my friend is having an issue with tire spin if launching above 3500. then bogging if below 3000. (xb9)

he tried the 630 cams (ran worse) went to stock cams, has 575 in hand to install.

He cant find the sweet spot.

He has wheelie bars.

I dont have track time to answer 100%.

He is on a built xb9 which xb9's are know to come alive just around 3500 rpm.

His fuel is correct around 13.1 front and 13.4 rear varying some depending on day and weather.

I asked him to join here and ask for help on the drag because there is not any other buell drag guys at his local track to help.

I know you guys will steer him in the correct direction.

what you post I'll forward. I can get you his email address if needed to help directly.

Check the wheelie bar height and make sure it is not set too low and unloading the tire causing spin.

If he is comfortable on the bike you should really encourage him to join the AHDRA and come to the Georgia race this coming up week. Would be an excellent time to speak with others who run a similar bike with similar setup etc etc

Rule of thumb was adjust with bars with rider on bike with wheels on 2x4. Make runs with an observer watching lower bars until wheel spin is observed then raise 1/2 turn at a time till spin just goes away. If your using a street tire you may never get rid of the spin then you get to buy a better tire.

Here are a couple of generic pieces of advice...first 46champ has some good advice on bar adjustment...I will add to that...the bars need to be as long as possible...equal to wheelbase or even longer if the rules allow...too short on the bars, and the bike will "hop" as it loads and unloads...second...properly adjusted bars will have the front tire no more than an inch or so off the ground when launching with the front suspension at full droop...bar design and geometry also affect how they work...(pics of the setup would be nice)....

Tires: a quick peek at an ad seems to indicate that the tire you are using is treaded...if so...water will get in the treads during the burnout and affect traction on the start line...so if it is treaded do not back into or pull through the water...do the burn out on DAMP track area or just do a couple of dry hops.

If the rules allow, ditch the metzler and get a Mickey Thompson 7" slick, they are available in 17" rim size and will work fine on the 5.5" stock rear wheel...

Beyond that, you get into clutch managment where you run a lock up clutch with light springs...the light springs help you get off the line without spinning the tire too much and the centrifugal part clamps the clutch down track...

It would take a year to type a complete explanation of what to do...it would be like Opti explaining how the electronics work inside an ECM...; )

The bottom line is...traction managment and clutch managment...since you have a diaphragm clutch spring, you need aftermarket parts (like a lockup) to tune the clutch...you can slow down the clutch action to control the speed of the engagement....but at this point, you should focus on traction and chassis...If I was you...I would tune the bar setup and improve the tire traction...hint...a high speed video camera will reveal worlds of info that you can't see or feel about how the bike reacts off the line....

One step at a time...and post some pics of the bike...from the side, with you sitting on it....on FLAT LEVEL concrete or pavement....

Off subject but what you need.

I am seeing some really good post somewhere else on those cheapo key chain cameras. They use sd cards and can be as small as your plain key fob for a car. you could get two or there of these on the bike. Then record each run with three views, front wheel, rear wheel and bars.
They are expensive from china. lol about 9.99 each. So far a lot of you tube videos are showing up as good as you tube gets. I have two on the way to test on my bike. they also have sound.
guess I need to get my bike out to play with these setups. First off to the circle track to get fuel.

See Delbert told you you can get good race info here on the drag stuff. here and the Uk forum gets me what I need to know on different subjects.

did you get the widebands yet? did you plan the summer trip south?

I have to coordinate with you to help. Not sure what use I'll be at the strip besides a camera holder. its not a corner speed and bike angle. Unless someone know someone close to him in TN willing to help a few times. Lord knows I would need help in this dept.

Okay,
I have set the bar and reset air pressure and set gear ratio at 2.52 that should put me in the middle of 4th in the 1/8. Havn't had tim to change cams out, so I will run stock one more test.
The floods have me cutting drywall and carpet out of my Folks house. flood in the basement.

Looking for a 7:90 - 8:00 on Wednesday night. I have been launching at 4500, may turn it up 500 or more.

I will most likely be looking for a clutch soon.

Mike the bike looks good.
I will try to get a few shots of mine at the track.

Dcb, one of the guys who runs with us in top street shoot outs, stock wheel base 03 xb9s has 34300 on the stock clutches, and he run around 7.93's. With your set up I would think you should get 7.50's easy. If you are using the clutch lever for shifting, don't just blip the throttle after u load the shifter and it will go right into the next. My old 04 XB12r and the other 2 XB12's that run in top street stock wheel base no wheelie bars no air shifters would run 7.60's all night long. I still have time slips and photos from my old 04 XB12r and I'll get one of the time slips from Josh on his 03 xb9s on Thursday night. Now my 08 1125R 7.00's stock wheel base no air shifter and these are 1/8 mile times. All of our motors are stock just air filters exhaust and race ecm's.
If any of us from Wilkes NC can help you out let me know, Garrett2 who is on here has run test and tune with us as well he runs in AHDRA on an S3 with wheelie bars, he may have some good info as well.

If i figure anything on clutchs I will let ya know.
I ran a 7:64 at the end of last year but can't figure why I can get back there. The only thing I done different was the large cams that I have now removed back to stick for now, and The addition of the XB12 throttle Body. other wise the motor is same as before.

I don't use clutch lever, air shift set up I fabricated and use a CO2 paint ball bottle for air source. (350 plus shift per bottle) I have a MPS auto shift activated at 7000 for the shift point. at this time.

If any one want info on the air shift let me know, I can send pic's.
I build my own Chain guard and Sprocket Cover as well to remove the stock plastic.

I will get pic's tomorrow at the track to send out for any details' you may like to see.

Any body in Wilkes NC have a dyno that can help with Buells, I'm not having any luck with any shops In louisville/Ky area. The H-D SHOP NEARBY WILL NOT TOUCH THE BUELL TUNING ON DYNO. I do make NC, once in awhile more than any other place.

By the way I live only 45 minutes from Bowling green where AMRA runs 3 times a year. If ya get that way, in June. let me know.

Man I wish the shop didn't close where I had inside privileges. Plus they sold the dyno I used for 4 years on top of that it was also portable.. arghhhhh

DcB, when you get the new cams installed you have the good data for it but you will need to match the fuel better. It shouldn't take more than an hour on the dyno. sounds like the guy Endoman33 is talking about can match the fuel for you.

I was looking at an earlier post 2.52 ratio? I would add more teeth and be at the end of 4th gear IMO.(But, I could be in left field on this part.) when you shift what rpm does it drop too? you want the shift to not drop below the max tq rpm. But also not to high where your not getting the TQ burst of speed. I think a few good dyno Hours would do you wonders. Your going to match the fuel better for the Pipes and new cams. plus you can see where the max Tq is at, allowing good shift point judgment.

I need to move some VSS settings in the tables for fuel and end pulse points. From there its just matching fuel to the bike.

Ask Pete about the new settings at GSD. they ran them in two bikes over the weekend.

My first thought on the lockup clutch was MTC engineering since I have successfully used their lock ups and sliders on metric bikes for a LONG time....

No joy.....unless you are running an S&S ProStock motor....they can't help...
