Hals bike, fresh off the track after the race Ciccotta and Barnes, talking right after the race \image(racers} edited by al_lighton on May 13, 2004 |

That is one well-ventilated rear brake rotor! I wonder if that pipe makes more power than a drummer?

you are kidding about the air intake hoses, they look like the ones on the back of my Dryer, in my laundry room. or the arms off of Robot from "lost in space" "danger will robinson danger" |

The air intake hoses are pure function. Form follows function. You should see some of the stuff you never get to see, just makes one scratch their head and roll their eyes and say "whatever works I guess". |

It's also influenced by lack of money! It would be nice to have more exotic pieces on these bikes, but they are being run on minimal budgets, with the goal of finishing and finishing well. So some of the parts aren't as pretty as they could be.

Forgive me if this is a totally ignorant question, but do the race Buells use chains instead of belts? Also, how many races are the Buells running in? Is it just Formula Xtreme? And what does the schedule look like? Any races in the south or southeast around August/September timeframe? That's when I should be home and it would be great to see. Thanks in advance. Sean |

Sshbsn, Haha! That's right, one chain for two bikes...only the fast one gets a chain! Sean, They do run chains because of the gearing changes necessary between different tracks. |

Does anyone besides me see an opportunity here? Design a nice vent hose intake setup with a fairing mod. Should be some way to reduce the overall height. I just need an XB and a shop and some money and ....

Oh, ok. Thanks Anonymous. That makes sense. I've never watched a motorcycle race. But I think I'm going to start. It's pretty impressive how they can get such power and performance out of an engine so small. I see that on the AMA schedule there's a Formula Xtreme race in Atlanta on 14SEP. I think I will be on leave around that time, (As long as the anti-coalition forces don't decide to have another uprising) and I'm sure I can arrange a trip to Atlanta. My wife's best friend lives there, so she can go hang out and shop or whatever, while I go to the race to take pictures and drool... Al - do they just let you into the pit area, or did you have a connection to get in there? |
