I'm trying to track down a set of the Buell Manufactured racing rear sets for tuber models, specifically those for the X1. I posted a a picture over in the tuber section, and identified these as Storz units  However, another poster recently picked up an ex S1 race bike that had these   Which are a little different than the storz style(the are actually rearsets as opposed to storz more "up" sets compared to the stock X1 mounting) Can anyone confirm if the Buell manufactured rearsets(for the X1) were the Storz Pieces, or if they are more like the earlier S1 pieces in the above pictures? Buell Manufactured? I'm not recalling any such thing. Do you mean Banke? Banke Rearsets on my '97 M2. Very nice quality except for a few of the fasteners which are not stainless steel and have gathered a dusting of good ole iron-oxide; also the rear brake pedal seems to have lost leverage compared to stock; I can still lock the rear wheel on dry pavement, but it takes excessive effort. I'm aware of the Banke sets, unfortunately that's not what I'm looking for as I'm nearly positive Banke never made anything that was offered through Buell. I know crossroads made the early S1 Pro series rearsets, but these were different from the race only pieces offered through Buell as well. The only solid piece of information I have about them is that they used a directly linked reverse pattern shifter. I had the shifter identified in the picture of the Pro Thunder X1 lightning as a Storz Unit, so I assumed this was the correct piece. However, this picture of the earlier S1 race sets as me wondering if the Storz units are different from the race pieces offered by Buell  | ||

Just take a good look at those and copy them. It is just a solid piece of 1/4" aluminum with a couple of holes drilled in them. That couldn't get any easier. I don't know why I didn't think of that. | ||

Buddy of mine bought Bilansky's Thunderbike from Hals. The rear sets were either Storz or the same exact type. You might shoot Hals an email and see if they have any stuff left on a back shelf somewhere... otherwise like Eboos said, those plates in your pics would be simple to make by hand. | ||

I agree, in fact, I actually have the template for the Storz style brackets saved somewhere, I'll post them up when I find them. My biggest concern was which is the correct piece. I've got some plans for a project bike I'm working on, but as many of these old Buell race pieces are no longer available, I have a lot of fabrication ahead(I'm also working on dimensions for the aluminum tank that was available for a short time through Motorcycle research), but before I do that, I have to make sure I'm working on the right piece | ||

Those plate-style brackets are sure to be more rugged than the Storz-type. The thing I didn't like about the Storz was their using three mounts from the sidecase bolts. Just "eyeball engineering" looked a little wimpy in a tip-over. | ||

Blake, Those are sweet, what did those set you back? I could see those on the X1 for sure, gotta put some money into that one, I sold my XB a few weeks back. American Sportbike or did you find them in another place? | ||

They were expensive Dale, $6,000. But they came with the bike.  I bought the bike on ebay when I was working up in Rockaway, NJ during Spring & Summer 2001. Road it back to Jersey through Friday traffic from Queens, NY. Fun stuff. First time I ever lane split. | ||

Steve, the tank idea is in the very early planning stages. I'm trying to get the original dimensional specifications, but if that fails I'll move to the cardboard mock-up stage and try to eyeball it(visually, the biggest difference I could see is that the original aluminum tanks had the sides pulled in compared to the stock X1 tank covers to allow for clip-on clearance) It's a long term plan at this point, but that kind of fabrication work is beyond my capabilities and the price/feasability of multiple tanks would be something I'd have to discuss with my fabricator. It's a bit more difficult than machining some rear set brackets | ||

Blake, That is sweet, the first lane split is one to remember, the first time I was in California and a full dresser Harley came by me flat out, straight pipes, I was daydreaming a bit coming from the Grange riding Aprilia's on the Supermoto Track heading back to the airport for my flight to Vegas and it got me good. I jumped like a spider just landed on me, kinda funny after, but at the time I was twisted. Cool looking bike for sure bro. |
