My brother was standing at the corner where Steve Plater crashed and reckons he must be th eluckiest man alive and certaily had the luck of the Irish with him that day! He went through a hole in the catch fancing and missed a lamp post and TV gantry by around 6 feet at 120mph+ and only suffered a broken arm! Even though there were over 100,000 spectators there it wasn't crowded because they were spread so far around the circuit  | ||

I stumbled on the live BBC feed of the Northwest on Saturday and watch the last superbike race. Brilliant stuff! BBCNI streamed all the races live on their web site along with pretty good commentary. The helicopter stuff is a neat way to see all the drafting that takes place. Kind of a low turnout with really bad weather in the morning before the roads closed so only 100,000 so fans  I understand they have had crowds of 150,000 on occasion. Kind of a bummer that I can watch a race live from Ireland but can't even get a delayed broadcast of an AMA race short of setting the DVR to record stuff from late at night. HEck I have to do that to watch some of the Moto GP stuff! Does give you some idea of how popular MC racing is here in the states. The Irishman Alastair Seeley won two races including one superbike; first time in over a decade that an Irishman has won a SB race tehre so the locals were excited. I met Seeley at Daytona a few years ago and he really was working hard to get a decent BSB ride and he seems to have done it. He didn't like most of the real road racing because of the danger but he needed to race them to get some attention. Nice fellow and a pretty good racer. Looks like a good ride on the TAS Suzuki, I hope he does well. He seems right on the cusp. | ||

I met Seeley at Daytona a few years ago and he really was working hard to get a decent BSB ride and he seems to have done it. Didn't Alistair Seeley ride for Celtic Racing at Daytona and a few other AMA races? I think it was the same season that Chaz davies won(?) at Daytona? He has had to work harder tham most to get this BSB ride, having come up from winning the Superstock title last year. He is a great rider and I hope he continues to do well | ||

Yes, he was on the Celtic Racing team and was replaced by Davies. He has had to work hard, I think there is some prejudice against guys who run too many of the real road races. Perhaps justified as I think the stone walls and trees tend you keep one from taking as many chances as the circuit guys do. I could could be way off base on this of course, just my opinion from very far away. |
