Do you use a tire wear gauge? Where can I get one? I need to start keeping better records on bike setup and racing. One of the parameters on setup I thought I might try to keep is tire wear. Settle on a specific tire to stick with, record tire pressures after each session and measure tire wear (and laps?) periodically. It would make it easier to track the effect of suspension changes. This may also help me determine when it's time to start thinking about new tires (besides waiting for the front tire to start feeling loose). |

I don't. They don't last that long at all. Are you trying to save money or go faster? If you're going to save money, then I'd recommend staying with track days. If you're looking to go faster, throw more tires at it. A worn tire won't help you set up your suspension, other than setting it up for worn tires rather than new ones. If I'm looking to put down my fastest times, my rear tire is probably going to start going down hill in two sprint races, if not in the middle or the end of the second sprint race. Yeah, some races aren't as fast, so I don't worry about it so much. And some days, all the new tires in the world won't help me put down faster laps. Knowing the difference is the key. |

Not trying to save money. Just trying to learn. I still need to start keeping better track of my settings though. For now I want to learn suspension tuning. I have found that if I time it right I can put new tires on for race day and use the left over tread for three trackdays (I'm a new racer and not a fast guy). This pattern works for my home track as they will have a trackday weekend (2 days) and a race weekend (1 trackday, 1 race day) each month. I'm sure this situation will change as I get faster. |
