any people racing the twins in the central florida area.

we are wanting to start up very soon. It would be nice to know a few local riders.

we would be on a buell.

ever race with AHDRA?
just my suggestion - go on the AHDRA forum and post there, youre sure to find some buells local to you there.
Hell, I know of a couple I met last year at Gainsville that were around that area.

good idea.

we have never drag raced the buell. yet!

i will do a few more pipe combos and dyno setup to see what we want. then from there it will be ready.

its already setup to road race. then for the strip all we do is strap the front switch out the shock for the strut and apply the bars. then upload the map for the strip and drag pipe. and its ready. about a hrs work to convert it.

one bike two flavors.

any help will be big help. its going to be a new world.

Gainesville is certainly the closest track. And is a premiere facility...I normally ran at Bradenton or St. Pete..with the occasional trip to G-Ville for a ProStar event.

Sunshine is a killer 1/8 mile...the bike pits suck...but the track is phenomenal.

I think you would be well received with a Buell there...but if you race there...pack a lunch...the guys (and gals) that normally race there are world class et racers with numerous national champoinship wins...if you can win at Sunshine...you truly are Da Man!

I made my first 5 second 1/8 mile pass there.

many cycle guys there on buells.

i also guess i'll need to pack a basket with different rear sprockets.

which is easier 1/8 or 1/4?

OK, here we go Mike. Since there is not much following as yet in BadWeb about dragracing...and I will assume you are not as yet an experienced racer.

Buells at the strip are not real common unless you go to a AHDRA or equivalent race...many people don't realize how rare Buells are at this point...we are still an exclusive club so to speak.

Here is my best advice...Don't go to learn at a RACE...go during test and tune...at a race, the pace is fast and furious...with pressure to get down the track and the next pair to come up...this gives little time to learn and establish a pattern. (more on that later).

Go to test n tune a couple of times (Gainseville is a good choice) and closely observe how it works...there is a pattern that must be followed from how the staging lanes work to how to actually make a pass.

Hang out in the pits, acquaint yourself with people, ask questions...be frank, tell them you are a noob interested in learning...lend a hand, that sort of stuff. It will go a long way.

The down n dirty...there will be a lot of people that will not respect your bike...at first..especially the pimple nose on the Gixxer...ignore the squids..never take advice from anyone that talks like well dude, I got nozzz. It will be very easy to tell racers from squids..and there will be squids...that will become your advantage later.

Easier for 1/8 or 1/4...they are the same as far as gearing goes...more on that later in the thread...on a slower bike (sorry, your bike will be slow compared to the japanese iron...it's a fact of life..this is drag racing...there are no corners to pass them in) the 1/8th mile would be best for RACING...the 1/4 mile just has higher trap speeds which will leave you a sitting duck for the faster bikes...more on that later...this is complicated and takes a lot to understand it. It also depends on what class you run...street et or pro et.

Now...we need details about your bike...what model is it?..a pic is worth a thousand words..will it use a street tire or slick? You mentioned bars...set-up is critical.

Dragracing is fun and fascinating and can provide a lot of personal satisfaction...it has been all to often said that anybody can drive a straight line for a 1/4 mile...there is much much more to it than that.

i'll go the g-ville and see hot it goes. we have two guys here who are squids that go all the time.

both on 600 gsxr's

my goal is to beat them both.

as for mods.

a few.

i'm at 100 hp and tq is 88 but very broad.
rev speed to redline on the dyno is at 7.2 seconds with a 10% load.

its a xb9 stepped up.

i have a very lot to learn.

i do have the full pingle bars and i have the air shift ordered.

in my profile there is a pic of the bike on stands.

tires are dot brigstones bt003 cause out road race bike runs them first. so it new take offs with aprox 20 laps on them.

we have tire warmers and ect.
all the stands.

fuel cooler.

we are drag noobs preparing to go up soon. but we may be dead last but we will look fast.

the bike is built.

drag bar setup advice we need first probable. fueling and engine stuff we have under control.

having a dyno helps as i can set it to simulate a 1/4 mile with load.

you can strap your bike on the dyno all day long and simulate a 1/4 pass....but it dont mean a dang thing.
Like said, having the right setup is crucial and that is not something that will show on a dyno.

good starting point for the bars is about 2" off of the ground.

since youre running a XB i'd try to talk to brad cronenburg if i were you. Dude is really good on his XB, knows what he is doing. Nice guy.

OK, yes, go to TNT as much as possible and play with different gearing and bar heights etc, find what works best for you.

when it comes to 1/4 vs 1/8 there is no 'easier', its the same thing just one is a bit longer.

Tire warmers wont be necessary, thats what a burnout is for.

as for beating your friends on 600s - in the 1/8 you def have a chance, our low end power rules big time.
But in the 1/4 you might not be as fortunate, depends on how fast they are.
Do you know what they run?


Get on the AHDRA site and ask a lot of quetions, if you can make a AHDRA race then please come and enter and talk to other racers, have them watch you (if possible), we're all super friendly.
I am always amazed by how awesome the racers are at the events, always willing to lend a hand.

have you mounted the wheelie bars yet if not your gonna run into a problem the pingle kit only works on the lightning models unless modified, also if i were you i would ditch the road race tire for a drag racing tire, i found that the buell race series pipe has the best power range for drag racing

With the 7" M/T Tire what tire pressure range recommendation's do any of the members have? My concern is if my 93 Horse S3 can pull a 7" tire.

8 to 9 pounds is fairly normal...the thing to do is start at 10...and on some clean concrete...do a dry hop...look at the pattern...repeat as needed...adjust pressure until the patch is even across.

A new slick needs one hard burnout to set the rubber...after that (with a Mickey) burn out until it hazes all the way around....a John Force burnout is not needed.

Get a good tire gage and check pressure before each pass...the tire will lose pressure thru the sidewall...

im with hatchet, i think a slick would be overkill on the bike, but thats just my opinion.
could easily just use a DOT tire like a metzler racetec or something and be a o k

Personally My "98" S3 which has not be opened internally and has only a Thunder Slide, Vance & Hines Exhaust, Prospect Hill Performance custom air cleaner, Dayton Twin Tech Two-Stage True Single Fire Ignition, Rear Shock Replacement Lowering Strut, Front Forks Strapped Down and Wheelie Bars with the stock OEM type rear tire. I get too much traction @ 16 PSI of rear tire pressure and a launch rev. @ 6000rpm.

i'm looking at september. before i get to the track. i have to finish the road race season first and get my schooling going.

yep i have to go back to school to get a new trade. i psychically cant do heavy equipment repair any longer.

i have printed out these spects as a guide and i am making up a paper tablet with notes. hopefully it makes it good and a bit faster finding my combo with these details.

It wont be easy i know getting correct,but it will be fun.

i have a little dyno work to do then test a few pipes we are making. from there its test time.

being in florida i have three tracks i can get too in the off season with good weather.

i have to get myself into school and get a few classes done then i can get back out to play.

should be september. then a few here and there days at test an tune to try to learn stuff.
hopefully i can do a season next year.

florida racing allows a longer riding season. almost 100% year around for the tracks and year around on the bikes on the street.
