The XR1200 is a nice Sportster. HD should be ashamed that they even mention the XR750 bikes on the same page. They have had years, decades even, to try and market the racing heritage of the XR and they failed to do so. What they did was create a sort of XR using an overweight frame, bad styling and "oh look I have an aluminum swingarm" marketing gimmicks.

I have a room full of XR stuff (posters, autographs, parts, factory racing team banners....) and almost crapped myself when I heard they were finally doing an XR style bike. The letdown was only a little less than when I heard my XB9R was now an orphan. Way to go HD.

Ducati did the Sportclassic line right. Take a look at the Paul Smart 1000 for proof of that.

Every marketing attempt that Harley has made that even made the suggestion of a racing or performance heritage has been pitiful and failed miserably.

...But if they weren't about to ask him for help on the VR1000, why start now?

My wife has an '83 Sportster We were at the local Harley shop and while she was looking at a few things that she could buy with a gift card, I was looking at the XR. She came up and asked if I liked it. I said it would be the only Harley I'd consider buying, it's supposed to handle decent... for a Harley. Then I said that I'd have to look at some Ducatis if I was going to drop that kind of coin for a bike. So we went and looked at the Hypermotard. I would have bought one except that I thought the 1125R was such a good value that I couldn't pass it up in the name of the Ducati coolness factor. So now I have a $5500.00 1125R in my garage that is still pretty cool and it'll kick any Ducati's butt this side of a 1098.

Family, I have an '08 XL1200R. Haven't ridden it since I got my 1125R. Handles like crap cause of the rubber mount engine. Literally bounces in turns when you push it. The Sportster will get sold this spring. The Buell is a track bike. I have a Yamaha FJR which I use as my commuter and some local touring. I'll never buy another Harley.

BTW two weeks ago I almost traded my FJR in on a black 1198S Duc. They're supposed to be limited production in black. Wife didn't like the idea and you probably know how that goes.

My wife actually asked me if I wanted the Harley, and I thought I might be ok with for a street bike, but that thought didn't last long. She really encouraged me to get a streetbike since I only had my racebike. Who am I to say no to her?
