Barber race report 5/1/2010
got a late start Friday afternoon for the trip to Barber due to work and van issues. the trip to CMP put a hurting on the van pulling the 16ft tandem trailer i got from a buddy. i ended up doing trans oil and filter and installing a cooler in front of the radiator. that helped but gas mileage is still dismal. i ended up sleeping in a rest area and rolling in to Barber at first light. got entry and found Pat Mooney had saved me a spot next to him on the 3rd level. things were in a rush with unloading, registration, tech, suiting up and making first practice! i ended up missing a few laps but did get on track. lap times were slower than expected (1:46's)but it was early and i was tired too. i kind of messed around with the bike on tire pressures and such and went back out for 2nd and last practice for the day. it felt like i was moving faster but i could also see where i was leaving time on the track. checked lap times and found that i was circulating in the 1:42's. did a tire change to slicks to get ready for the novice heavyweight solo 16 lap race which is the open class. we ended up gridding with the experts and were in the 2nd wave. i got a good start in 2nd through the first half lap and dropped to 3rd. Christian Pettit was in the lead when Robin Davis came by me and then Danny Freels got by me on lap 2. i passed Danny back on lap 3 and thought that i had 3rd sewn up until i made a mistake on lap 13 at the uphill left/right past the museum and Danny went by me. i attempted to answer back but was unable to get past Danny although i was right behind him much of the way. 4th paid $75 so my race entry was covered anyway and Danny gave the 1125r big props for not being able to pass me on the straight! the best part of the race was when Tim Hunt and Danny Eslick swooped by me on the inside out of turn 5(Charlottes web) and those 2 machines were on first one wheel and then the other through the next 6 turns that i was still able to see them. WOW! i looked at my lap times and i had run the majority of my laps in the 1:40.something. finally showing some consistency. went to bed early after grilling some chicken tenders on my little black iron skillet. no charcoal allowed at Barber Motorsports park!
sunday came early and i rolled out of the sack at the crack of dawn, had some oatmeal and coffee and worked bike prep. been fighting a front brake fade issue so i decided to flush the systems. that went well and i did 2 rounds of practice. nothing great in practice but the bike felt good. the weather seemed to be holding off after finding out that there was an 80% chance of rain and thundershowers. Nashville took a beating for sure with that storm system. gridded up for Novice Heavyweight superbike in race 2 and we were in the 1st wave with the experts. wheelied on the start for the first time in a long time and ended up 4th in turn 1 but motored on the throttle around the outside of turn 2 and took the lead at the top of turn 3. i got the experts in sight and just tried to not let them get out of sight. we caught up to the first group on the 2nd lap and i never saw the experts again. i concentrated on passing as many as possible to put a buffer between me and the 2nd place rider and the race was red flagged on the white flag lap. 1st Place! Woohoo!! Pat Mooney on his 1125R won the expert class in a walkaway as well!! double Buell winners in the same class, expert and novice. my lap times were good but i had still not broken into the 1:39's with a best of 1:40.340. went up to the pits and pulled the slicks to get ready for the superstock race. it was still looking like rain and Pat's girl Lori showed me a nasty wall headed our way on the I phone. Pat packed up to head back to Florida and i waited to see if it would be DOT's or rains. i was in race 9 so when they called for 3rd call on race 6 i put on the DOT's. race 7 & 8 were combined so i was ready for the 3rd call for race 9 that didn't seem to come as it got darker and darker. after some silence they announced that due to too many bikes down on the track we would be on a 2nd call and holding. the rain looked like it was just over the horizon and after what seemed to be an eternity 3rd call came. hit the track in the dry and gridded up in the 2nd wave just behind the experts again. the 600 experts were gridded in the 1st wave and they took off. at the 2nd wave i got a textbook start and was on the tail of the last Heavyweight expert for the first part of the race. i kept him in sight until we caught the slower 600 experts and was unable to pass as quickly as the experts did. i concentrated on passing the next rider in front of me as the race went on and noticed that i was approaching somebody with a white plate. i caught up to him with 1 lap to go and i noticed him look back at Charlotte's web and protect the inside. i concentrated on staying as close to him as possible(as comfortable for me) and knew from the last lap that i had him on the final 2 turns to the finish line. i came in quick around the decreasing radius right hander and motored past him on the inside as he cleared the final turn to finish ahead of him at the checkers!! the Buell 1125R finishes first again!! (ahead of the Ducs, Honda's and Triumphs) i checked my lap times and had busted through the 1:39's and into the 1:38's with a 1:38.765!! i guess i'll be looking for the 1:37's next time out. it did start raining during race 13 and i loaded in the drizzle and drove 100 miles south before i got to the end of the rain. next up-Blackhawk Farms with CCS/ASRA and the Team Challenge race.
