Apparently the ten superpole qualifiers in Daytona Sportbike have been dyno tested to find out the current level. Interestingly enough there was a 10% difference between the best and the second best power-to-weight ratios. So someone has a pretty big advantage over the rest. Of course these reults are inconclusive, but still make for an interesting read. To illustrate the difference between the first and second rated bike: Normalized to a 400 lbs bike the first rated bike would have 150hp, while the second rated bike would have only 135hp. Quite some difference... I still think it's the Buell that has that 10% power-to-weight ratio advantage. If there's one bike that seem to pull harder on the straights it's the Buell. I just don't see any of the 600s having such a big advantage over the other 600s, and the Aprilia is not at the top (see second link). It's probably just a matter of time before the results leak to the public... Very interesting (and refreshing) comments. Note how the hate subsides when a respected insider tells it like it is. Thanks for the link. |

Some commentary by Ricky Corey, an AMA racer participating on the Aprilia forum...
quote:I don't think everyone here really understands the reality of this situation. Yes, the buell is a little too fast, but let me tell you a little something about the 600s. The factory 600s are making a ridiculous amount of horsepower. I am racing a 135 HP RSV 1000 and the factory 600s still pull me down the straights by a good amount. I weigh 135 lbs and my bike is about 20-25 lbs heavier than the 600s (that's equivalent to about a 5 HP weight disadvantage, yet I'm typically lighter than most the other riders on the grid). I used to race a R6 with 125 HP and the factory 600s would pull me on the straights like I was tied to a post. The guys really getting screwed here and always have been are the true privateers (not privateers who are "in" with the factories and get factory motors) that are somewhere around 15-25 HP down. The only reason I am running an Aprilia this year is because I am soooooooooooo tired of getting beat by slower riders on way way way faster bikes. My theory was that the RSV would be closer to the factory 600s on the straights, and I was right, but the problem is getting it to handle like the 600s. The twins should have their own class. I think this whole thing is completely f#%%ed up. I don't think the 1000s 1125s or anything else should be racing against the 600s, because they are way to different to compete against each other fairly. I think that DMG should enforce the HP/weight limit that was originally introduced. But they can't because the factories threaten to not race then because they won't have their 15-25 HP advantage. It's both DMG and the Japanese Manufacturers fault. Racing is not fair just like life is not fair and never will be, but DMG could make it better by making better decisions on a lot of things like telling the factories "tuff sh#t you have to have the same HP as everyone else on the grid"
"Thanks Corey for the info. Do you have any idea how the factory 600s are developing the extra power over the privateers, given the tight rules for the Sportbike class?"
quote:I've been trying to figure that out for the past 3 years. I think the factories are having parts made by their manufacturer with the same processes as stock, but with different tolerances, different materials, and also different porting in the heads. Also, they are using Magnetti Marrelli ECUs which help with a lot of different tunning parameters. I think the reason they allow aftermarket ECUs is because the factories just make kit ECUs in the stock case and there's no way to prove it. That's why DMG originally wanted to hand out ECUs to each bike/rider for each given race.(yet another thing they should have put their foot down on) You could build a complete Formula Extreme motor and overbore it and still not have as much power as the factories. I know people that ran GSXR 750s in the supersport class and were still getting pulled by the factory 600s. As a matter of fact I watched them get passed on the banking of daytona on speed vision with the 750s. It's not just one thing they are doing to get that much power, it's a combination of a lot of things that you and DMG just can't prove, and the privateer has no ability to achieve the same results.
And from Chip at KWS MotorSports (AMA Aprilia Team running in Daytona Sportbike)
quote:Simple facts here: The buell is not an overdog. It has yet to turn the fastest lap time of an event or the fastest top speed. What it does is accelerate off the corner really well.....and has one hell of a rider on it.

Blake, v good - word direct from those with their feet on the ground, competing in the class..... it's great to see the Buell & Aprilia being 'competitive' in this well-watched class - BIG fun to root for them!! |
