Does anyone recall the last time anything but a factory bike has won the Superbike class? G |

Dale Quarterley, 1993, Mid-Ohio. He was leasing Kawasaki ZX7R's from Muzzy. That was also the last full season that Roger Edmondson ran the AMA pro racing program. |

Thanks Dave. Wasn't Muzzy Kawasaki's US factory team? G |

Muzzy ran Kawasaki's official US team. But he also built bikes and leased bikes. Anyone that was leasing a bike was given a freshened engine at the beginning of each AMA event weekend. The used engine went back to Oregon with the Muzzy guys for a refresh. That was how Roger envisioned the program to work. There would be big teams, and smaller teams. Some teams would generate revenue by making things that other teams could afford. Dale got into the program in 1992 by intitially purchasing one of the Muzzy bikes for $25k after the Bimota Tesi program came apart after Daytona. In 1993, it was the full year program. I think the cost was $50k, and he could then buy that bike for $25k at the end of the season. Dale had a good relationship with Eraldo Ferracci. Eraldo also leased bikes, Ducati's. Was about $80k though for the Ducati. Scott Gray was leasing one at many races. So, was Dale's bike a "factory" bike? It was made from most of the same parts. Dale was a Michelin guy, and Muzzy was a Dunlop team. So, geometry and set up were different. The crew was small. I helped when I wasn't occupied racing 600 & 750 Supersport, practice, etc. He had regular help from "Daytona" Mike and Ron Barrick. Ron was a meticulous tuner for Dale, Randy Renfro, and even with Bubba Shoebert when they had the short run in 500cc MotoGP. Eventually, Ron was the AMA road race manager. Smart guy, but I believe that he was there to organize and implement some of the bad stuff that occured in AMA racing. Not his fault. He was just tasked with a job. Hard one at that. He's very much into motorcycle racing, and I think things really pained him a lot by the end of 2006. |
